There are 5 pages posted up around the classroom, each page has the name of a dimension of
health. Move around the class and list a benefit of physical activity on each page relative to the
dimension of health. As a class share everyone’s responses and create a class list of the benefits of
regular physical activity of each dimension of health.

To develop knowledge and understanding of inclusivity and factors that affect participation.
Success Criteria:
Can define and explain inclusivity and factors that impact participation in physical activity.

Inclusivity
Looks like Feels like Sounds like

11
Aim: To investigate issues with inclusivity in games and sports.
How can we modify rules and scoring systems to increase fair play, safety and inclusive
participation?
Complete the following activities and Observations Feelings
record your observations.

1. Game 1: People with blue eyes have

to sit out

2. Game 2: If you weren’t born in

Darwin you have to sit out.

3. Game 3: If people with brown eyes

score they get 5 points, people with
blue eyes get 1 point.
Were the games inclusive? Discuss.

How did the rules changes impact inclusivity? Discuss.

What modifications could you make to increase inclusivity?

Week 4
Lab 1 – Respiratory Rate

12
Learning Intention:
To develop knowledge and understanding of acute and chronic impacts of physical activity with a
focus on respiratory rate.
Success Criteria:
Can define and explain what acute and chronic means and the acute and chronic impacts of physical
activity on the respiratory system.

Acute and chronic effects of physical activity

Before we can investigate the effects of exercise on the respiratory system we need to first
learn what ‘acute’ and ‘chronic’ mean when discussing physical activity.

Draw a line to match condition to the correct word:

 Immediately following physical activity

Acute  Long term

 Long lasting
 Short term
Chronic
 Develops quickly
 Takes time to develop
 Sudden
 Following repeated amounts of physical activity

Benefits of physical activity –

Respiratory Rate Lab
Aim: To investigate the acute and chronic impacts physical activity has on the
respiratory system.
Complete the following activities with a partner and record your respiratory rate.

13
Record your respiratory rate after participating in the Respiratory
activity for 2 minutes. After the activity is completed Rate (RR)
your partner counts the number of breaths you take for Recorded as Observations
10 seconds and then times it by 6. This will give you the breaths per
number of breaths you take per minute (RR). minute (RR)

1. Lay still and silent on the floor with your

eyes closed
2. Walking

3. Star jumps

4. Sit ups

Which activity had the lowest respiratory rate? Why? Discuss.

Which activity had the highest respiratory rate? Why? Discuss.

What were the acute impacts of the activity with the highest respiratory rate?

If you were to frequently participate in activities which increase your respiratory

rate what positive chronic effects and benefits would this have on your health?

Week 5 Lab 2 – Heart Rate

Learning Intention:
To develop knowledge and understanding of acute and chronic impacts of physical activity with a
focus on the cardiovascular system.
Success Criteria:
Can define and explain what acute and chronic means and the acute and chronic impacts of physical
activity in the cardiorespiratory system. .
Aim: To investigate the acute and chronic impacts physical activity has heart rate.

14
Complete the following activities and record your heart rate.
Record your heart rate after participating in the activity for 2 Heart Rate
minutes. As soon as the activity is completed locate your pulse Recorded as Observations
and count the number of beats for 10 seconds and then times it beats per
by 6. This will give you the number of beats per minute (bpm). minute (bpm)

1. Lay still and silent on the floor with your eyes

Resting Heart Rate

2. Walking up and down the stairs

3. Squats

4. Burpees
Which activity had the lowest hear rate? Why?

Which activity had the highest heart rate? Why?

What were the acute impacts of the activity with the highest heart rate?

If you were to frequently participate in activities which increase your heart rate what
positive chronic effects and benefits would this have on your health?

Week 7
Lab 3 – Exercise and Mood
Learning Intention:
To develop knowledge and understanding of acute and chronic impacts of physical activity with a
focus on exercise and mood.

Success Criteria:

15
Can define and explain what acute and chronic means and the acute and chronic impacts of physical
activity on mood.

Exercise is a great way to lift mood and relieve some symptoms of depression.
Research suggests that regular exercise may increase the level of brain serotonin. Exercise
can also increase the level of endorphins in the brain which have ‘mood-lifting’ properties.

Regular exercise can:

• Increasing energy levels
• Improving sleep
• Distracting from worries
• Providing social support and reducing loneliness if exercise is done with other
people
• Increasing a sense of control and self-esteem

Define the following:

 Duration: ___________________________________________________

 Intensity: ___________________________________________________

Exercise is a great way to boost your mood. Let’s see what exercise works best for you.
Duration Intensity Describe your
