A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE X – UNIT 1 – MODULE 1

I. Objectives At the end of the discussion, 90% of the learners must be

able to:
1. Enumerate the different types of plate boundaries.
2. Illustrate the different types of plate boundaries and its
possible effect in the environment as well as in biotic and
abiotic factors.
3. Cultivate knowledge in line with the highest state of
social, legal, and ethical concern

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Plate Tectonics
Concepts: Plate Tectonics
- a theory that describes the structure of the earth's
crust and many related phenomena as the result of
the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates moving
slowly over the underlying mantle.
- The plates move very slowly but constantly, and this
movement is called tectonics; thus, the theory of
moving lithospheric plates is called plate tectonics.

Three different type of plate boundaries that are classified

by their movement:
- Convergent boundary – collision of plate tectonics
- Divergent boundary – plate tectonics move away
from each other.
- Transform plate boundary – two plates sliding past
each other.

III. Learning Methodology/Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities/Daily Routine

1. Greetings Good morning class.
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
2. Prayer (The teacher will select one student to
lead the prayer)

3. Cleaning their own respective places (Student’s will look for their respective
place to ensure that there is no trash in
their side)

4. Checking of attendance (Student’s will say “present” when the

teacher calls their names)

5. Building rapport through questioning (Student’s will be ask by the teacher, how
was their day)

B. Review
Let’s have a review about what we have done last
Thursday.

Can anyone tell me what we did last time? We had a pre-test about the plate
tectonics.

What are your reflections of taking that pre-test I realized that there are certain concepts
examinations? that I need to be improve.

Do you get a high score or relatively a low score? Average score

What are the things you must do in order to enhance I think the best thing to do is to study
your knowledge and skills about our future lessons? hard and listen to the discussion about
the plate tectonics.

C. Motivation
So, before we formally start our lesson proper, let’s
have first the ice breaker namely, Mr. and Ms. Q and
A: groupakan.

This is a game from the noontime show “It’s

Showtime” in ABS-CBN.

The class will be divided into 6 groups, regardless of

the number of members.
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
You will just simply play a “rock, paper and scissors”
in a different level, because you are allowed to
portray different things, personnel, or elements.

Your goal is to give a strong statement or

information that will degrade your opponent’s
choice.

The winning team will be determined by the chosen

judge.

So, are you ready class? Yes!

Then, let’s start!

D. Lesson Proper/Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

When you first heard or read the words or phrase Plate tectonics pertains to the movements
“plate tectonics”, what is the first thing that comes to that cause certain phenomena in our
your mind? world.

Okay great answer, who wants to follow? Plate tectonics causes the development of
mountains, earthquake, and volcanoes.

So, it’s great that you have an initial knowledge

about tectonics plates.

Can someone enumerate the different types of plate Flat plate tectonic and rough plate
tectonics? tectonics.

Okay nice try, so, to fulfill the misconceptions let’s

start our discussion about the plate tectonics and its
subtopics.

This our table of contents

SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY

To provide some overview, in this lesson, the topics

will focus solely on a theory that explains the
existence of volcanoes and other geologic features.

The outcomes that are expected you to manifest are:

First, you should identify the types of boundaries
created because of lithospheric movements.
Secondly, you must relate the movement of Earth’s
lithosphere to the occurrence of different geologic
changes. And finally, you will explain the processes
that are taking place along the boundaries.

Let’s have some reflection in line to our introduction.

Our country is blessed with so many land features

such as mountains and volcanoes. These features can
be sources of different minerals or can be used for
agricultural purposes.

Have you ever wondered why our country is Yes!

endowed with these kinds of geologic features?

In this module, we will study thoroughly the

framework that will enable us to understand how
and why several features of the Earth continuously
change. This theory is what we call “Plate Tectonics.”
This describes the events within the Earth that give
rise to mountain ranges, volcanoes, earthquake
belts, and other features of the Earth’s surface.

To set a goal and objectives every student must

manifest and embodied the following learning
competencies and objectives.

In this module, you should be able to:

1. Describe the distribution of active volcanoes,

earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts.

2. Describe the different types of plate boundaries.

SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
3. Explain the different processes that occur along
the plate boundaries.

Do you have any question in this part?

None
So, I have a quick trivia in here.

Do you know that our continents are once intact and No, Sir, is that true?
connected to one another?

So, this is Alfred Wegener, he is the proponent of the

continental drift hypothesis in 1915. Also, he
published “The Origin of Continents and Oceans

Continental Drift Theory is a supercontinent called

Pangaea began breaking apart about 200 million
years ago.

This is the Pangaea

That was break apart throughout time.

Continental drift hypothesis, stated that continents

“drifted” to present positions.

So why do you think Albert Wegener believed that I think maybe because of the traces of the
continents are once intact before? edges that fits to one another.

Okay, precisely!

Because of these following evidences:

Fit of the continents
Fossil evidence
Rock type and structural similarities
Paleoclimatic evidence

To formally open the discussion about the plate Tectonic plates create the mountain,
tectonics, can I ask someone what plate tectonics is? earthquake, cracks and volcanic
eruptions that cause by its movement.

Okay thank you Ms. Unisa.

SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that explains
how major landforms are created as a result of
Earth’s subterranean movements. The theory, which
solidified in the 1960s, transformed the earth
sciences by explaining many phenomena, including
mountain building events, volcanoes, and
earthquakes.

Can anyone tell me what is this picture all about? It is about the earth and its layers.

Okay, magnificent! This shows the different layers of

Earth that is compromising crust, mantle, and core,
as well as the lithosphere that are located at the
crust and the upper part of the mantle.
Earth’s lithosphere consists of layers, the crust and
the upper part of the mantle.

The crust is made of a variety of solid rocks like

sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.

The crust is thickest in a part where a relatively

young mountain is present and thinnest along the
ocean floor.

To give you a further information about the crust,

these are the following of its kind.

First one, the continental crust and the other one is

the oceanic crust.

Continental crust is thick, less dense than oceanic

crust, it is about 25 miles (35 kilometers thick under
the continents, and it is mostly composed of granite.

On the other hand, oceanic crust is thin, denser than

continental crust, about 3-5 miles or 8 kilometers
thick under the oceans, and it is mostly composed of
basalt.

So, in this picture, it shows the various tectonic

plates around the world, take some moment in
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
looking it.

Can you find where is the Phillipine Plate and tell me Yes! It is in the upper left portion of the
its location? image.

Is it relatively small or large tectonic plate? Small

Okay very good!

So, to further discuss the world tectonic plates

So, these are the seven larges tectonic plates.

Pacific Plate
North American Plate
Eurasian Plate
African Plate
Antarctic Plate
Indo-Australia Plate
South American Plate

These plates move very slowly but constantly, and

this movement is called tectonics; thus the theory of
moving lithospheric plates is called plate tectonics.

Now, let’s move to the different types of plate

boundaries.

Can anyone tell or guess what are the types of plate Continental, Oceanic and Volcanic plate
boundaries? boundaries.

Okay nice try, thank you!

So, the different types of plate boundaries are:

Convergent plate boundary, Divergent plate
boundary, and Transform plate boundary.

Can I have someone to read the context of this slide.

Yes, Ms. Rafa. (Reads the context on the slide)

The plates move very slowly but
constantly, and this movement is called
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
tectonics; thus, the theory of moving
lithospheric plates is called plate
tectonics.

Okay, thank you very much!

Convergent plate boundaries are the location and

movement of two plates toward each other that
results for a collision.

We have different types of Convergence of tectonic

plates, the first one, the oceanic-continental
convergence which happens when the two different
kinds of plates move toward to each other.

The second one, is the oceanic-oceanic convergence

that happens when two oceanic plates collide and
form convergent movement.

Lastly, the continental-continental convergence that

happens when to continental plates meet and move
towards to each other.

So, this is the summary of the different convergent

plates.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the three The difference between the three
convergent plates? convergent plates is that the first on is
paired with different type of plate, while
the other two is paired to its same type of
plates.

Okay great, all of you learned fast.

The second kind of plate boundary is the divergent

plate boundary that exist where tectonic plates
move apart from each other. Unlike convergent
boundaries, divergence occurs between only oceanic
or only continental plates, not one of each. The vast
majority of divergent boundaries are found in the
ocean, where they were not mapped or understood
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
until the mid-to-late 20th century.

So, this is the continental drifting that happens when

the plates create divergent movements.

The last type of plate boundary is the transform

plate boundary. Transform Plate Boundaries are
locations where two plates slide past one another.
The fracture zone that forms a transform plate
boundary is known as a transform fault. Most
transform faults are found in the ocean basin and
connect offsets in the mid-ocean ridges. A smaller
number connect mid-ocean ridges and subduction
zones.

This this an image that shows the transform plate

boundaries.

So, we are now done discussing the different types of

the plate boundaries.

IV. Generalization
After our discussion, can anyone tell me, what is a Pangaea is a vast continent that
Pangaea? comprises all the nations before that was
split-up.
Okay great!

How about your understanding in plate tectonics? Plate tectonics happens continuously and
Can you give us some insights about that? slowly that has a good and bad effect in
everyone or everything.

Precisely!

Can anyone tell me or summarize the different types The three different type of plate
of plate boundaries? boundaries are the convergent, divergent
and transform plate boundaries.
Yes, Ms. Edrad.

Okay, precisely!
SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY
Do you have any questions, queries, clarification or None
violent reactions regarding to our lesson?

Okay, if none, then we will have an application of the

topic.

V. Application/Valuing
Using these cookies, apply the three different
movement of the plate tectonics and discuss it how it
differs from one another.

VI. Evaluation
You will be group into 4, regardless of the numbers
of members. Each group are required to answer the
following question that will be flash in the screen.

We have three categories or level, the easy, average,

and difficult. Each level is composed of three
questions.

For easy round, each question corresponds to one

point, in average two points and lastly in difficult
