UNIT 1: Instructional Materials in Teaching and Learning

Lesson 1: Preparation and Evaluation of Instructional Materials

I. Learning Compass
At the end of the unit, the students must have:
a. determined the appropriateness of instructional materials used;
b. designed an instructional material based on their area of specialization,
and;
c. evaluated the effectiveness of the instructional materials used in the
classroom.

II. Overview
Instructional materials are one of the most important things that need to be
prepared by the teachers before the actual teaching practice. These are any types of
materials that are being used and utilized by both teachers and students in the process
of teaching and learning. Instructional materials are believed to aid, improve, and support
the delivery of instruction to make learning more meaningful and more lasting. This
module includes the purpose and uses of instructional materials in making the teaching
and learning process more effective as well as the preparation and evaluation of the said
instructional materials used in the classroom. The activities will allow the pre-service
teachers in selecting, developing, and evaluating instructional materials to facilitate
learning.

C. Abstraction

Printed materials and multi-media materials used in the classrooms or in

the libraries can be utilized as instructional materials. In making and selecting
the instructional materials, there are important things or guidelines that to be
taken into consideration such as the following: it should be age appropriate for
the students and most importantly, it should be at par with their ability level
since these materials are made and presented intended for them.

The resources that the teachers use to deliver instruction are termed as
instructional materials. It is believed that student success is increased and
student learning is supported when instructional materials are being utilized.
Ideally, the lesson or content and also the teacher concerned together with the
students assigned should be assessed and examined carefully so that the
instructional materials will be tailored to these aspects accordingly.

There are a lot of good reasons as to why instructional materials are

important for the reasons that they support the learning content, recognize
students to take part in the application of concepts and bring forth an
opportunity for evaluation. Instructional materials are established to further
learner understanding.

Important things to consider in making and selecting the instructional materials:

Dimension The size of the instructional materials especially the ones

mounted on the board should not be too big or too
wide so that
all your IM’s can be seen by your students. For the font size of
your text in cartolina or manila paper, it should be big enough
to be seen by the students situated at the back of the classroom.

Color Instructional materials should be colourful as much as possible

because students get attracted to bright and dark
colors most
especially the visual learners. It is also important to consider
the choice of colors in order to facilitate understanding.

Durability Whatever materials are to be used, the goal is to be able to make

these materials last long so that they can still be
taken
advantage of in the future.

Economy The material should be worth its cost. The cheaper, the better.
Make use of whatever materials or resources one
has at his or
her home.

Easy to handle Your instructional materials should be light and easy to

operate. It should also be easy to put up and
eventually store
for future use.

Appropriateness When you make instructional materials, they should be

timely and up to date. It has to be relevant to the
particular lesson
most especially to the pressing needs, problems, and
experiences of the people and the society.
Novelty The material should stir up the curiosity as well as the sense of
discovery among the students by creating an
element of
newness.

D. Application
Directions: Design a well-planned instructional material for effective teaching
and learning process. It can either be a hand-out in MS Word format or a
PowerPoint Presentation.

Lesson 2: Preparation of Bulletin Boards
I. Learning Compass
At the end of the unit, the students must have:
a. given the uses of bulletin boards as a classroom material;
b. designed a bulletin board, and;
c. evaluated the effectiveness of the bulletin board display.

II. Overview

One of the important components of classrooms is the bulletin board. By having a

bulletin board, new materials can be introduced and the works and outputs of the
students can be displayed. To create bulletin boards that can both engage and can
stimulate the minds of the students is one of the important things that is encouraged from
the educators. When teachers post materials, students are only able to realize their
importance when these are associated with bulletin boards that are interactive. Bulletin
boards are dependent to the concepts that are currently being covered in class hence,
these should be frequently changed. This module includes the purpose and uses of
bulletin boards in the process of teaching and learning and the benefits of using and
integrating bulletin boards in the classroom. The activities will allow the pre-service
teachers in selecting, developing, and evaluating bulletin boards to facilitate learning.

C. Abstraction

Bulletin boards have different purposes. They send forth different pieces of
information may it be calling or reminding teachers for meetings and
deadlines, announcements to students and parents, or it can also be an
avenue as to where students can see their best outputs in their subjects.

The identity of the class or school can be reflected through the

bulletin boards. Bulletin boards whether displayed inside or outside
the classroom exhibit the different things that are being valued, as
well as how the students will be able to exhibit and connect the
things they learned in their different subjects and most importantly
how these learnings can be applied in outside context.

The things being learned and the actions being done in the past are
also a few of the things that can be focused on in the bulletin boards
as these things unveil the different processes of learning together
with the desired products or outcomes. The different things that the
full-grown person learned also with what the students learned are
included most of the time.

Students, teachers, parents, and the wider community are just some
of the audiences of the bulletin boards. The students should be
considered to be involved in the crafting or designing of the bulletin
board.

The crafting or planning of the bulletin board can be done before,

during, or even after the learning experience.

Tips in Making/Designing Bulletin Boards:

• DO NOT include too much text.

• Decide on what specific learning you want to make visible to your
audience. • Evaluate the bulletin board on others from afar to make
sure that the texts are readable and the pictures can be seen. •
The teacher has the discretion as to where he/she wants to
display the bulletin board either inside or outside the classroom.
D. Application
Directions: Based on your major/area of specialization, make a bulletin
board layout. Be creative in presenting your output.
