Structural Lay-Out Drawing
Structural System (Slab, Beam, Column)

Positioning and orientation of columns Positioning of beams

• Two axes marked one side with alphabets and the other with numbers.
• Columns are marked at the intersection of grids
• Beams are marked using two parallel lines
• Slabs are indicated either as one way or two way

EX-Problem
The statically determinate beam shown is subjected to the following
service loads:
- wD = 18 kN/m a b c d
- wL = 12 kN/m 1.5 m 4m 1m

The design demands are:

1. Max(+) bending moment at midspan “bc”
2. Max(-) bending moment in left cantilever at “b”
3. Max(-) bending moment in right cantilever at “c”
4. Max compressive axial force in supporting left column at “b”
5. Max compressive axial force in supporting right column at “c”
6. Max(+) shear at left support “b”
7. Max(+) bending moment in span “bc”
a. For each design demand, show the ultimate loads and calculate the
demand
b. Draw the extreme BMD of beam (envelopes for max(+) and max(-) bending
moment
demands)

Solution

wu1 = 1.4 × 18 + 1.6 × 12 = 44.4 kN/m

wu2 = 0.9 × 18 = 16.2 kN/m

− (16.2 × 1.5) × (2 + 1.5/2) 115.6

= 75.6 kN.m

Solution

wu1 = 1.4 × 18 + 1.6 × 12 = 44.4 kN/m
