I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of a 60 minutes discussion, the grade 8-GOMBURZA students with 75% performance level will be able to:
a. Identify and add the coefficients of like terms and add them to find the final expression of the given problems;
b. Construct a mathematical equation using manipulatives; and
c. Solve real-life problems involving algebraic expressions.
B. Review
The teacher will ask the students about the previous lesson that was discussed
C. Motivation
Games (SUB ME IN)
The teacher will present the PowerPoint Presentation of the activity “SUB ME IN”)
D. Discussion
The students will present their activity and show to the class how they arrive in their answers.
1. What do you think is our lesson today? (The students will raise their hands)
2. The teacher will ask what is what is addition of algebraic expressions. (Addition of algebraic expressions is
the process of collecting like terms and adding them).
The teacher will present the methods to solve an addition of Algebraic Expressions:
(Students can perform the addition pf algebraic expressions using two methods.)
METHODS TO FIND THE ADDITION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
1. Horizontal Method
2. Column Method
The teacher will ask the students what are the differences between Horizontal method and column
method. (The Horizontal method is the simplest way to find the addition of algebraic expressions while
Column method is also called a Vertical Method. The addition of algebraic expressions can be
estimated using the vertical method by writing the expressions is separate rows.
4a + 3b -7c
E. Overview
Students will use to practice adding algebraic expressions.
F. Valuing (Connecting Algebraic expressions in real-life situation)
The teacher will give the students an activity with regards to a real- life situation. ( Since you already understand
the process in adding algebraic expressions let’s have an activity. We will measure how far and deep is your
understanding with our discussions awhile ago.) The teacher will present a short video clip and a PowerPoint
Presentation of real- life world problems involving addition of Algebraic Expressions.
IV. ASSESSEMENT
Assessment Task 1: Solving skills
You may use Algebra
1. 13x + 7y – 8x + 20y
tiles in solving the
2. 22x3 – 19 + 14x 4 - 9x3 + 20
following algebraic
3. X2 + 7 + 6x + (x3 – 3)
expressions.
4. 10x2 + 14 + 9x2 + 3 – 8x2 + 6
5. 2a7 + 5b7 + 19a7b7
Assessment task 2: Problem- solving
1. Leah can clean the store in five hours. If Angelo helps, it takes them four hours. Without help, how many hours
would it take Angelo to complete this Job.
2. The distance from Emma’s house to her school is (3x3 + 2x2 y + 2) units and the distance from her school to park
is (-2x3 + 5xy – 7), then find the distance from her house the park.
V. ASSIGNMENT
Instructions: Use algebra tiles to build each equation. Draw the algebra tiles that represent each part of the
equation.
