Biomolecules are substances produced by cells and living organisms. They are one of the
most crucial for the survival of cells. Computer engineers are the ones who research
computer hardware/software, design, and develop them further. We could say that they are
creators of processors, memory devices, and so on. If we try to connect any biomolecule to
computer engineering, we will be able to invent unimaginable creations that can further
improve the lives of human beings.
As an illustration, we can take a look at designing proteins from scratch using computer
software. We can say that designing new molecules is complicated. Nevertheless, the
development in computer engineering and science made modifying biomolecules simpler. In
the beginning, the main focus of scientists was mimicking natural proteins but now they
actively use synthetic biomolecules. One example of such kind of software can be Rosetta,
which has 3D protein structure prediction models, taking natural proteins as an example
and making new ones from scratch. Such a discovery can tell us what can be done by
connecting computers and protein design. This means we can not only imitate what already
exists but create whole new proteins with different functions.
In conclusion, proteins play a very big role in our lives, especially in the pharmaceutical field
(for drug making). Computer engineering and science make it easier for scientists to develop
better proteins using biomolecules and enhance the efficiency of new drugs. Thus, we are
getting closer to a revolution in synthetic biology.
