THEYYAM
Theyyam is a ritual dance performed in Malabar. It broadly
encompasses Hindu ritualistic tenets. People of the region consider
Theyyam as a channel to god.
NAZAM
(poem)
The textile uses the Persian design element paisley
(it's believed that the pattern was derived from the
Zoroastrian symbol of a cypress tree combined with
a floral spray, to represent life and fertility.) here it’s
the combination of pattern made from paisley and
the yarn radiating out of the pattern. It tells the
story of the many possibilities and outcomes that
can be derived.
And the artist use this piece as a new direction of
Kashmiri craft as work of art. But to me it’s more of
a consolidation of all the ideas in the form of yarn
and the enlightenment that is derived from it.
ROOM IN A
ROOM
This textile was made using discarded yarn from
the “DAWN”, a work by the same designer. And
here he emphasizes that we should be mindful of
what we are leaving behind and think of the
generation to come.
The single source of light in the room shows the
hope in the enclosed box we are confined in, and
the walls are having a bright cheerful paint and
the single source of light though gloomy tells us
of hoping for better.
The different variations of styles used created a
sfumato effect- where tones and shades of colors are
allowed to gradually shade into one another. It tells of
the how the textile industry represented as the life
blood of India boosted the independence moment.
And how mahatma Gandhi uses this as a symbol for
the masses to rally to. The ball of yarn and the white
doves represent the solid unity and the piece that
holds together this extremely diverse country.
