musical theatres which is Peking Opera of China. We
will discuss also its music and instruments.

Analysis

Peking Opera

 Is also known as Beijing Opera and developed


later in the eighteenth century.
 This is a union of music, songs, dance, art and
various gymnastic stunts. It also includes
representations of character, mood, or actions
through gestures and actions rather than
words.

Features of Peking Opera


 Civilian-which is more of the vocal music
 Military-which has all the gymnastic stunts.

Fundamental Elements of Peking Opera


 Chang-vocal music
 Nian-dialogue
 Zuo-acting
 Da-martial arts

 Zuo- refers to the body m ovements of


dancing and acting
 Da- refers to the stunts p erformed in a martial
art type.
 Red Face in the protagonist- means bravery.
 Yellow or white face-means deceitful
antagonist.

Four types of roles in Peking Opera

1. Sheng
2. Dan
3. Jing
4. Chou

Music of Peking Opera

Xipi- is used in conveying intense emotions

Erhuang- conveys mystery and melancholy

The tune produced by the instruments can classified


into three

1. Rhythmic pattern is produced the percussion


instruments
2. Qupai is instrumental fixed-tune melodies.
3. Aria is a particular vocal style in which lyrics are
less important than melody.
