Majestic Pools & Landscaping Capital Country Pools
INTRODUCTION
I
t can be very tempting to look to overseas designers
for the latest trends and innovations, but we have
an abundance of local design talent — skilled
practitioners who design high-calibre landscapes and
swimming pools that meet the most exacting standards.
In Australia's Best Landscape & Pool Design we
look at the work of some of this country’s most highly
respected landscape and pool designers and builders
to demonstrate what can be achieved when you engage
the services of a professional. A new pool or landscape
is a significant investment. Get it right and it will enhance
your lifestyle, now and well into the future, and it will
boost the re-sale value of your property should you
choose to move on at some future stage.
There are many advantages to working with an
experienced, accomplished designer. They can show
you ways to maximise your outdoor space, which is
especially important for those with small, tricky or
awkwardly shaped blocks of land. A designer will know
about the best materials and finishes, what your lighting
and heating options are, where to place focal points and
water features, what work will need council approval, and
a great deal more.
Armed with the right design, the next step is to work
with a skilled pool builder or landscape contractor.
In many cases, companies will offer both design and
construction expertise; in others, the company may offer
pool and landscaping services. The important thing is to
choose a company with experience and a strong track
record to give form to your new design.
The projects featured in Australia's Best Landscape
& Pool Design represent a wide range of locations and
styles. As you browse through the following pages you
will find holiday-style harbourside havens, bushland-
inspired landscapes, character-filled urban gardens
incorporating recycled materials, family-friendly pools
with a tropical twist, formal pools of grand design,
and contemporary projects in which the pool and
landscaping have equal billing.
While the designs are diverse, each project amply
shows the results you can expect when you work with
an experienced practitioner: a pool and/or landscape
created to suit the specifics of your site and meet your
family’s highly individual lifestyle needs.

More than 100 plant species were used in this landscape, ranging from
cycads, agaves, china dolls, bromeliads and various succulents to buxus and lilly
pillies, which were used for low hedging. To reinforce the desired tropical look
and add to the layering effect, there is a mix of striking palms, including Canary
Island palms, Kentia palms and miniature date palms.
“We had to crane a lot of the trees into position as they were too heavy to
move by hand,” says David. “Just manoeuvring the large trees around took
a long time but the effort was worth it. By using these advanced trees and
supporting this by the intense layering of the plants, we have given the garden
a look of maturity and abundance.” While David is pleased with the planting »

throughout, he is especially fond of the avenue of palm trees in the private front garden.
Walking beneath these trees you are guided from the street to a reflection pond, which
adds an elegant formal touch.
When you stroll around the grounds of this impressive property it is like walking
through an established tropical garden, which is precisely what the discerning owners
wanted. It is a welcoming place made all the more inviting at night when the well-
considered lighting scheme comes into play.

A Sydney’s Rose Bay were after. Their preference was for a clean-
lined layout bordering on the formal, which they felt would best
suit the architecture of the house and the shape of the existing
swimming pool. The sound of water was important to them, as was
implementing a soothing colour scheme of deep greens and whites.
“I feel we really captured and presented a garden that is completely
in line with the owners’ brief,” says designer Matthew Leacy of Landart
Landscapes. “It has symmetry, a connection to the house and a formal
structure and layout that makes it functional and inviting. For me, the
central water feature, which has a visual link to the water feature that leads
down the side of the house, is the most exciting element of this design,”
he continues. “This draws you to venture down the side and maximises a
chunk of land that went completely unused before the renovation.” »

A for the family — this is the Australian dream. However, if you don’t
have a massive rear garden, achieving this can seem like a challenge.
“The homeowners wanted a swimming pool but had no idea
how — or if — it could be done. In particular, they had major concerns about
whether there was enough room for a pool, an entertaining area and a parking
space,” says Shawn Townsend of Ashtown Landscapes.
Reflecting the traditional architectural features of the Victorian-style
house, a formal design for the pool and landscape was chosen by Shawn. The
pool, which is bordered by a low-growing evergreen hedge in keeping with the
formal style, incorporates a water feature. Three classical-style brass water
spouts send water streaming into the pool to create a subtle focal point.

show garden gives the designer an opportunity to be the client
and give full reign to his or her creativity. In this instance, designer
Dean Herald of Rolling Stone Landscapes used the Melbourne
International Flower & Garden Show as an opportunity to create his
interpretation of the ideal resort-style landscape.
The centrepiece of Dean’s lavish layered design was a fully tiled 10m-long
wet-edge lap pool with stainless-steel underwater bar stools. The stools sidle
up to a pavilion which houses a swim-up bar with glass-door fridges, storage
space and a sink. A custom-made stainless-steel trough was installed in the
bench close to the edge of the pool forming a self-serve bar.
A larger pavilion was erected on the other side of the pool. The centrepiece
of this pavilion was a handcrafted “floating” 5m-long Corian countertop
suspended from the ceiling by two steel rods. At one end the bench could be
used as a dining table, at the other there was a cooking station.
Just a few steps down from the pavilion there was a sunken hardwood deck
positioned to take in a restful view of the pool and the massed plantings. »

The main external complex consists of a cabana, pool and tennis court and
is used for entertaining. The traditional style of the cabana, together with
the integration of the extensive paved entertaining areas, tennis court, pool,
formal poolside lawns and plantings, ensures the overall project is in keeping
with the stately home. This traditional approach extends to the formal
planting avenues of the entry path and driveway.
The sparkling water of the pool and its interior surface clad in Italian
glass tiles contrasts beautifully with the surrounding sandstone paving and
blends well with the porcelain tile used inside the cabana, not to mention the
dappled greens of the gardens and lawn.
Traditional garden plants suited to the growing conditions have been used
to develop a series of outdoor rooms, each with an individual feel, while the
formal lawn areas create a soft transition from the residence to the tennis

frame an eye-catching view was imperative, says Adelaide-
based landscape designer and horticulturist Paul Jackson.
In the rear garden, the overall design was to be modern with an emphasis on
layered arrangements and a wide variety of plants.
In this case, the clients were very particular in their plant choices and
admittedly, not all plants seemed at first to be suitable,” says Paul. “Luckily, with
the prevailing shelter and aspect, plants such as Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’,
a Japanese maple cultivar known for its coral pink young stems, are thriving in
the rear area.”
Other plants include Prunus cerasifera ‘Oakville Crimson Spire’, with its richly
coloured leaves, and Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’, whose leaves turn from dark
green to reddish-purple, for vertical screening around the pool. “Murrayas
and lilly pillies were employed as the obligatory tall, thin hedgerows, and my
favourite combo, Himalayan weeping bamboo teamed with wood iris, was also
integrated into the design of the back yard,” adds Paul.
The owners were keen to emphasise the use of natural materials to
introduce some contrast and warmth into the landscape. With this in mind, the
pavers are of sawn bluestone and horizontal-slat screens are of teak.
Of special note is the “floating deck” constructed using Moonta Bay jetty timber.
This deck was built to one side of the covered entertaining area that extends from
the back of the house and features a cosy lounge setting and planting on three
sides. A focal point of the garden is a Julian Cauchi Corten-steel sculpture.

Rescued from another site, where it was destined for destruction, the cherry tree
was carefully dug out, transported to the garden by truck and temporarily planted
on-site until it was ready to be lifted into its final position. Once placed in its centrally-
located circular garden bed, it was under-planted with trailing lasiandra.
The serpentine garden beds, which border the wall of the house and the front
fence, boast mixed plantings of Phormium ‘Black Magic’, Liriope ‘Joy Mist’ and Abelia
grandiflora ‘Nana’. In the bed in front of the house, the feature planting consists of two
weeping Acacia cognata ‘Mini Cog’ and three Lophomyrtus ‘Black Stallion’. In the bed

Another focal point of the garden is a built-in bench seat set against the side fence.

Melbourne home have a natural look that is timeless. This is due to a
design that makes the garden look as if it naturally occurred on site,
which is always the best way to create a look that never dates.
While the owners had a small list of vital requirements (a vegie garden, a
functional driveway, and improved access to the front door), they were happy
to leave the rest to designer Doug Lord from Yellowstone Landscaping.
Doug’s design has an open, back-to-nature feel that fully complements
the architectural style of the house and uses the site’s natural contours and
considerable slope to best effect. To tame this slope, several retaining walls
were needed in both entry and rear gardens. The majority were constructed of
Coldstream rock, sourced locally. The rich colour of the rock blends well with the
house and planting scheme, and adds to the natural charm of the garden.
The plants were all selected for their appearance and ability to thrive in
the various microclimates around the property. The homeowners had a few
favourite plants they wanted to include, and to this list Doug added a variety of
Australian natives plus exotics such as birches, cycads and gardenias.

here is an aura of elegance surrounding this sleek new pool and its classic-modern landscaped
surrounds. Designed by Frank Gill and Associates and built by KMD — The Outdoor
Construction Company, the modern streamlined pool is the sparkling jewel in the crown of this
beautifully designed and expertly built outdoor retreat.
Of contemporary design, the lap pool serves a dual purpose. It can be used for exercise or it can assume
the role of an over-sized water feature, the view of which can be savoured from the outdoor dining and
lounge areas, and from inside the home.
The interior of the pool is clad in light-green Bisazza glass tiles, which shimmer during the day and
seem to take on extra lustre at night when the pool lighting is switched on. The design of the pool also
incorporates an underwater bench and steps that lead to a shallow spot where children can wade or
adults can sit and relax.
The soothing green of the pool’s interior complements the large expanse of lawn and the planting,
which has a largely traditional look with just a twist of the tropics.
While the pool is the centrepiece of the design, the stunning stonework and landscaping, all carried
out by KMD, are standout elements. For the retaining walls and pillars, KMD used lightly banded Sydney
sandstone, which adds warmth and natural texture throughout.
The stairs were created from Mintaro slate, the sweeping driveway and wide entrance path from
Mintaro cobblestone, and Verde granite was used in the creation of the tiered water feature. An
abstract metal sculpture sits on its top level. Custom-made metalwork on the wall behind the pool
adds another decorative element and even includes a picture window.
A commitment to quality extends to the state-of-the-art pool equipment. This includes a Zodiac
Caretaker in-floor cleaning system, a Caretaker leaf trapper, an EnviroSwim chemical-free water
purification system, a Zodiac fibreglass sand filter, Flo Pro pumps and a Virion gas heater. Surrounding
the pool is clean-lined frameless glass fencing which adds to the contemporary appearance and makes
the pool area look as open and airy as possible. The end result is a pool that looks good, is a joy to use and
virtually takes care of itself.

contemporary infinity-edge pool looks as if it is peacefully
floating amid the clouds. Flanked by timber decking and mere
steps away from a stunning outdoor dining and kitchen area, the
pool forms the centrepiece of a space that is nothing short of luxurious.
Having travelled the globe, staying at many exclusive hotels and resorts
from which they drew inspiration, the owners knew they wanted a sleek,
modern design with strong geometric lines. They also knew that being able
to both relax and entertain was important, so Alex Pritchard and Rob Galvin
from The Galvin Group set about designing a world-class outdoor living and
entertaining zone.
The fully automated pool, which has a swim-out ledge, is clad in white
mosaic tiles and features multi-coloured LED pool lights. The coping is of
Western Grey granite, which is the same stone used for the paving. Adjacent
to the pool is a large cantilevered deck that juts out towards the city lights.
Under the deck, which was built of ebony-stained Pacific teak, the pool
equipment room is hidden from view.
A short stroll from the pool is a steam room, massage room and change
room facilities, emulating the opulence of a five-star hotel. The outdoor
kitchen is equally sumptuous. It incorporates bar fridges, an oven, a built-in
barbecue and wok burner, an ice maker and a dishwasher. The benchtops to be built 5m above natural ground level, the pool needed to be engineered

his dazzling backyard swimming pool, designed and built by
Majestic Pools & Landscapes, flawlessly ties in with the design of
the home and landscape, which is precisely what people expect
from their pools today. A pool is no longer just a place to swim —
it’s a feature of the home.
Using the existing greenery as a backdrop, the new pool fits perfectly into
its surrounds, putting every centimetre of space to good use and ensuring
an easy flow to and from the house. The result is a private outdoor sanctuary
with a lush tropical feel. In fact, you could say it is the owner’s little piece of
paradise.
An essential part of the design is the glass fencing that separates the pool
from the house. The pool is kept safe from curious youngsters and pets
but the glass ensures the area doesn’t feel cut off from the home and the
covered outdoor entertaining space. It also has the advantage of making the
pool visible from the home’s windows so it can be enjoyed as a design feature
even when not in use.
The pool itself has two standout features that set it apart. One is the pitched-
roof pergola that seems to hover over the water. You can sit on the timber-
decked floor and dip your toes in the refreshing water, or you can relax in an
outdoor lounge chair and watch others as they enjoy the the pool.
The other is the water feature. Positioned near the pergola in a shallow
corner of the pool, the water feature is comprised of internally lit pillars; each
is constructed using alternating layers of stone and glass. The water gently
streams down the pillars, the sheen of the flow intensified by the lighting.

The pool works its way around the edges of the house in an

between the pool steps and the house and features a glass window in the wall
that faces the lap section of the pool. This helps to make the pool and spa feel
connected and read as a co-ordinated design element.

incorporates something for everyone and every occasion. There
is a spa, separate lagoon-like mini pools, an elevated sun deck and
a grand water feature. There’s even a swim-up poolside bar.
Blessed with ample space, Riviera Pools was able to create something
opulent that meets the owners’ every entertaining need and works
harmoniously with the stately country residence. There are no harsh angular
lines here. Each level of the tiered pool features sweeping curves that seem
to wrap around the house and beckon you on.
This pool has so many standout features it is hard to know where to
start, but a good place is the underwater stainless-steel stools that face the
outdoor bar. Or how about the separate shallow areas where children can
safely swim while their parents watch from higher tiers. Then there’s the
circular spa and the curved timber sun deck, both elevated to provide views
of the countryside.
For the stairs, paving, coping and stepping stones, sandstone was the
material of choice. This complements the stacked-stone feature wall, the
timber decking and the perimeter planting. The landscaping was integral to
the success of this project, helping to integrate the pool area with the lower
part of the property.
Easy maintenance was a consideration, so the fully tiled pool is equipped
with PCC 2000 in-floor cleaning, a Jandy AquaLink automation system,
Pentair variable speed pumps, and an electric heat pump. The pool, which
was designed by Riviera Pools in collaboration with Industrial Revolutions,
and built in conjunction with Poolform Constructions, is the perfect fit with
the home and the family’s lifestyle needs. What more could you ask for?

f you’re an aficionado of classical design and you like to do things on a
grand scale, this impressive swimming pool will be a source of inspiration
— and envy. Conjuring up images of the opulent villas and bath houses
for which the Roman Empire was famed, everything about this pool
exudes elegance, from the classical columns of the poolside pergola to the
feature urn employed as a focal point at one end of the pool.
When you look out from the rear of the house, the ornate poolside
pergola catches the eye and entices you to stroll to the pool zone at the far
end of the garden and sample one of the luxurious built-in daybeds. From the
cushioned comfort of these daybeds you can survey the formal landscape
and the generously proportioned pool that is its centrepiece. In fact, the
entire pool area, thanks to its well-balanced design, grand scale and exquisite
detailing, resonates with a feeling of grandeur.
The interior of the pool is fully tiled in pale pink. This has a subtle, softening
effect on the colour of the water and the overall ambience. The main entry
into the pool is via a wide internal step which leads to a second, wider step
and an expansive leisure ledge which continues down the pergola side of the
pool. Entry can also be gained via a smaller pool step positioned between the
central columns of the pergola.
Although the design takes you back to ancient times due to its classical
styling, the pool is packed with 21st-century technology. A PCC 2000 in-floor
cleaning system is programmed for every contour while an automatic pH
and liquid chlorination system and large sand filter take care of the nitty gritty
maintenance chores. A large Viron gas heater prolongs the swimming season
in the cooler months — not unlike a heated Roman bath house.

t’s what many of us crave: a high-set home with a panoramic water view.
And if there is a luxury swimming pool perched in just the right spot to
commandeer that view, so much the better.
The owners of this Sydney property had just completed a modern new
home designed to make the most of the great aspect and spectacular harbour vista.
The pool needed to match that by having the perfect orientation. It also needed to
complement the house and view, thereby realising the property’s full potential.
A challenging, steeply sloping site like this one often presents some of the
best opportunities to deliver a unique result, which is what FreeStyle Pools has
done. The negative-edge pool makes excellent use of what was a previously
unusable corner of the property and has become an integral part of the
adjacent outdoor entertaining area.
At the far end of the new pool is a small spillover that leads to a spa and
wading ledge, all fully tiled in vibrant blue. These elements were positioned to
maximise the serene harbour outlook yet remain close to the undercover patio
to socialise with friends and family.
The pool surrounds are of light-coloured porcelain tile while the interior
surfaces of the pool and spa were tiled in glass mosaics, the hue carefully
chosen to blend with the colour of the water in the harbour beyond. This
colour matching also helps to ensure the negative-edge design gives
the impression of a seamless transition from the pool to the borrowed
landscape of the harbour.

Pools also chose this shell for its appealing finish, durable construction and in-built
features, which include a spa and a swim-out area with underwater ledges which
can be used by children for paddling or by adults for resting.
A neutral colour was chosen for the paving around the pool and entertaining
area to blend with the flooring inside the home and create a seamless indoor-
outdoor look. Extra-wide paving surrounds the pool, bordered by raised sandstone
planter boxes and resulting in an open and functional outdoor space. Glass fencing
forms the border between house and pool, leading seamlessly into the alfresco
entertainment space for luxurious outdoor living.
For these busy professionals, low maintenance and ongoing efficiency were
priorities. With this in mind, the builders fitted the pool with a filtration system
comprised of a Viron CL400 cartridge filter and a P300 pump, an Astral VX series
salt chlorinator, and a Vantage pool cleaning circulation system, which is said to
make the pool self-cleaning. A Viron 250mj gas heater was installed to keep the
water at a comfortable temperature throughout the chillier months and a Daisy
pool blanket and roller were added to the list of must-have elements to keep the
warmth in and leaf litter and debris out.
