Berton Hasebe originally drew Review for Patrick

Li and his team at T: The New York Times Style
Magazine. In 2018, new editor in chief Hanya
Yanigahara pushed for a complete reimagining of
the magazine. What had primarily been an image-
driven publication evolved into a text-focused one,
with the squarish, commanding Review doing much
of the heavy lifting at all sizes.

Review Thin Berton Hasebe (born 1982) moved from Hawaii to

Review Thin Italic study and work in Los Angeles, obtaining a BFA from
Review Light Otis College of Art and Design in 2005. In 2007 he
Review Light Italic moved to the Netherlands to study type design through
Review Regular the Type and Media masters course at the Royal
Review Regular Italic Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Berton has re-
Review Medium sided in New York since 2008, and was a staff designer
Review Medium Italic with Commercial Type from 2008 to 2013, when he left
Review Bold to start his own studio.
Review Bold Italic Berton’s typefaces have been awarded by the New
Review Heavy York and Tokyo Type Directors Club, the ATypI, and the
Review Heavy Italic Brno Biennial. In 2012 he was awarded Print Magazine’s
Review Black 20 Under 30 Award. Berton has previously taught at
Review Black Italic Parsons School of Design, the Type@Cooper Extended
Program at The Cooper Union, and the University of the
Arts in Philadelphia.
