community effort at Spring Creek Towers. The walk will be the
first annual event of its kind, and he hopes will continue to
support students throughout the years.
Tommy and Rachelle, parents of running participants
Jordan, 24, and Naomi, 14, have always been impressed by the
stellar judo programming developed by Coach Legros, so much
so they consider it to be an extension of their family. So, when
they learned about the race, and its work to help those in need,
they joined their children in assisting in this effort.
“It’s something we support because it’s all about getting
people to be active and to support the idea of just community.
I mean, this community has been nothing but sweet and giving
back to it is nice,” Tommy said.
Nodding in agreement, Rachelle also adds that since the
COVID-19 pandemic, her family has learned to come to
appreciate outdoor and group events more than ever.
“Judo is such a family, which makes everything come from
the heart. It’s with joy that we can give back to the community
and we are thankful to be included,” Rachelle said.
Judo literally means the gentle way; it is a modern form of
Japanese martial arts with the main objective to turn an
opponent’s force against them utilizing it to the judoka’s
advantage. Legros takes this form of martial arts and uses it to

Students in SCT Honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month

BY AMANDA MOSES

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a nationwide

campaign that aims to raise awareness about the impact of breast
cancer. Each of the local schools in the Spring Creek Towers’ (SCT)
community made strides to combat breast cancer by hosting walks
and other activities to showcase the severity of the disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
there is no cure and approximately 264,000 diagnosed cases of
breast cancer in women and 2,400 in men. Among those, some
42,000 women and 500 men perish from this disease.
Local educational facilities such as Abe Stark Primary School (PS)
346, Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII, and Gateway
Intermediate School (IS) 364 each scheduled their own walks around
the SCT community donning pink shirts, holding up signs and
banners, and chanted for an end to breast cancer.
Maria F., a mother of an 11-year-old FDA VIII student, applauded
the school’s efforts to both educate the middle schoolers on the issue
of breast cancer as well as promote advocacy among the classes.
“I always want to encourage my son to do activities like this
because we have had family die from cancer, and while it was a
differed type of cancer, breast cancer awareness spotlights the entire
disease. I want him to know that we can all fight, fight for the lives
of cancer survivors and the ones who died,” Maria said.
Students participating in the walks shared that they’ve learned
how crucial preventive care is and are working to inform family and
friends about yearly screenings, such as mammograms.
“It’s important for me to participate in this walk because there are
people who are in the hospital now who need a voice, and I want to
show them that we support them,” FDA VIII student Caitlyn, 12,
said.
Eleven-year-old Victoria echoed this sentiment, sharing that FDA
VIII’s walk was particularly significant to her since her grandmother
is currently undergoing medical treatment for breast cancer.
“Well, it is important to me to participate in this walk because my
grandmother has breast cancer, and she is dealing with it. I know a lot of
people are suffering from it, and I understand that it’s hard for them,”
Victoria said.

IS 364 Falcons Join ‘I Will Graduate Day’ Celebration at Barclays Center

BY AMANDA MOSES

On October 24th, Gateway Intermediate

School (IS) 364 joined over 11,000
students at the Barclays Center for the
largest education celebration, “I Will
Graduate Day (IWG).” Some 179 schools
across the city attended the annual event
from 11am to 5pm.
IWG is a New York City-based nonprofit
organization with a goal to support
students in public schools combating low
graduation and attendance rates. Since
2008, this event has engaged students
through dance and motivational speeches
from political leaders such as Chancellor
David Banks, Public Advocate Jumaane
Williams, Council Members Adrienne
Adams, Rita Joseph, and Laurie Combo,
as well as famed musicians and celebrities
to underscore educational excellence.
“Graduation is a momentous occasion,
marking the incredible culmination of a
student’s formal studies. More than that, it
represents the determination that I know
all of our students have and partnering
with organizations like I WILL GRADUATE helps to ensure that every
child has what they need to graduate. Graduation is the first step on
a lifelong adventure of learning, and it is incumbent on the entire
community to stand with our young people taking this pledge today,”
New York City School Chancellor David Banks said.
Everyone in attendance reiterated the same message: the key to
success and a brighter future was through education and staying in
school to achieve their goals. During the event, students were treated
to live performances by their peers as well as celebrities, music, and
additional fun.
“This was the biggest I WILL GRADUATE DAY yet, and the fact that
it grows every year is a testament to the power of this work. New York
City public school students and families often face immense
challenges and academic success can seem out of reach. But we are
here to show them that the future is in their hands and give them the
support they need to graduate high school and excel long into
adulthood. Today’s event was big, but it was just one piece of the work
we do every day for New York City youth,” Tonya Lewis Taylor, co-
founder and executive director of IWG, said.
Members of IS 364 and thousands of other students left the event
knowing that there is an entire community rooting for their success.
Additionally, it was cemented that there are those who will be there to
uplift and empower them within the educational system and through
various organizations.
