Organizational Structure of Atlanta International Airport

The success of airport operations is depended on its organizational structure. The Atlanta

International Airport, the busiest airport in the world and can accommodate more than 100

million passengers annually, can be found in the state of Georgia in the United States

(HAYWARD, 2022). The organizational structure of the airport covers the security and

regulatory requirements, passenger flow, air traffic control, aircraft movement areas, aprons, and

gates. Therefore, this essay addresses critical considerations and design elements of airside and

landside operations that have contributed to the airport's success.

It serves as the principal hub for Delta, in addition to many smaller regional and

international airlines such as British Airways and Qatar Airways. At ATL, passengers have

access to terminals: the domestic terminal, which can be found on the western side of the airport,

and the global terminal, which can be found on the eastern side. The airport has 192 gates that

accommodate passengers boarding and alighting from planes. The airport terminals are labeled

T, A, B, C, D, and E. and F (DORAN, 2022). When traveling from one terminal to another,

passengers can take the movable sidewalks within the Aviation Mall or the Airline Train.

The Concourse C was expanded from its initial configuration to handle 26 domestic

flights through a design-build agreement with The AERO Organization. The gates on Concourse

C used to be accessed by a stairway on the entrance level (HAYWARD, 2022). Passengers

needed to use the stairwell and exit onto the ramp to board the plane in this configuration.

Improvements to Concourse C have made the airport experience more pleasant for passengers.
There are five runways on Hartsfield-4,700-acre Jackson's property. All five runways

extend in an east-west direction, with two to the north of the terminals and 3 to the southward.

The airport's five runways allow for simultaneous takeoffs and landings without the risk of

planes colliding. As a result, all runways can be used almost constantly; over 90 planes may

arrive in a session, and another 100 can take off in good weather.

There are two FAA air traffic control officers for each runway. Aircraft are directed to

and from the runways and taxiways by ground controllers. The tower controller's job is to keep

an eye on planes as they approach the runway, while they are in the sky, and after they have

taken off (HAYWARD, 2022). Other supervisors assist with pre-departure gateway inspections.

Airport tower controllers monitor planes using radar screens and paper flight sheets stored on

racks directly in front of them. When an airplane changes controllers, the base controller

transfers the flight sheet to the tower operator.

The number of passengers handled by Atlanta International Airport in 2021 was over 75

million, up 76percent from the 42.9 million handled in 2020, based on a news broadcast for that

year. There was a record of 707,661 flights and landings, a rise of 29% from 2020 (DORAN,

2022). Increasing numbers of passengers and flights indicate that ATL has recovered from the

COVID-19 epidemic and is again attracting many domestic vacationers. When passengers arrive,

they check the airport's websites for the latest screening waiting lists and sign up to receive an

email notification if the wait times have changed. Arriving at the airport at least two hours before

a direct flight and 3 hours before ATL highly recommend a foreign tour. The Global Entry

Program, the mobile passport, TSA PreCheck, and CLEAR are all initiatives designed to

streamline the customs and safety clearance processes.

The brand-new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Main Terminal accepts passengers at Atlanta's

International Airport. The terminal covers 111,484 square meters and has 12 entrances, 8

security checks, different levels for flight arrivals and departures, and a concrete apron

measuring 148,831 square meters for parking planes (HAYWARD, 2022). The organizational

structure allows for the smooth running of operations.

Conclusively, the success of the Atlanta international airport is attributed to its

organization and design of the airside and landside operations. Being the busiest airport, it has

laid suitable measures to control traffic, and its expansion will allow for more passengers.
