Lesson Topic: Introduction to Animal Farm (An Allegory for the Russian Revolution)

Date: October 19th-20th

appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revisiting, editing, rewriting, or


trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific
purpose and audience.

1. Teaching Model(s):

a. Direct Instruction: Teacher will present the lesson including the objectives and information in
person to students by using an anticipation guide handout, a Russian Revolution breakout box,
and a Russian Revolution Quiz which are all paper handouts.

3. Objective(s):

a. By the end of the lesson, SWBAT (students will be able to) understand how to identify an
allegory within a text by using prior knowledge and evidence from multiple sources.

Instructional Procedures:

i. Students will enhance their understanding of a text by using prior knowledge to gain their

1. 7:00-7:03: Warm-Up Activity (Vocabulary)


2. 7:03-7:25: Students will complete the Animal Farm anticipation guide with their partners.
3. 7:25-7:38: Students will then be asked to complete an Allegory Kahoot which will gauge
them on their knowledge of allegory texts and ideas.
4. 7:38-8:15: Teacher will then begin explaining the directions for the Russian Revolution
breakout box. Students will work in their groups of four to complete the breakout box
activity.
5. 8:15-8:20: Students will start their Russian Revolution Quiz and answer questions
individually through Canvas.
6. 8:20-8:22: Teacher will instruct students to write down the definition of what an allegory
is and use the word in a sentence.

c. Closure: Students will be redirected to the front of the classroom where the teacher will ask
students to complete a survey and vote what Beowulf character tweet they enjoyed the most.

as a group with their team members.
3. What to do if the whole class finishes early or needs extra time:

-Needs Extra Time: Students will be allowed to complete the remainder of the Russian
Revolution Quiz as homework, on their own time. If students did not finish the quiz, the
teacher will give students 7 minutes at the beginning of next class period to complete the
assignment.

-Finishes early: Students will be asked to complete the Russian Revolution Quiz with
their groups and submit their answers online through Canvas, under the ‘Russian
Revolution” quiz assignment.

6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners

Learners:
Teachers will follow IEP & 504 and accommodate students in ELL, ELA, and learning
disabilities.

a. Teacher check-ins and/or comprehension checks during guided practice and independent
assignments (this will be done by teacher presenting the assignment)
b. Teacher will give hard copies/print copies of materials

c. Teacher reads assignment and/or test directions, questions, and choices aloud to the student/
students.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:

a. Formative: The Animal Farm anticipation guide and the Russian Revolution Breakout box are
both formative assessments. One will be worth 13 points while the other is worth 25 points.

b. Summative: Students will complete a Russian Revolution Webquest Form through Canvas
where it will test their knowledge of what they have learned about the history of Russia from the
activities on both 10/19-10/20.

8. Reflection:

a. After completing the lesson, I felt that the students did not have enough time to complete
the Russian Revolution breakout box assignment. I do believe that the Russian
Revolution Quiz is essential to utilize throughout the lesson though I was unable to get to
it. The quiz is important because it tests students on their understanding and the
knowledge that they gained from the Russian Revolution quiz. If there were more time
permitted, I believe that as a teacher, I would be able to gauge where students are before
going into the Animal Farm novel.
