1. Release of Carbon Dioxide and Water During Respiration.

Color of Phenol Red

Live Seeds Dead Seeds

Before Exposure Red Red

After Exposure Gold or Yellow Red

The color of the phenol red is “red.” After exposing it to the air inside the setup with dead
seeds, the color remained the same. On the other hand, exposing it to the air inside the setup with
lives seeds, it changes color from red to gold or yellow. The change of color of the phenol red to
gold or yellow indicates that there is oxygen present. From the results, we can infer that during
respiration CO2 is released.
2. Release of Heat Energy During Respiration.

Temperature Reading(°C)

Live Seeds Dead Seeds

Initial 0 0

After 40 mins. Warm (20°C maybe) 0

Interpret the results and explain.

Before, the initial temperature reading of both seeds is 0 °C. After 40 minutes the
temperature of the live seeds increased, while the temperature of the dead seeds remained the
same. From the data in the result, we can infer that live seeds releases heat during respiration
which led to the increase in temperature. On the other hand, the seeds are dead, which means
respiration is not occurring, that is why the temperature remained the same.
Explain the changes that took place in:
1. Give the reaction involved to obtain the result to release CO 2 and energy.

 During Respiration, Sugar and Oxygen are used by the plants to provide energy for the
plant, at the same time is releases carbon dioxide and heat.

2. What did you observe in the side phenol red with the living seeds?

 It changed color from red to yellow or gold.

Explain this result:
 When phenol red reacts to carbon dioxide, it changes its color from red to yellow or gold.
The change of color from red to yellow or gold indicates the presence of carbon dioxide
coming from the respiration of live seeds.

3. How about the phenol red with the dead seeds?

 It did not change color and remained red.

Explain this result:
 When phenol red reacts to carbon dioxide, it changes its color from red to yellow or gold.
Since the color did not changes, it means that there is no carbon dioxide from the dead
seeds.
Questions:
1. What are the products of respiration observed in the experiments?

 Based on the experiments, during respiration, heat and carbon dioxide are
released.

2. What is the reason why the seeds are boiled seeds?

 The seeds were boiled in order to kill it to stop respiration from occurring.

3. Explain why initially the seeds were soaked in water.

 The seeds were soaked in water to let it germinate first.
