1. Describe how risk management differs from one ship to other ship?
Depending on the past experience of the customer, pollution control or structural issues may be high on the
agenda of one while another may focus on crew experience or navigation Risk management priorities may
differ.

2. Enumerate the ship preparations for the vetting inspection.

 Make sure all concerned parties are made aware of the importance of an inspection.
 Consider logistical issues such as location, time etc.
 Senior staff MUST make regular walkabouts on board. Do not settle for circumstantial blindness

 Be prepared to deal with an inspector who might not be having a very good day!
 Have the professional courage and knowledge to challenge an inspector if he is making a mistake. It
is for your good as well as the inspector’s.
 Do not attempt to cover up things or make excuses for mistakes. It will not help.
 If you have a good, practical and experienced inspector, use the experience as a learning tool.

3. Explain the prime objective of the ship personnel during the vetting inspection.
 Do everything you can to have the inspector on board for as short a time as possible.

remarks or findings of the inspector are questionable?

2. What would you gain during the inspection?

Inspections are important as they allow you to listen to the concerns of inspectors and supervisors so I will
gain further understanding of jobs and tasks, identify existing and potential hazards, determine underlying
causes of hazards, recommend corrective action and more.

3. Most shipping companies are expressing their concern regarding the vetting inspection. Explain the
reason why shipping company wants to have a case-to-case basis of vetting inspection
