KALINGA
Vernacular architecture defines as comprising the dwellings and all other buildings of the people.
Related to their environmental contexts and available resources they are customarily owner- or
community-built, utilizing traditional technologies. All forms of vernacular architecture are built
to meet specific needs, accommodating the values, economies, and ways of life of the cultures
that produce them.
In relation with all, the word “Kalinga” will be the overall concept of the barangay civic center
with the theme of modern vernacular. The barangay civic center with be the center of the town
and foster a strong local and national identity, as well as providing public services and having a
positive impact on the community. Together with design consideration, design philosophy
Utilizing traditional architecture styles and elements in the building provides care and support
throughout their community without a wild departure from their traditions and heritage.
Design THEME
Form CONCEPT
The form idea of the form of the building comes from the concept of form’s transformation using
additive and subtractive process.
Structural CONCEPT
The construction of the barangay civic center maintained the predominant use of locally sourced
materials while integrating inimitable Filipino motifs and forms. The result is a pleasant balance
between a modern form of the structure with a vernacular finishing in both interior and exterior.
The structure also shows symmetry and proportion which provides a sense of harmony and
balance in the façade of the building.
Color CONCEPT
BROWN – Wood appear very comfortable, and warm. Wood brown is used in different part of
the building as an aesthetic like in the accent wall in the canteen and in the ceiling of the lobby
WHITE – White walls gives purity, innocence, and candor. While white with no design helps
diffuse light sources and reduce shadows
GRAY- Gray walls gives neutral to calming effect in the building.
GREEN – Green color is the color of nature. It is linked to balance, nature, and hope which
brings us calm, relax and lower the blood pressure. Green color can be seen in plants located
different floor area.
Inspiration
The inspiration of the stilt structure of the building was the bahay kubo and the use of solid stone
foundation was inspired by the Bahay na bato of the Phillipines.
DESIGN Consideration
1. SAFETY AND SECURITY
The design can protect the building, with prevention of anything that may threaten them.
Security by means of investigation of crimes and community participation in efforts to
address cause of crime.
2. Natural Lighting was introduced at the Gym part of the building for free flowing of light.
3. ACCESSIBILITY
The design must be consider determining the accessibility of establishments, community
facilities, roads, transportation, and ingress/egress especially to people who are physically
challenged.
4. COMMUNITY & DEMOGRAPHY
To know who the beneficiaries and how many people will be accommodated. To provide
functional and spatial surroundings and spaces.
