Ethical Analysis of UDAAN scheme for girl students

1. Introduction - UDAAN: A program to give wings to girl students

Every year, more than 1 crore students in India take the class 10th and 12th exams offered by the
state boards, ICSE, and CBSE. More than 65% of these students attend schools where the
primary language is not English. These students frequently encounter language problems when
enrolling in higher education institutions where English is the primary language of instruction.
For these students, the problem is exacerbated by the absence of textbooks and other
instructional materials in their mother tongues. Additionally, the lack of instruction in the mother
tongue has a big financial impact.

About the scheme

Udaan is a project launched by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) under the
guidance of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It is a
platform that empowers female students, supports their aspirations of enrolling in top
engineering universities, and prepares them to play a significant part in the future progress and
development of the nation. By this scheme, students are given accessible offline and online
resources through virtual weekend contact sessions and study guides on pre-loaded tablets while
enrolled in Class XI and Class XII to help them prepare for entrance exams to the nation's top
engineering schools. They provide equity among the students by bridging the gap between
school education & engineering entrance examination. For the weekly virtual contact lessons,
students are chosen based on merit and evaluated against the candidate’s chosen city.

The chosen students will access an online portal with three topic streams—Physics, Chemistry,
and Mathematics—organized according to Class XI and XII. This platform will have written,
text instruction, and video content. Concepts will be arranged by what is being learned in class
and the Class XI and XII syllabus.

2. Proposed Ethical Framework Analysis

The egalitarian philosophy of ethics, which advocates giving everyone an equal chance at
success, will be used to analyze the program. The plan primarily plays with the ideas of
development, fairness, and diversity. It strives to provide females who struggle financially fair
access to higher education. By empowering and educating girls, it seeks to advance the socially

underprivileged echelons of society. The program's selection process is based on fairness, with
girls who meet the qualifying requirements being offered the chance to participate in the
program. The program brings together females from diverse backgrounds, barring language
differences, to support their pursuit of higher education and entry into the traditionally male-
dominated engineering field.
