If your answer is no, you are correct! What if a man bites a dog, can it be considered

News Report, Informative Speech, and Panel Discussion
News Reports
They are based on facts data or information found in newspapers and intend
to inform readers of what is happening in the country and in the world.
 The following are parts of a news report or news story that appear on
newspapers:
Headline- tells what the story is about. It is also a brief statement that catches the
attention of the readers about an incident
Byline- shows who wrote the news story

Lead- tells the most important facts which answer the questions who, what, when,
where, why and how (5 W’s & H). The information answering some of these
questions must be in the opening sentences of the article.
Body/ Explanation- contains more information and details. This section may also
include direct quotes from witnesses.
Additional Information/ Ending – contains the least important information which
gives the readers something to think about.

 The Inverted Pyramid

The Inverted

of 12 tests that news is written from the most

interesting to least interesting facts or data. When done this way, the reader can
decide whether to finish the article or stop reading the entire story.

Informative Speech
An informative speech aims to educate the audience on a particular topic. It
may describe the status or conditions of a certain subject or may give directions on
how to perform an action or a task.

English 10- Quarter I, Module 1 page 4 of 13

The main objective of an informative speech is to provide enlightenment on a
specific topic the audience has no idea or little knowledge about.
It may show how to use a new type of machine, explain an innovative
application in the field of science, describe an expedition of a voyager, or provide
details about a famous person that the audience wants to get informed about. The
topics included in an informative speech should help the audience to understand a
subject better and to remember what they learned about. Providing the information in
a variety of forms such as using visual aids during the speech may increase the
chance of retaining the information in the audience’s mind.

Panel Discussion
Panel discussion is a situation in which a group of people are gathered
together to discuss an issue, often to provide feedback on something, to brainstorm
solutions to a problem or to discuss an issue of public concern in front of an
audience. It also refers to a live, in-person or virtual discussion about a specific topic
among a selected group of experts who share opposing perceptions in front of an
audience.

The following are some of the structured panel discussion formats. These may
be used by students like you during class presentations of topics or issues in different
subject areas especially in a face-to-face class.
1. Main stage Style. This is a short-duration panel discussion with panel members,
normally the keynoter, main stage presenters, or invited panelists. There is no
audience involved for the question and answer session.
2. Question and Answer (Q&A)Style. This starts with a short introduction of the
topic with chosen questions by the moderator followed by audience Q&A.
3. Initial Remarks Style. It consists of a short introduction of the topic with each
panelist taking time to introduce himself or herself as well as his/her standpoints on
the topic. Then, chosen questions are asked by the moderator followed by audience
Q&A.

English 10- Quarter I, Module 1 page 5 of

13
4. Presentation Style. It contains a short introduction of the topic and panelists with
each of them presenting the perspectives on the topic. It is followed by audience
Q&A.
5. Talk Show Format. This format consists of a host/moderator and
guests/panelists who have interesting conversations. Some examples are Tonight
with Boy Abunda, Gandang Gabi Vice (GGV) or Mars Pa More.
6. Debate Formats. This is done when there are two or more distinct or differentiated
viewpoints.
7. Game Show Formats. This is good for more lighthearted topics. You can also
use game show technique and dash it into the structure of the panel. For example,
you can Spin the Wheel via cellphone app to determine who will answer then next
question or what the next question will be.

What’s More
Well, I hope you understand the flow of the topic. At this point, I’m sure you are
ready to test your skill on using information through various sources. Try answering
the activities that follow. You can do it.
Activity 1

Strict border control vital in keeping off
Delta variant from PH- DOH
Angela Coloma, ABS-CBN News
The Department of Health stressed the need for uniform border controls as
authorities sought to keep away the more transmissible Delta coronavirus disease
(COVID-19) variant first detected in virus-ravaged India.
In a public press briefing, Health Spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said
this method worked in detecting 13 COVID-positive Filipino seafarers who had
caughtthe variant.
“Ang pinakaimportante is our border control. Kailangan po pare-pareho ang
ipatupad accross the regions at kung ano ang inirerekomenda natin base sa advice
ng ating experts, ipatupad natin nang maayos," said Vergeire.
(What's important is our border control. We need them uniformly implemented
across the regions and we also have to implement recommendations based on the
advice of our experts.)
The Delta variant increased the number of COVID-19 cases in some western
countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom. Among notable observations
among people who have caught the more transmissible variant are higher rates of
hospitalization and prolonged confinement.
Vergeire also called on local government units to be proactive in testing their
residents for COVID-19 and strengthen their borders, as these help the DOH detect
COVID-19 variants.

Activity 2
Read the excerpts from the late President Corazon Aquino’s speech. Then,
answer the questions that follow.
President Corazon “Cory” Aquino spoke before a joint session of the United States
Congress in September of 1986. It was her first visit to America since FerdinandMarcos had
been overthrown in February of the same year and the Philippines was reckoning with
everything his administration had inflicted. So Aquino lodged an appeal for help. Addressing
the House, she delivered a historic speech that managed to sway in our favor the vote for
an emergency $200-million aid appropriation for rebuilding the Philippine economy, (eleven
times interrupted by applause ending with a standing ovation) (Escobar, 2018).

Cory Aquino's Historic 1986 Speech before the U.S. Congress

WASHINGTON -- Three years ago, I left America in grief to bury my husband,Ninoy

Aquino. I thought I had left it also to lay to rest his restless dream of Philippine
freedom. Today, I have returned as president of a free people.
For the nation, Ninoy became the pleasing sacrifice that answered their
prayers for freedom.
The people vindicated me in an election shamefully marked by government
thuggery and fraud. The opposition swept the election, garnering a clear majority
of votes, even if they ended up, thanks to a corrupt commission on elections, with
barely a third of the seats in parliament. Now, I knew our power.
The rest is the history that dramatically unfolded on your television screens
and across the front pages of your newspapers
You saw a nation, armed with courage and integrity, stand fast by democracy
against threats and corruption. You saw women poll watchers break

out in tears as armed goons crashed the polling places to steal the ballots, but
just the same, they tied themselves to the ballot boxes.
Many of you here today played a part in changing the policy of your country
towards us. We, Filipinos, thank each of you for what you did: For balancing
America's strategic interest against human concerns, illuminates the American vision
of the world.
So, within about a year from a peaceful but national upheaval that overturned
a dictatorship, we shall have returned to full constitutionalgovernment. Given the
polarization and breakdown we inherited, this is no small achievement.
I will not stand by and allow an insurgent leadership to spurn our offer of
peace and kill our young soldiers and threaten our new freedom.
Yet, I must explore the path of peace to the utmost, for at its end, whatever
disappointment I meet there, is the moral basis for laying down the olive branch
of peace and taking up the sword of war.
Like Lincoln, I understand that force may be necessary before mercy. Like
Lincoln, I don't relish it.
Many conditions imposed on the previous government that stole this debt
continue to be imposed on us who never benefited from it. And no assistance or
liberality commensurate with the calamity that has visited on us has been extended.
Yet ours must have been the cheapest revolution ever.
With little help from others, we Filipinos fulfilled the first and most difficult
condition of the debt negotiation: the full restoration of democracy and responsible
government.
When I met with President Reagan yesterday, we began an important
dialogue about cooperation and the strengthening of the friendship between our
two countries. That meeting was both a confirmation and a new beginning and I
am sure it will lead to positive results in all areas of common concern.
