the chain of infection will not end as Omicron
variants continue to mutate in our
communities,” he told theSun yesterday.
Noor Hisham said his warning stems from
daily Covid-19 case projections, which show a
possible increase in infections this month and
in December due to the Omicron variant.
“Public health measures are strongly
encouraged, such as wearing face masks when
in crowded places, and narrow and closed
spaces. Also, wash your hands frequently with

(BN) decision to retain Datuk Seri
Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime
minister if the coalition wins the 15th
general election (GE15) is lauded as a
wise decision by the coalition’s
members and political analysts.

members about having Ismail Sabri

the election.
“It is our party (Umno) president’s
wish to have him continue as premier
if BN wins GE15 and forms the next
government. We have agreed that he
is the best one to hold that position,
judging from his successes in helping
Malaysians during hard times,
especially after the Covid-19
outbreak,” he told theSun.
Reezal is confident that Ismail
Sabri’s approach to managing the
country during the trying period will
propel Malaysia to greater heights,
with different measures and
strategies in place to assist the
working class.
“If you look at Budget 2023, which
was presented last month, the
subsidies have increased to RM80
billion, and its main theme was to
provide a cushion for the people and
help the country bounce back after
going through difficult times during
the pandemic.
“Through Budget 2023, financial
assistance has been increased and
allocated to those who need it. For
example, through Bantuan Keluarga
Malaysia, families having a
combined income of less than
RM2,500 and with five children or
more will receive RM2,500 per
household. e-Pemula, an e-wallet
credit programme, will also be
increased to RM200 next year, from
RM150.”
Reezal said Budget 2023 is based
on Ismail Sabri’s observation and
measures to ease the burden of
Malaysians and to ensure that people
can finally breathe a sigh of relief after
going through two difficult years.
He pointed out that Ismail Sabri’s
approach to the Budget was
balanced, and that economic growth
would continue to become the
government’s priority.
“The Budget also outlined some
assistance for small and medium
enterprises, which I believe is part of
the (caretaker) prime minister’s
strategy to stimulate the economy
and help micro businesses to flourish
post-pandemic. Distribution can
only be done if there is growth.”

Mental Health Centre
of Excellence lauded

PETALING JAYA: A 2015 Health
ministry report stated that one in
three Malaysians, or 29% of the
population, suffered from mental
health issues. The figures have
remained the same for now.
However, as a silver lining,
caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Ismail Sabri Yaakob has taken up
mental health as an issue of concern,
and plans to establish a National
Mental Health Centre of Excellence.
Mental health advocates have
lauded the move as he is the first
prime minister to put such issues at
the top of his agenda.
On Oct 7, the government
announced that the Health Ministry
was among the recipients of the
largest increase in allocations under
Budget 2023, amounting to RM36.1
billion, compared with RM32.4
billion this year.
When tabling the Budget in the
Dewan Rakyat, caretaker Finance
Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul
Tengku Abdul Aziz had said the
government would establish a
National Mental Health Centre of
Excellence to act as an integrated
driving force for all parties to ensure
the people’s mental well-being,
under MyMYNDA, with an allocation
of RM34 million.
Alliance for a Safe Community
chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said
the centre was very urgently needed
for stakeholders, to act as a national
coordination centre for prevention
and advocacy, capacity
development, resource sharing,
research monitoring, surveillance,
and implementation of mental health
programmes.
“Without good mental health, we
cannot have good physical health. We
have a caretaker prime minister who
understands this, so the centre offers
a lot of opportunities to raise
awareness, including providing
education to the community on the
subject,” Lee said.
He added that with the Covid-19
pandemic, Malaysia was badly
affected and many people lost their
jobs, businesses and incomes,
leading to mental health issues,
including depression.
“Some of them (could have) felt
that they were at the end of the road
and the idea of committing suicide
(may have) crossed their minds. If we
don’t address mental health issues,
we will face more problems in the
long run.”
Lee said thanks to Ismail Sabri and
his concern for the people, the issue
was raised at the Cabinet level,
adding that once the centre is
established, mental health advocacy
training and education to spread
awareness could be carried out.
“This centre can be a medium for
relevant NGOs, stakeholders and the
government to collaborate, share
results of scientific research, plan
activities to promote awareness on
the issue and much more. People
need to have mental health literacy.
This can help promote mental health
and mental illness prevention,” he

‘Verify political info from social media’

to fact-check information they obtain
from social media platforms, as most
almost always lack accuracy.

part of the medium for information to
be disseminated via platforms such
as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and
Instagram.
“You can share anything on social
media. However, when it comes to
trustworthiness of such information,
it is quite questionable, mainly
because there are no gatekeepers.
“Compared to (traditional) media,
there is a structure that controls the
flow of news, where editors are in
place to check the accuracy of the
information before it goes out.”
He said his research on voter
behaviour in previous elections
shows that social media can create
awareness among the public about
the current situation, latest news and
political scenario.
“Seventy-five percent of voters,
regardless of age, referred to social
media platforms to look for
information about any political
campaign. However, in terms of
influencing voters, they would still
need traditional media such as
newspapers and television to seek
truth in the news that they read
about,” Ismail said.
“Approximately 55% of voters still
rely on traditional media for more
accurate news about political
campaigns, while another 45% said
they prefer to get political news from
social media platforms.”
He added that fundamentally,
voting behaviour can be influenced
by four factors – candidate profile,
political party, manifesto and track
record of both candidate and
the party.
International Islamic University
Malaysia associate professor Dr
Shafizan Mohamed pointed out that
social media was not the ultimate
indicator of voter behaviour.
“Despite the importance of social
media in information dispersion,
Malaysian politics is still bound by
culture, race, history and religion that
contribute to voting behavior in our
country,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr Noor Nirwandy
Mat Noordin from the UiTM Centre
of Media and Warfare studies said
social media users should train
themselves to conduct fact-checks of
any information they get from social
media and not to be “played” by
emotional discourse on social media
platforms.
He said although social media
offers unlimited access to
information, most of the time, the
nature of social media is individual-
centric, meaning only certain
individuals get highlighted.
“We need to be aware that some
people on social media carry
negative objectives that try to gain
advantage and mileage credits by
putting up negative information
against political parties (they are
targeting).”
He advised young voters to be
aware of fake news and negative
propaganda, which are used to
influence the decisions of voters.
“Never get emotionally attached
to any political propaganda or
negativity fuelled by social media.
Young voters need to be aware that
most of the strategic campaigns,
particularly the negative ones, use
representative elements such as
colours, hashtags and symbols to
influence them,” he said.

Barisan women candidates eager

to make impact
ALOR STAR: The women candidates fielded by
Barisan Nasional (BN) in four parliamentary
constituencies in Kedah in the 15th general
election (GE15) are determined to prove their
mettle and wrest seats from the Opposition.
BN candidate for the Pendang
parliamentary seat Datuk Suraya Yaacob, who is
Kedah Umno information chief, said she wants
to be the voice of the people in the “rice bowl
state”, especially women.
The Sungai Tiang assemblywoman
expressed hope voters in Pendang would
accept having a woman as their MP.
“It is not easy for women to be fielded as
candidates. So, when BN gets the chance to field
women to contest in 30% of the 15
parliamentary seats in the state, voters should
give it serious thought. Look at who the
candidates are, not at the party they represent.
Look at their ability and persistent efforts.”
A former deputy minister in the Prime
Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr Mashitah
Ibrahim, who has been chosen for the Kuala
Kedah seat, said she was willing to take up the
challenge to ensure victory for BN.
“When I was informed that I will be fielded
in Kuala Kedah, I did a little homework and
drew up my own manifesto. I also went to meet
some of the electorates there and they were very
excited to have a woman leader, and to me, that
is an early sign of victory for BN,” she said.
Meanwhile, BN candidate for the Sungai
Petani parliamentary seat Datuk Shahanim
Mohamad Yusoff said more women should be
given the opportunity to be elected
representatives in Kedah.
BN candidate for the Sik parliamentary seat
Maizatulakmam Othman @ Ibrahim, who is Sik
Umno Wanita chief, said more women should
be given a chance to be elected representatives
as they understand the needs of women.
“I need to work hard to win the votes of my
electorates, 50% of whom are women. I have
been with Umno for 20 years. I am confident
party members will help me and BN will win.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Campaigning for the 15th
general election gained momentum as
activities entered its second day yesterday, with
candidates meeting voters at markets and
eateries.
Incumbent Bera MP Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri
Yaakob began his day by visiting Pasar Sehari
Kerayong, where he spoke with traders and
customers.
Known for his friendly demeanour, he was at
ease and never looked awkward when mingling
with the public, including children, who often
addressed him as “atok”.
The Keluarga Malaysia concept that Ismail
Sabri initiated in October last year is applied to
all programmes, including campaigning.
Meanwhile, Sepang parliamentary
candidate Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun also
reached out to voters in her constituency by
meeting families having breakfast at the Taman
Putra Perdana Hawker Centre in Puchong.
Sungai Buloh parliamentary candidate from
BN Khairy Jamaluddin continued his
campaigning activities by having breakfast with
customers at Original Penang Kayu Nasi
Kandar in Kota Damansara, before
participating in the “Wajik Durian” event
organised by the Federal Village Development
and Security Committee of Kampung Paya
Jaras Tengah.
Pakatan Harapan candidate from PKR Datuk
Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail went on several
walkabouts at the morning market, hawker
centres and eateries in the Bandar Tun Razak
parliamentary constituency at 9am.

have been appointed as executive councilors to
do so, whenever they are free outside of
working hours.

the duties and responsibilities they have been
entrusted with.
“I am confident they will carry out their
duties as usual. Going down to the field is a
normal task, whether the person is an exco or
an assemblyman. But in the evenings, if they
are free from their duties, it is up to them to

But their actual job responsibilities must come
first.

and portfolios, carry out your duties as usual,
help out (campaign) when you are free,” he

New Commonwealth medical head to boost knowledge sharing

KUALA LUMPUR: Enhancing
knowledge sharing in healthcare
among medical professionals and
improving medical student
exchange programmes between
Commonwealth member countries
will be among the priorities of
the newly elected president of
Commonwealth Medical Association
(CMA) Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai.
Rajathurai, who is also the
Malaysian Medical Association
(MMA), said knowledge sharing is an
encouraged practice that has
significantly contributed
to many breakthroughs and
improvements to the standards of
healthcare delivery globally.
“I will be giving emphasis to
knowledge sharing during my term,
besides developing a CMA digital app
to encourage networking among our
Commonwealth colleagues.
“I will also work towards improving
and enhancing medical student
exchange programmes between the
countries, in line with these efforts,” he
said during the installation ceremony
at a hotel here on Saturday.
Rajathurai will serve as president
of CMA for a two-year term. It has
been 21 years since a Malaysian has
been elected as president of CMA.
The last was Dr P. Krishnan, who
served from 2001-2004.
He added that issues like access to
healthcare, global increase in cases of
non-communicable diseases, mental
health, ageing populations and
climate change will also be
addressed, among others.
“CMA has a wide network of
medical associations from the 54
Commonwealth nations. I am looking
forward to meeting them regularly.”
CMA was established in 1952 to
assist and strengthen the capacities of
medical associations within the
Commonwealth countries.

KUALA LUMPUR: The local Sikh
community can now utilise the
World Sikh Chamber of Commerce
(WSCC) Malaysia Chapter as a
platform for commercially driven
networking opportunities, and also
a meeting point to share and offer
service-related assistance.
WSCC Malaysia, which was
launched in June, has about 700 members
and is expecting to double that by the end of
the year.
Its chairman, Datuk Dr Balwant Singh
Bains (pic), said he initiated the chapter of the
India-based WSCC with the idea of providing
an avenue among the Sikh diaspora in
Malaysia to develop business-related
connections and upskilling.
“In the past, we had similar networks but
they were regional. The digitalisation process
during Covid-19, that connected
us through video calls and
online meetings, stimulated the
commencement of the Malaysia
Chapter,” Balwant told theSun
recently.
“This platform is envisioned to
showcase the progress within
the Sikh community, mediate
networking opportunities between
business groups, create visibility
and exposure, and build credibility
for Sikh-owned ventures.”
Balwant said for Sikhs who are diversifying
their entrepreneurial ventures, a platform like
WSCC is vital to interlink their businesses
and create a healthy supply-and-demand
ecosystem within the community.
“The Sikh community is hardworking and
resilient. We are quite self-driven in the sense
that our forefathers did odd jobs to sustain in
a new land, and yet they never extended their
hands for help.”
He added that the Sikhs are known for
being a close-knit community where
gurdwaras (Sikh temples) are the
community’s focal point in forging unity and
togetherness.
“Langar or community kitchen in a
gurdwara is a place where everyone is treated
as equals – beyond ethnicities, religions and
social status. Hence, unification is nurtured
through communal dining and sharing
of meals.”
Balwant said unity in the Sikh community
is cultivated through selfless service. WSCC
encourages its members to connect and
interact with one another by employing the
spirit of ik-mik, which means “meeting one to
one”, in the Punjabi language.
“Service is a fundamental value in Sikhism
as it builds bridges among the diverse and
heterogeneous Malaysian society,” Balwant
added.
According to its website, WSCC is a
“premier multistakeholder community of
visionary Sikhs” committed to shaping the
community’s future and society at large.
Established in 2020, the organisation is the first
and single largest entity of prominent Sikh
businessmen, industrialists, entrepreneurs
and professionals in India and abroad.

SUNGAI BULOH: The Health Ministry will
continue to monitor Covid-19 cases during the
15th general election (GE15) campaign period,
as well as intensify efforts to curb the spread of
the virus.
Caretaker Health Minister Khairy
Jamaluddin said that although there has been
an increase in daily Covid-19 cases, the
situation is still under control based on the low
number of admissions due to the virus
infection.
“So far, like Omicron, even though the cases
are on the rise, hospital admissions are not high
and the death rate is low,” he said.
“There is a wave of infections, but in terms of
severity, it is not that bad.”
Khairy said the Health Ministry has
recommended several standard operating
procedures (SOPs) to the Election Commission
for the GE15 that is Covid-19 safe, which will be
announced soon.
He added that health departments in all
states have also been instructed to provide
additional officers to help Covid-19 patients go
out to vote at their respective polling centres.
“We do not want them to be at the polling
station for too long. The patients will go to the
centre, register and show their MySejahtera
status to the health officer. There is no need to
queue. They will cast their vote and leave,”
Khairy, who is contesting for the Sungai Buloh
parliamentary seat, told reporters in Kota
Damansara here yesterday.
In October, Khairy announced that the
Health Ministry would implement the Covid
Safe Election SOP by recommending that
individuals who are positive for Covid-19 be
allowed to exercise their responsibilities as
voters in GE15.
Separately, Khairy said he will focus on
several issues in Sungai Buloh in his election
manifesto, which would be released soon.

seven-cornered contest for the seat. The
contenders are Pakatan Harapan candidate
Datuk R. Ramanan, Mohd Ghazali Md Hamin
from PAS, Mohd Akmal Mohd Yusoff from

PETALING JAYA: With a steep rise
in the use of private aircraft during
the 15th general election (GE15)
season, the Civil Aviation
Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is
leaving no stone unturned in
ensuring airworthiness of
airplanes and the safety of
passengers are at the highest level.
CAAM CEO Datuk Capt
Chester C.S. Voo (pic) said
yesterday the increase involves
both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.
He said to cater to the increase, companies
that hold air operator certificates (AOC) are
expected to lease more aircraft, especially
helicopters.
“CAAM has been consistent in overseeing
the safety of all aircraft in Malaysia. CAAM’s
flight operations and airworthiness division
ensure the leased helicopters are airworthy and
are operated within the scope of the approvals
granted to AOC holders,” he told theSun, adding
that CAAM will also publish safety information
on adverse weather operations.

Datuk Peter Anthony, who was detained
on Saturday night for investigation over
a commotion outside the nomination
centre for the Tenom parliamentary
seat, was released on police bail
yesterday.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk
Idris Abdullah said police have opened
an investigation paper following a
report and the case was being
investigated under Section 24A(2) of the
Elections Offences Act 1954 and Section
147 of the Penal Code.
Peter, who is Melalap assemblyman,
was arrested on Saturday to facilitate
investigations, he said yesterday.

Security personnel were forced to
use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
On Saturday, Idris said the
commotion broke out after Peter’s
nomination was rejected by the Election
Commission (EC) on grounds that he
had a pending court case.
On May 26, the Kuala Lumpur
sessions court sentenced Peter to three
years in prison and a fine of RM50,000
after he was found guilty of forging a
letter on a contract for the maintenance
and service of mechanical and electrical
systems at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
On Aug 1, the court allowed Peter’s
application for a stay of the sentence
and conviction.
Peter filed the application to enable

and its crew are certified fit and hold valid
licences.”

Programme (NHDP) trainee who was attending
a goalkeeper skills workshop at Raja Ashman
Shah Hockey Academy here, died at the Perak
National Sports Council hostel yesterday.

Shapawi Ismail said Bill Wolfson Lianie, 14,
who had complained of discomfort and
giddiness, suddenly collapsed in his room at
about 7am.
“The management called for an ambulance
and tried to resuscitate him before he was
taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
“After several attempts to resuscitate him,
he was pronounced dead and until now, the
cause of death cannot be ascertained,” he said
yesterday.

the most crucial factor in flight safety is a robust
safety management system within an aviation
company, which comprises open reporting
methods, resolving issues and the promotion
and review of safety.
“Through our survelliance, CAAM will
continue to reach out to all aircraft operators to
promote safety to prevent any accidents.
“Our inspectors will be on the ground to
carry out adhoc surveillance to see that all
aircraft operators are complying with the
relevant rules. The team that will oversee this
will be led by me and assisted by CAAM deputy
CEOs Capt Norazman Mahmud and Zainul
Abidin Maslan to manage aircraft regulatory
matters and air traffic control services.”
On the use of drones during GE15, Voo said
drones will only be allowed to be flown with
approvals granted by CAAM.
He said with public safety in mind, such
approvals will be issued to applicants who are
certified drone operators and have submitted
documents with a comprehensive risk
assessment of the location where the machines
are to be used.
“Our top priority is public safety, which will
never be compromised. As for the use of drones
in the event of floods and disasters, CAAM will
work closely with the relevant government
agencies and grant fast approvals after carrying
out risk assessments due to the prompt need for
humanitarian and disaster relief aid,” he said.

Family evacuated
after bund bursts
SHAH ALAM: A family of seven had to
be evacuated after their house was
flooded after a bund in Tanjong Karang
burst yesterday.
Selangor Fire and Rescue
Department director Norazam Khamis
said the seven, aged between four and
70, were moved to a neighbour’s
house.
“Eight rescuers from the Tanjong
Karang Fire and Rescue station were
rushed to the scene after being alerted
of the incident at 4.07am,” he said in a
statement.
Norazam added that the one-metre
water has since receded and the
situation was under control.
He said they were in contact with the
Selangor Department of Irrigation and
Drainage to repair the bund.

Four arrested over
election offences
KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested four
individuals – one in Selangor and three
in Sarawak – on Saturday, which was
nomination day for the 15th general
election (GE15), for allegedly
committing election offences.
Police GE15 operations director
Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, who is head
of the Internal Security and Public
Order Department, said eight
investigation papers have been
opened.
The investigations were carried out
for offences under the Penal Code,
namely Section 500 for defamation,
Section 447 for criminal trespass,
Section 506 for criminal intimidation
and Section 147 for rioting.
Investigations were also carried out
for offences under Section 233 (1) of
the Communications and Multimedia
Act 1998, Civil Aviation Regulations
2016 and the Election Act, he said
yesterday.
Hazani added that police have also
issued 289 permits for political talks,
with 52 of the permits issued for Perak,
47 for Johor, 32 for Selangor, 29 for
Kedah, 28 for Sabah, 22 for Sarawak,
18 for Penang, 15 for Negri Sembilan,
while Pahang and Malacca had
14 each.
Meanwhile, Terengganu had seven
permits, Kelantan had six, Perlis had
three and Kuala Lumpur had two.

ISLAMABAD: The assassination attempt on
former prime minister Imran Khan and his
accusation it was a plot involving a senior
intelligence officer has pushed Pakistan into a
“dangerous phase”, analysts said.
Imran escaped with bullet wounds to his
legs from an assassination attempt on
Thursday as he led supporters on a highly
publicised march to the capital to press for
early elections.
He claimed on Friday that Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana
Sanaullah, and Major-General Faisal Nasir – an
intelligence officer – plotted to have him killed
and have it blamed on “a religious fanatic”.
“The political situation in Pakistan has
entered into a dangerous phase,” said
academic and political analyst Tauseef Ahmed
Khan, who is also a board member of the
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
“In a country with a history of political
chaos, the sounds echo.”
Despite being ousted by a vote of
no-confidence in April, Imran retains mass
public support – winning a string of
by-elections even as he battles a slew of legal
cases brought by the current government.
As the pressure rises, the government’s
dependence on the “deep state” – a term often
used to refer to the powerful military – for its
survival is increasing, Ahmed said.
“It is a perilous situation, not only for the
democratic process but also for the country.
“The issue(s) of poverty, hunger, and

Man wanted by
US still in S’pore
SINGAPORE: A Singaporean businessman
wanted by the United States for violating
sanctions on North Korea is currently in the
city-state where he is under investigation.
The US State Department on Thursday
offered US$5 million (RM24 million) for
information on businessman Kwek Kee Seng,
blaming him for numerous fuel deliveries to
North Korea and ship-to-ship transfers as well
as money laundering through front companies.
Prosecutors in New York issued an arrest
warrant for Kwek after one of his oil tankers, the
M/T Courageous, was seized by Cambodia on a
US request over purported sanctions violations.
In a statement on Saturday, Singapore police
said they have sought clarification from their US
counterparts as they have kept them informed
about the ongoing probe by local authorities.
Kwek, 62, owns the Swanseas Port Services
shipping company based in Singapore.
The State Department’s Rewards for Justice
programme had said his exact location was not
known and that he has also been identified as
being in North Korea, Cambodia and Thailand.
But Singapore police said in their statement
that “Kwek is presently in Singapore”.
He has been under investigation since April
last year by the Commercial Affairs Department
and his passport has been impounded,

A Will the US and its allies
N important development in
global politics took place
recently when after the end
of the Chinese Communist
Party’s 20th (CCP) congress,
President Xi Jinping on Oct 27 said
China is willing to work with the US to
find ways to get along for the benefit
of both countries.
His position on this conciliatory
message – despite the continuous
stream of anti-Xi and anti-CCP
rhetoric from western media and
some western political leaders – was
clear and unambiguous.
This was so that as major powers,
China and the US should strengthen
communication and cooperation to
help provide stability to the world.
This offer of peace and
collaboration in international
relations from China appears to have
been ignored or rejected.
For those following western media
on its China coverage, it was not
surprising that the weeks leading up
to the 20th party congress, which
ended on Oct 22, should see a
crescendo in the anti-Xi and anti-
China coverage.
A daily barrage of headlines from
western mainstream media appeared
to sensationalise every possible bit of
reportage to mislead, instil fear and
anxiety, and denigrate China’s leaders
and the CCP.
Many of the stories ran from the
melodramatic to the farcical, with
rival media trying to outdo each other
in convincing their readers of the
existential threat that China poses to
the rest of the world.
Other “analytical” stories focusing
on Xi and the CCP appear framed to
lead to the regime change objective
which mainstream western media has
increasingly set up as its main
mission in reporting on China.
Perhaps the most prominent was
one recently proclaiming that “Anti-
Xi protest spreads in China and
worldwide”.
This report, like others lambasting
Xi for his authoritarian leadership
and repressive rule, has typically

Climate change and vulnerable communities
CLIMATE change is going at a pace
faster than expected. Its impact and
pattern show that it is taking place
with greater severity.
Shifting weather patterns,
increase in rainfall, rising sea levels,
intensifying heat islands and more
extreme weather events are
devastating evidence of both rapidly
changing climate and global
warming, with direct and indirect
consequences to communities.
It is also well established that
those most vulnerable to the adverse
impacts of climate change are
generally the poorest communities –
particularly vulnerable due to their
poverty making them less able to
adapt – already burdened by deep
inequities and compounded
disadvantages.
The impacts of climate change
also worsen existing poverty and
widen inequality between gender,
age, class and disability.
For example, those who are
vulnerable to flooding, sea level rise
and rain-induced landslides are
people who are poor and occupy the
cheaper, high-risk areas for shelter
and livelihood.
An increase in rainfall results in
landslides and floods.

and may leave land waterlogged
when it retreats, a daunting challenge
for any farmer or communities living
in low-lying areas.

Fidel Castro, Gamal Abdel Nasser,

Saddam Hussein and Muammar

Is regime change more the

Today the target of western media is
focused on Russia under Vladimir

ESG compliance in corporate transactions and

company. From a legal perspective, due
diligence is conducted on each individual
element of “environment”, “social” and
“governance” to assess whether a business
complies with local and international
sustainability guidelines, frameworks, and
regulations.

for review include examining a company’s
waste management process and pollution
prevention measures. A step-up with ESG in
mind will now mean examining whether
stakeholders in the supply chain adopt ESG

I grew up on a family cattle ranch in Montana in
the United States. Through that experience, I
learned the values of a strong work ethic, hyper-

Cattle ranching is manually intensive work
and if you don’t perform a task fully or
completely, life is on the line – either the life of
the animal or even the life of a family member
as ranching can be dangerous.
In addition to hard work and accountability,
I learned that teamwork is central. Everyone in
the family had to pull their weight equally in
order to keep the business running successfully.
My mother, father, sister, brother and I were
equal partners and each fulfilled critical roles in
the operation.
What traits do you look for in your talent or
how do you decide who is right for a job?
In the role that I play today, I am primarily
hiring people leaders. Setting aside the correct
match in skills and experience, I am always on
the lookout for someone who has demonstrated
people-first leadership and has a history of
instilling a culture of continuous improvement.
In addition to that, I look for a strong sense of
ambition and energy, demonstrated problem-
solving skills, and a continued willingness to
learn – no matter where they are in their career.
Finally, I always appreciate individuals who
think and act beyond the role that they currently
fulfil.
What advice can you offer those looking to
start their career/own business?
Don’t hesitate, and just get started. If you don’t
feel that you have found your calling, you can
always change. The best way to navigate after
your start, if you feel that your current role is not
a good fit, is to seek out mentors and senior
leaders/technical experts whom you respect,
and get guidance.
There are often opportunities that exist
within a company that are a better fit for your
skills and passions.
What do you want to accomplish in the next
five years?
Over the next five years, I want to change many
people’s lives for the better, I want to have an
outsized positive impact on the environment, I
want to pay forward the skills and knowledge
that I have been given, and I want to continue to
prioritise my family, my health and my
wellness.
How has mentorship made a difference in
your professional life?
Throughout my career, I have had a series of
both formal and informal mentors – meaning
we either acknowledged and identified it as
mentorship or it was more casual and
developed organically. I think both are critical.
Formal mentorships are typically structured
and goal-oriented while informal mentorships
tend to be conversational and often at a time when
what is needed is a supportive conversation.
The most significant benefit to me was to
have someone to speak to about problems,
bounce ideas off of, provide feedback, and gain
awareness of what exists out there in the world.
While one’s success isn’t in the mentors that one
keeps, it does help in advancing one’s career.

career.
People have limitless potential if you take the

charged with money laundering under
Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money
Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing
and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act
2001.
He was alleged to have committed
the offence as R&M of SFI by
transferring RM115 million, allegedly
proceeds from illegal activities, from
SFI’s CIMB current account to SFI’s
CIMB interest-bearing fixed deposit
account in February 2018.
The RM115 million comprised part of
the RM120 million deposit paid by
Pelangi Prestasi for the purchase of SFI
assets for RM1.2 billion. The sale of SFI
assets and the treatment of the deposit
paid are matters that have been and are
still pending proceedings before the
civil courts.

In an update to Apple iOS devices, Twitter
said those who “sign up now” for US$7.99 a
month can receive the blue checkmark next to
their user names, “just like the celebrities,
companies and politicians you already follow”.
Before Musk took over, blue checkmarks
next to a person’s user name meant Twitter
confirmed the account belonged to the person
or company claiming it. It was not immediately
clear how or if Twitter planned to verify the
identity of the user beyond charging a fee.
According to the iOS notification, other

The event space featured a rooftop deck,
food village, outdoor games, the alpine stage,
and the camper zone. Activities included a
sustainability trail walk, morning yoga,
handicraft, a ball maze, and corn hole for the
daytime, and music performances from the
evening.
For Edelweiss cocktails, we had a choice of a
sweet and sour strawberry yuzu cocktail or a
spicy ginger and pear. Both were exceptional
and delicious. You could also have an ice-cold
refreshing Edelweiss made with pure alpine
water, wheat malt, barley malt, hops and top-
fermented yeast straight from the can.
In the food village, there was a variety of eats,
including chicken wings from the grill station,
western/fusion food such as macaroni &
cheese, down to snacks like French fries and
sandwiches.
Of course, vegetarian guests were not left
out, as they had plant-based food made with
Harvest Gourmet, such as plant-based satay,
burger, and nugget.
The meat substitute food also allowed non-
vegetarians to dip their toes into trying plant-
based food, as cutting down on meat

consumption is better for the environment.
For the fun handicraft activity, we were given
Edelweiss stencils and enamel cups to
personalise and decorate as a souvenir to take
home as a reminder of our Alpine-inspired
adventure weekend getaway.
The sustainability trail walk and morning
yoga sessions also allowed attendees to take in
and appreciate nature. We went on a trail walk
led by husband-and-wife duo Eddie Chan and
Pat Ang, specialists who oversaw the Awana Bio
Park, and explored the lush beauty of the
Montane Timber Forest of the Awana BIO Park.
The talk was very interesting and we learned
about how Chalet Edelweiss Unwind held the
event with sustainability in mind, as they used
reusable bamboo decorations that could easily
be upcycled or composted.
Besides that, they also used a rubber grass
mat for the footway surface instead of heavy-
duty metals or concrete, showing how festivals
can be done sustainably.
For the paths that required minimal
concretising, affected plants were transplanted

to life in the evenings, including a first-night
performance by American singer, songwriter
and producer Jeremy Zucker, known for his

their hearts out to his moving performances.

owned the stages of local and international
music festivals.
A playlist of chill tracks also hyped up the

Everyone had fun with the diverse music,
glamping in the elevated cool driving range,
having great beer while chilling in the
hammock.

stories it wanted to tell, Wiens explained that it

Meteorite that smashed into Mars shook planet: NASA
SCIENTISTS who study Mars on
Thursday revealed the remarkable
Christmas gift they received from the
planet last year.
On Dec 24, 2021, a meteorite hit
Mars’ surface, triggering magnitude 4
tremors, which were detected by
NASA’s InSight spacecraft – which
landed on the planet four years ago –
some 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers)
away.
The true origin of this so-called
marsquake was only confirmed when
the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
(MRO) was able to take a picture of
the newly formed crater created by
the hit when it flew over the impact
site less than 24 hours later.
The image is impressive, showing
blocks of ice that were spewed up
onto the planet’s surface around the
150m wide and 21m deep hole.
The crater is the largest ever
observed since the MRO began its
Mars orbit 16 years ago.
And though meteorite impacts on
Mars are not rare, “we never thought
we’d see anything that big,“ Ingrid
Daubar, who works on the InSight
and MRO missions, told reporters
during a recent press conference to
announce the findings.
Researchers estimate that the
meteorite itself would have measured
between 16 to 39 feet across.

world around them. They
watch and learn how
others talk, interact, and respond to
situations. For infants and toddlers,
parents are their first teachers. As
they grow older, they then observe
and learn from other family or
friends, babysitters, and from
television and media.
As such, it will do well for us to
remember that children will
emulate what they have observed,
whether the behaviour is good or
bad. Even if the adults are not
intentionally trying to teach them,
non-verbal messages by way of our
actions tend to be retained more
strongly as compared to our verbal
messages. Without realising our
own bad habits, we may be
negatively impacting our children’s
development.
Watch what you say
In the first few years of life, language
learning expands at the most rapid
pace. The way we talk and the
words we use play a big role in
shaping how the child will speak in
the future. You may unintentionally
curse or scold out loud in certain
social situations, and your child
who does not understand the
meaning or implication of the word

“The month has not yet ended but
we can already say practically
without fear of contradiction that it
will be the hottest (in Spain) since
1961,” when records began to be
collated, said Ruben del Campo of
Spain’s meteorological service
Aemet.
If extrapolated data from
historical reconstructions is taken

ERARD PIQUE played his last game at
the Nou Camp yesterday in Barcelona’s
2-0 win over Almeria and told fans he
would be back during an emotional
speech.
The 35-year-old centreback, who has won 30
trophies with the club, including three Champions
League titles and eight La Ligas, will retire from
football after Wednesday’s visit to Osasuna.
Pique, who was cheered by fans throughout the
game after more than 14 years in Barcelona’s first-
team squad, enjoyed a lap of honour at the end of
the game and was tossed into the air by his
teammates, as over 92,000 fans stayed in Nou
Camp to pay homage to him.
“Thanks to my teammates, the staff and
everyone who helps us to make everything so
easy,” Pique said in a speech to the supporters
after the game.

in Spain and Andorra and has bought some
international football TV rights.
“This is my home, at some point I will return.
It’s the moment to part ways for a time and come
back stronger. I’ll enjoy some time with my
family and friends, I’m looking forward to
starting my new life.
“(Being replaced) was a weight off my
shoulders, the last few months have not been
easy. I go with the satisfaction that I’ve given
everything.
“Sometimes it goes better, sometimes worse,
but I’ve given everything. That makes me proud.
I’m leaving calmly, happily, with my homework
