3.1 CURRENT MARKET SCENARIO 12

• Hyperloop is expected to be the fifth mode of transport in future. At present, hyperloop is in development stage, and a number of companies have
started testing this technology. Through hyperloop technology, passengers can travel at a speed of 700 miles an hour in floating pods within low-
pressure tubes.

• As this technology is in development stage, supporters of this technology have said that this technology is expected to be cheaper and faster than train
and car travel, and cheaper and less polluting than air travel. This technology may take the pressure off gridlocked roads, making travel between cities
easier, and potentially unlocking major economic benefits as a result. Hyperloop is likely to be launched by 2022.

• The hyperloop services are expected to start from 2022, however, it's still not very clear where hyperloops will be actually established. But number of
companies, like Virgin Hyperloop One, Hyperloop Transport Technology (HTT), etc., have sketched out routes in the various region, such as the United
States, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East. Potential routes include New York to Washington DC, Pune to Mumbai, Kansas City to St Louis,
Bratislava to Brno, Vijaywada to Amaravati, and many more.

• Mr. Elon Musk, who is the founder of this technology, has come up with a estimated cost for the Los Angeles to San Francisco Hyperloop project. He
has estimated that the total cost for this project would be approximately between USD 6 billion – USD 7.5 billion. Musk has also came up with a USD
20 plus operating costs for a one-way ticket on the passenger hyperloop.

• Major percentage of the overall cost would be used in building the tube network: the overall cost of the tube, pillars, vacuum pumps, and stations was
calculated to be over USD 4 billion for the passenger version of hyperloop (USD 7bn for a slightly larger version that could also take freight). The cost
of a single capsules was estimated around USD 1.35 million, with 40 capsules needed for the service. These cost are less than 9% of the cost of the
proposed passenger only high-speed rail system.

4.1 DRIVERS 16

High Speed in Comparison to Other Modes of Transportation

• Hyperloop is a concept for very high-speed, fixed-guideway, intercity surface transportation, using capsule-like vehicles that operate in sealed partial-vacuum tubes.
However, hyperloop is at nascent stage, but investors, technology developing companies and government around the world are taking great interest in this technology.
• Hyperloop is the fifth mode of transpiration and it is the fastest of all. As Hyperloop’s proposed speeds (maximum 720-760 mph and average of 600 mph) would indeed be
faster than air, maglev, and High Speed Rail (HSR). However, all three modes would likely have stations that terminate at the outskirts of the major city and thus require
additional time on local transit for travelers to reach their final destination.
• The governments of developed and developing countries are testing the hyperloop transport technology in their counties and also has started building the tracks. For
instance;
4. MARKET DYNAMICS
 China has a project in Tongren, Guizhou province which will be the California-based company’s first track in China. The 50-50 joint venture between Hyperloop
Transportation Technologies (HTT) and government-owned Tongren Transportation Tourism Investment Group will cover 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) in its first
phase.
 Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), a company which is currently developing hyperloop technology has started building its first full-scale transportation
system in Toulouse, France. The company aims to develop a high speed, intercity transporter using a low-pressure tube train which travels in a vacuum at a speed
of about 760 miles per hour.
 The Indian government has inked an agreement with Virgin Hyperloop One Group, under this agreement the final route would be built within seven years, following
the successful completion of a test track.
• Because Hyperloop is an entirely new system that runs on neither roads nor rails, it may present novel issues related to the Federal role in ensuring safe operation. Due
to this move, the companies are investing more time and money on safety features of the transport. However the demand of fast transportation and growing technological
innovations in the transport field, the demand of hyperloop transportation is likely to grow rapidly.

4.1 DRIVERS 17

Increase in Environmental Concerns

• Countries, globally, have formulated stringent emission norms to reduce global warming. Efforts are being made by the governments worldwide to minimize the
adverse effects of global warming and reduce the carbon footprint.
• Penalties are imposed on manufacturers, who fail to meet their average targets. There is a penalty of USD 5.58 per vehicle for exceeding the first g/km limit, USD
16.73 for the second g/km, USD 27.88 for the third g/km, and USD 133.82 for each succeeding g/km. The European Union also introduced the Euro VI norms in 2014,
according to which nitrogen oxide emissions must be below 0.4 g/KWh and particulate emissions must be below 0.01g/KWh. Japan is in the process of introducing new
emission norms that are similar to the Euro VI standards. Similarly, developing countries, like India and Russia, were on the verge of applying Euro V norms by the end
of 2017, and Euro VI by 2021.
• Hyperloop transportation is one best efficient way to reduce the environmental concerns. The on-going research and studies done by environment experts suggests
that hyperloop transportation can help in reducing greenhouse gases rapidly: For instance :
 Researchers from Helmut Schmidt University, has estimated the effects of building a 300 km freight-dedicated Hyperloop in northern Germany. The usage of
hyperloop transportation would gradually reduce the number of trucks on roads, it will also help in reducing air pollution.
 The research has found that the usage of hyperloop technology is likely to reduce emission of carbon dioxide up to 140,000 metric ton every year.
• The growing environmental concerns and stringent emission norms are likely to drive the hyperloop technology market over the forecast period.

4.2 RESTRAINTS 18

High Associated Cost

• Hyperloop technology is fifth mode of transportation, and also the fastest mode of transportation. However, there is a huge restraint in making this concept a reality,
which is the high cost for building this technology.

• In 2012, Elon Musk introduced the idea of hyperloop transportation, with that he also estimated the route from Los Angeles to the Bay Area would cost approximately
USD 6 billion or nearly USD 12 million per mile. However, when different companies started working on this concept, they estimated the cost for the Bay Area project to
be somewhere around USD 9 – USD 13 billion, or USD 84 – USD 121 million per mile.

• The cost of overall hyperloop technology also varies from market to market. For starting any transport project, the overall cost of the project depends on number of
variables from location to location factors, such as land acquisition costs, the need to tunnel, and the number of stations along the route. This is the main reason due to
4. MARKET DYNAMICS
which the price for constructing the hyperloop would be varying from market to market. For instance;

 Hyperloop One has started making a route between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, initially the company announced USD 50 million per mile. However, the company
again analyzed the project cost and estimated that it will cost approximately USD 52 million per mile and nearly around USD 5 billion for the overall route. This
shows that there is a huge difference in the cost of Los Angeles-Bay Area project and Abu Dhabi-Dubai project.

• Undertaking a project like the proposed Hyperloop can be a large financial burden. Musk estimates the cost for Los Angeles to the Bay Area project to be in between
USD 6 billion and USD 7.5 billion. The cost which he estimated for the whole project is actually applicable for two one way tubes and 40 capsules with no cargo space,
while the higher end of the estimate would carry cargo. The overall cost for making a hyperloop technology is not very clear but certainly it is likely to be high than the
proposed once, and this factor is anticipated to hinder the growth of the market studied over the forecast period.

4.3 OPPORTUNITIES 19

Advancement In Transportation Technology

• Hyperloop is a high-speed train system invented by Tesla’s Elon Musk. It is the fastest mode of transportation for both passenger and cargo. It will contain two massive
tubes. Pods carrying passengers would travel through the tubes at speeds topping out over 700 mph.

• Hyperloop pods will be faster than trains, safer than four wheelers and much less damaging to the environment than any other mode of transportation. With the focus
on changing the world’s energy systems, hyperloop fits in with Musk’s aim to shift transport away from carbon to renewables.

• According to the estimations of the US Department of Transportation (DOT), hyperloop routes are expected to be six times more energy efficient than air travel on short
routes, and three times faster than the world’s fastest high-speed rail system.

• Hyperloop offers a significant opportunity for industry transformation. Hyperloop has a potential for speedier deliveries than short haul flights and regular rail and road
freight options. Virgin hyperloop estimates that a ticket for a journey between Los Angeles and San Francisco may cost nearly USD 30. This ticket rate is expected to
help the company to pay back its initial costs in just eight years.

• In the coming years, the advancement in hyperloop technology is likely to pickup the pace, as more companies are working or are planning to work in this market.
Thus, the market studied is likely to open new opportunities in the future.

5.1.1 CAPSULE 23

• The capsule segment of the market studied is expected to be valued at USD 397.00 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 2,944.34 million by 2030,
projecting a CAGR of 24.53% over the forecast period.

• Capsules are also popularly known as pods, main component of the hyperloop transportation, where passengers/cargo carriers traverse within the evacuated tube
at high speeds.

• Capsules are supported by air bearings that operate using pressurized/compressed air reservoir and aerodynamic lift. The capsules are accelerated via a magnetic
linear accelerator affixed at various stations on the low pressure tube with rotors contained in each capsule.

• Capsules are being designed based on carrier types (transportation of only passenger or only cargo/goods or passenger plus cargo/goods). The hyperloop capsule
has seen significant developments from the manufacturers during 2017-2018. For instances,

 In October 2018, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), a US-based company, has unveiled its full-scale passenger transportation capsule
at Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain,.

 The HyperloopTT’s passenger capsule of 32-metre length named as Quintero One, is delivered to HyperloopTT's R&D center in Toulouse, France, for
additional assembly and integration into the system before it is used on one of the first commercial tracks.

 In 2019, the Quintero One capsule will be fully optimized and ready for passengers. The 5 metric ton capsule travels at 1,000 kilometers per
hour (620mph) with a capacity of carrying 30 to 40 passengers at a time. It has 72 sensors, 75,000 rivets, and 7,200 square meters of fiber. The
capsule is constructed of HyperloopTT's Vibranium, a specially made dual-layer smart composite material.

 In August 2017, Virgin’s Hyperloop One has carried out its first successful test run of a full-scale Hyperloop passenger pod XP-1, at its 500 meter DevLoop
test site in Nevada, reaching speeds of up to 192 mph (309km/h) initially. However, in the latest test records, the company achieved a record speed of 240
mph (387 km/hr).

5.1.1 CAPSULE 24

 The XP-1 pad has been developed under the collaboration between Virgin's Hyperloop One and Dubai’s Road Transport Authority (RTA), as part of UAE
Innovation Month. The 8.7 meter long and 3.3 meter diameter pod can accommodate 10 people at a time, and travels between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just
12 minutes. However, with on-going improvements and developments of their pods, the company plans to provide the pods in two classes, where gold class
will seat 5 passengers, while silver class will seat 14 passengers. The company is expected to launch these pods commercially in 2020.

• Additionally, the above-mentioned companies as well as other companies, like Transpod Inc., AECOM, etc. are primarily focusing to develop an optimized
passenger plus cargo pod. Thus, during the forecast period, the companies are likely to continue to invest on developing and introducing new pods to sustain the
growing competition and demand for the hyperloop technology in the market.

5.1.2 TUBE 25

• The tube segment of the market studied is expected to be valued at USD 978.20 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 6,592.89 million by 2030,
projecting a CAGR of 22.87% over the forecast period.

• Tube is a tunnel or an encapsulated pathway or a track, where hyperloop pod travels. Tube is contained with near vacuum pressure to reduce the air drag on
capsule motion. The near vacuum atmosphere in tube is controlled by installing vacuum/pressure/evacuating pumps at regular intervals along the tube length and
maintain a pressure around 5 to 6 pounds per square inch.

• Currently, these tubes are made of steel. Hyperloop tubes would be either constructed above or below the ground, occupying a smaller area than a traditional rail or
road. Above the ground tubes are supported by pylons, and each tube is welded or bolted together in a side by side configuration, and allows the capsule/pod to
travel both directions. So far the constructed hyperloop tubes are above the ground due to following benefits.

 Tube erection on pillars above the ground provided benefits of saving money; provision of protection from earthquakes, snowfall and rainfall; and allowed the
installation of solar panels on top of the tube.

 The energy obtained from these solar panels are used to satisfy the operational need of the Hyperloop, as power generated through the solar panels is much
more than power consumed by propulsion and evacuating pumps. Additionally, the solar energy can be stored in battery packs for operation during cloudy
and rainy conditions, and during nights.

• Presently, there are two hyperloop test tracks operating across the world. These two test track are located in the United States.

 One is Elon Musk’s track located outside SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California, while other one is Virgin’s Hyperloop One’s test track located in
the desert north of Las Vegas.

• However, in 2018, the third hyperloop test track has been noticed under construction. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) has started assembling
its tubes for constructing a 1-kilometer-long test track near its R&D center in France.

5.1.2 TUBE 26

 HyperloopTT’s test track has been planned to be built in two phases: In 2018, the company started operating a closed 320-meter system. In 2019, the
company expects to complete a 1-kilometer full-scale track system elevated by pylons at a 5.8 meter height, to test the full-scale passenger capsule
(developed by the company in 2018 at its Spain facility).

• Owing to the growing investment plans to launch hyperloop technology commercially across various regions, like Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East,
are anticipated to draw huge demand for hyperloop tube construction during the forecast period. Additionally, the construction of hyperloop tubes is likely to attract
many investors and transportation policy regulators during the forecast period, owing to its following benefits

 The tubes can be built with 1/10th the cost of high speed rail track, or 1/4th the cost of a freeway.

 Employing evacuated tubes makes hyperloop 50 times more efficient than electric cars or trains.

5.1.3 PROPULSION SYSTEM 27

• The propulsion system segment of the market studied is expected to be valued at USD 153.53 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 884.46 million by 2030,
projecting a CAGR of 20.09% over the forecast period.

• The propulsion system is a critical component of the hyperloop technology. For achieving a high speed hyperloop, a high velocity accelerator is needed for the
capsule/pod to launch from its station.

• There are few methods that have been suggested by the market players/developers and researchers for the implementation of the hyperloop propulsion systems,
namely coil gun, linear induction motors (LIM), cold gas propulsion system, etc. For instance,

 Switerzerland’s Swissloop team, sponsored by Amplexor company, has been a fierce contender in SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition events. In 2017,
Swissloop’s developed Escher pod for 2017 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition, and demonstrated its superiority, as the only team to employ a cold gas
propulsion system (similar to the ones used in rockets) and an aerodynamic carbon fiber hull. Swissloop team is recognized for its propulsion system and
certified by SpaceX.

• Linear induction motor has been widely adopted by the market giants, namely Telsa’s Hyperloop, Virgin Hyperloop One, Transpod Inc., etc., due to its following benefits.

 Linear induction motor is less expensive than coil gun propulsion system, even though the later system provides high speeds compared to that of the former
system.

 Linear induction motor provides a safer and feasible option for hyperloop propulsion system, due to its simple construction design and cost effective nature.

 Taking an example of Telsa’s Hyperloop propulsion system, the 0.5 m-wide and 10 cm-high stators provided along 4km sections of the tube is long enough
to accelerate and decelerate the capsule between 480 and 1,220 km/h and to accelerate at 1g. These stators are installed near stations and at booster
points about 110 km apart along the line. Only about 1% of the tube’s length has been fitted with stators. 15m-long aluminum blades are the rotors of the
LIM integrated capsules, each one having 0.45 m height and 50 mm thickness. The current mainly flows in the outer 10mm of the blade, thus, the blade is
made hollow to cut its weight and costs. The gap between the rotor and the stator mounted on the bottom of the tube would be 20mm on each side.

5.1.3 PROPULSION SYSTEM 28

• During the forecast period, the adoption of linear induction motor for hyperloop propulsion system is likely to continue to grow among hyperloop developers, owing
to its low cost. The LIM system requires installation only for 1% of the tube length, which would contribute to a high cost savings while developing long mile
hyperloop paths.

5.1.4 OTHERS 29

• The others segment of the market studied is expected to be valued at USD 341.28 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 2,452.54 million by 2030,
projecting a CAGR of 24.10% over the forecast period.

• Other components of hyperloop technology includes vacuum pumps, solar panels, suspension and air bearings, power electronics (inverters), batteries, compressor
fans, and pylon.

• Vacuum pumps are one of the essential components of hyperloop system, they are installed at regular intervals with associated sensors to maintain the near
vacuum pressure inside the tube.

• The installation of the solar panels on the hyperloop tube has impacted positively, and reduced the need to carry bulky batteries in capsules. This will also decrease
the power consumption from electricity grid, as the power generated by the solar panels is much sufficient to satisfy the power consumption of the propulsion
system.

 Majority of the hyperloop tracks have been built above the ground, these above ground hyperloops will continue to cover the major share in the global
hyperloop system market.

 Companies, like Hyperloop one, Hyperloop TT, etc. have already started developing hyperloop system by installing solar panels.

• Inverters helps to operate linear induction motors at nearly constant phase voltage.

 Accelerators at each terminal will employ two inverters, one to accelerate outgoing capsules and the other to capture energy from incoming capsules as they
slow down, allowing for regenerative braking. The inverters will power only those sections of the track occupied by the capsule, hence, improving the power
factor.

 Elon Musk’s Hyperloop system uses 65MVA inverters.

• Compressor fans, pylon, and batteries are critical components of hyperloop, and have contributed to more than 50% of the cost of the other segment components.
Thus, the efficiency and reliability of the above products are very essential for the hyperloop companies.

5.2.1 PASSENGER 33

• The passenger hyperloop segment in the global market is expected to be valued at USD 845.43 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 5,808.85 million by
2030, registering a CAGR of 23.20% over the forecast period.

• The hyperloop technology is expected to provide very high speed in transportation, faster than the existing forms of passenger travel. Further, it is likely to able to
provide the service at a lower cost than high speed rail (HSR). For a trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles covering roughly 400 miles, the resulting time
savings over air or maglev would be about 45 minutes.

• The time savings over HSR is more substantial (2 hours), however, HSR stations are generally found downtown, which provides savings in access and egress time.
It is not clear whether hyperloop’s very high speeds would be comfortable for passengers. Because it is a fixed guideway, and the route needs to be planned with
exacting precision, so that the passengers are not subjected to uncomfortable g-forces on curves or dips.

• In contrast, passengers find maglev and HSR trains very comfortable and appreciate being able to use their time productively. Proponents claim that because the
system is enclosed in a tube, it would be impervious to weather delays.

• However, maglev is also resilient to weather, as the train is elevated above the guideway and can operate in bad weather. HSR, while not impervious to bad
weather, is considerably more resilient than air transport.

• As originally described, hyperloop capacity would be far lower than HSR. However, that capacity may potentially be increased by using larger pods or by having
more tubes stacked on a single pylon structure.

• Hyperloop appears to be able to offer faster speeds than other modes of passenger transport, however, other modes offer advantages in other dimensions, such as
proximity to downtown areas, and/or passenger comfort.

• Much of the public is not aware of the higher speeds offered by maglev technology, likely because it has only been deployed in one instance, in Shanghai, China.
However, that one deployment has shown that it is feasible, and thus, it would be a less risky investment than the entirely unproven hyperloop technology.

5.2.2 CARGO 35

• The cargo hyperloop segment in the global market is expected to be valued at USD 1,024.57 million in 2022, and is anticipated to reach USD 7,065.38 million by
2030

• Cargo hyperloop is likely to attract a significant market share, owing to the growing e-commerce and logistics sectors across the world.

• The hyperloop companies, like Virgin Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), have been equally focusing to develop an
optimized hyperloop cargo capsule, to meet the growing demand for fast delivery services of goods.

• In the coming five years, faster adoption of hyperloop cargo technology is expected to be more in Europe, compared to other regions, like North America, Asia-
Pacific, and Middle East.

 As European countries like Germany and United Kingdom have proposed for cargo hyperloop projects at port facility and retail sector respectively, in 2019.
These cargo hyperloop projects are likely to start by 2020 or 2021.

• However, other regions, like Middle East has also started working on promoting and developing cargo hyperloop technology in their logistics and e-commerce
business. For instance,

 Virgin Hyperloop One, the US-Based startup, and Emirati supply chain firm DP World in Dubai, collaborated in 2018, to change and improve the freight
business by using hyperloop technology for land cargo transportation.

 The joint venture (named as DP World Cargospeed) of both the companies aims at delivering the freight at a speed of 600mph and close to the cost of
trucking. Additionally, the company believes that the cost of delivery through hyperloop would be five times cheaper than air freight.

 The venture aims to launch the operational system in service in Dubai by 2021.

• Growing e-commerce and logistics businesses, fast freight delivery services, and ban practices on diesel heavy commercial vehicles in certain regions of the world
are some of the major factors that are likely to drive the growth of cargo hyperloop technology, projecting a CAGR of 23.29%, during the forecast period.

6.1.1 UNITED STATES 40

• Hyperloops are no longer quite so hypothetical and a handful of firms are now competing against each other to develop the necessary technology to realize it.

• In addition to designing the magnetically levitated pods and testing them on small-scale tracks, the firms are taking preliminary steps to set up hyperloop routes in the
United States.

• In 2018, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies started working with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Northern Ohio Coordinating Committee to
commence regional feasibility studies.

 The company will be submitting a proposal that would allow this magnetic system to transport people and goods from Cleveland to Chicago in 20 minutes.

• The hyperloop technology market in the United Sates is expected to be operative by 2020.

 The first hyperloop lines are anticipated to be opened between San Francisco and Los Angeles, in 2020.

 Additionally, Virgin Hyperloop One has already started working demon in Nevada and claims that it will built its first passenger hyperloop by the mid 2020, as
the first feasibility study has been completed and confirming the Missouri hyperloop route is viable.

 The Missouri route runs along Interstate 70 (I-70) from Kansas City to St. Louis with a stop in Columbia, Missouri, along the way. The transit time
between two ends will be approximately 30 minutes covering roughly 250 miles.

 The initial cost estimate for constructing the I-70 hyperloop route will be around USD 30-40 million per mile of track. With a route of approximately
250 miles, that equals a total price of arounds USD 7-10 billion, though both the price per mile and total length of the route could be later
adjusted.

• One of the biggest players in the market is Tesla, which, along with its partner Boring Company, is planning to dig a hyperloop tunnel that would make possible the
transport from Washington, D.C. to New York City in half an hour (the fastest Amtrak trains make the trip in just under three hours), in the coming years.

 Meanwhile, in October 2018, Musk announced that the Boring Company – which was founded to develop more effective tunneling technology for a venture
into underground hyperloops – has almost completed a 2-mile (3.2km) test track beneath Los Angeles. It was opened for free rides for public, the very next
day after its opening on December 18th, 2018. The rapid transit tunnel has been disclosed by the company due to objections from residents. Thus, the
company shifted its focus more on hyperloop technology.

• So far, a dozens of possible hyperloop routes have been proposed across the United States including connections between Los Angles and San Franscisco; New
York City and Washington, D.C; Denver and Houston. Further feasibility studies have been geared to release for the states like Ohio, Colorado and Texas in 2019.
Owing to the above trends, the United States continues to see a potential growth for hyperloop technology during the forecast period.

6.1.2 CANADA 42

• Currently, hyperloop technology is lacking support from the Canadian government, and thus, Canadian hyperloop companies have started focusing on other regions
like Europe, to expand their businesses. For instance,

 Transpod Inc., a Canadian company founded in 2015, which designs and manufactures ultra-high-speed transportation technology and vehicles, proposed a
10 km-hyperloop track along Highway 7 in Albert. However, the company is still waiting for provincial support.

 With the support from the province, the company anticipates to ready the hyperloop track by 2022, if the construction begins in 2020, and form a
section of the eventual transportation corridors, which would be privately owned like Canadian pension funds, by construction firms and other investors.

• The growing commitment to reducing emissions and investing in new green transport modes have become major concerns in Canada, over the past two years.
Nearly 70% of the Quebec and Ontario energy today is produced by renewable energy, mostly hydro power. This energy generation is likely to drive the country to
focus on energy efficient transportation systems. Hyperloop can be powered by hydro or other renewables and would be 100% emissions-free, a strong draw for
transportation and urban planners.

• In 2017, Hyperloop One Global Challenge event conducted by Virgin Group listed Canada Toronto-Montreal route as one of the global challenges, where optimized
transportation system is needed for the rapidly growing passenger transportation.

• With a hyperloop in the Toronto-Montreal route, the travel time between Toronto and Ottawa could be reduced to 27 minutes, Montreal to Ottawa to 12
minutes, and Toronto to Montreal to 39 minutes.

• Unlike air transport or even high-speed rail, hyperloop offers travel from city-center to city-center, and enables direct, on-demand connections between the
cities. The hyperloop will position the region as a rival to major North American metropolitan areas, to attract visitors, workers, businesses, and investments,
which will ultimately increase its competitive advantage in the global economy.

• In 2016, the Canadian administration created an infrastructure bank and pledged CAD 81.2 billion (USD 60.8 billion) in spending over the coming 12 years. These
funds have been earmarked for public transit, trade, and transportation corridors, and green infrastructure improvements.

6.1.2 CANADA 43

• However, the Toronto-Montreal corridor is currently facing challenges in acquiring land rights in a highly urbanized area, to build dedicated rail lines and
electrify commuter rail.

• Hyperloop will be the best solution to tackle the above-mentioned issues, as it requires a much narrower footprint; and with speeds two to three times faster than
high-speed rail and five to ten times faster than conventional rail, it would offer a cheaper, faster, greener alternative to high-speed rail.

• Reducing transit time between Montreal and Toronto to 39 minutes will relieve highway and airport congestion. The line would cost USD 15 billion, excluding
land prices, and accommodate 12 million passengers, annually.

• Moreover, hyperloop systems will create jobs and open up new economic opportunities within Canada in the manufacturing, construction, and services sectors.

• Owing to the benefits of hyperloop technology, the government of Canada has started closely monitoring the international commercialization of hyperloop technology.
In its Transportation 2030 initiative, the country plans to modernize Canada's transportation sector through updated regulations, investments in infrastructure, and the
promotion of new transportation technologies.

• As part of the initiative, in 2018, a second USD 6 billion line was proposed to connect Calgary and Edmonton in about 30 minutes .

• According to the industry experts, the country is likely to be ready to carry passengers in hyperloop systems by the early 2030s, after them being first tested and used
for transport of light freight, such as e-commerce and perishable food.

6.2.1 GERMANY 45

• Germany is one of the leading countries in Europe that has been significantly contributing above 20% in the European’s economy value. However, the country has
noticed a decline in its year-on-year GDP growth rate from 2.46% in 2017 to 1.57% in 2018, majorly owing to its global trade disputes and issues in the automotive
industry, which in turn, led to low vehicle production in the country.
• With increasing concerns on rising air and noise pollutions, greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, and road accidents, in 2018, the country took an initiative
to ban trucks and older diesel cars in certain cities, like Hamburg.
• E-commerce and logistics have been the fast growing sectors in Germany, and are likely to be affected by the aforementioned ban practices on vehicles. Thus, the
country needs to quickly adopt to other means of transportation, primarily for cargo/freight business, in order to continue maintaining its high economy value in the
world.
• Analyzing the above situation, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) set up plans to expand its hyperloop technology in the country and signed a
deal with the authorities of the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (HHLA), Germany’s biggest port in the city of Hamburg.
 The deal is to build a 328-foot (100-meter) test track of cargo hyperloop, connecting the port with a container yard that is away from the port, and allow the
port to significantly increase the amount of cargo that it can handle.
 The hyperloop project is estimated to cost USD 7 million, which the HyperloopTT and HHLA companies, are expected to split equally. The amount also
includes funds for feasibility study.
 HyperloopTT plans to begin the construction of a testing terminal of about 100 meters soon, and anticipates to complete the test track by 2021. The hyperloop
track is likely to be tested using special freight capsule/pod and loading dock. As the hyperloop system develops, both companies plan to market it to other
ports and logistics companies.
• Owing to the above trends, the demand for hyperloop in Germany is likely to increase faster in the cargo/freight transportation segment, when compared to that in
the passenger segment, during the forecast period.
• The local players in hyperloop technology in the country have also been consistently showing improvements in various aspects of hyperloop’s design, speed etc,

 The WARR Hyperloop team from the Technical University of MunichTechnical University of Munich broke the previous record, when its capsule hit 467km/h
at the Hyperloop Pod Competition 2018 in California, United States, conducted by Elon Musk’s partner SpaceX.

 The previous record for a hyperloop pod was 387km/h, set by Virgin Hyperloop One at its 500-metre DevLoop test track near Las Vegas in December
2017.

 The WARR Hyperloop team focused on reducing the weight, while increasing drive performance. The team built the shell from lightweight carbon
fiber-reinforced composite materials and designed a more aerodynamic shape. Additionally, they replaced the 50 kilo-watt motor in the previous model
with eight smaller motors.

• The above developments by local hyperloop developer/players are likely to give a tough competition to the market giants, like Hyperloop One and HyperloopTT in
the country in the coming years.

6.2.2 UNITED KINGDOM 47

• The United Kingdom shows a tremendous potential for the implementation of hyperloop system, as the country’s current transportation systems are operating
beyond the capacity. This is because of London being a congested city, with over one million people travelling across central London each working day, increasing its
daytime population six times.

• To tackle the increasing passenger transportation and to address the economic inequalities in South and North of the country, Virgin Hyperloop One selected two UK
routes as winners for its Hyperloop One Global Challenge in 2017. The two UK routes proposed were as follows:

 The ‘North-South Connector’, which would provide transportation facility through London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Edinburgh, forming a major route in a
national hyperloop network. The proposal highlighted that by connecting metro areas across the northern United Kingdom, the North-South Connector would
stimulate growth and bring the much needed economic balance to the country.

 The other route, named ‘Northern Arc’, would connect Glasgow to Liverpool in under an hour, with stops in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, and Manchester.
The proposal aims to bridge the gap between the M62 Corridor and the Scottish Central Belt, with Newcastle as the central point. The corridor may effectively
create a new mega region, with over a million people, competing globally, with the London metro area.

• Additionally, the country’s e-commerce and logistics sectors are likely to see a change in its operations with the adoption of hyperloop technology in the next three
years. Further, the country already noticed the funding support to hyperloop technology from investors in 2018. For instance,

 The UK-based company Magway, manufacturers the motors required to push the train forward. It has won co-funding support of more than GBP 650,000 from
Innovate UK, the UK government’s research agency, to build a 150 m hyperloop-type demonstration link, for high-speed package delivery east of London,
through Magway’s emerging and enabling technologies competition.

 Magway is currently building two hyperloop projects, which are not expected to operate with vacuum, and would transfer only cargo/parcels.

 One is a small, privately-funded 12m demonstrator line at the company’s test facility in Wembley.

 The second project being Innovate UK’s 150 m demonstration line.

 Additionally, in the long-term, Magway plans to install a line along a 35 km route from Hatfield, north of London, to Old Oak and Park Royal, near Wembley,
together with a consortium of commercial and government partner organizations.

 The above links are expected to have the capacity to transport more than 600 million parcels over a year.

 Through Magway’s expertise in the non-vacuum hyperloop technology, the company estimates the cost of the installation of such hyperloop system to be less
than GBP 1 million per kilometre.

6.2.3 REST OF EUROPE 49

• The Netherlands became the first European country to test hyperloop technology in June 2017, with the opening of a short full-scale hyperloop test tube (30 meters
in length, with a 3.2 meter diameter), installed at the Green village at Delft University of Technology, and built by Delft Hyperloop spinoff Hardt, with financing from
various partners, such as the publicly owned Dutch Railway Company NS.
• The hyperloop technology market in the Netherlands displays a great potential, as it is supported by both private and public sectors, providing a positive picture of
the societal and economic value of a test track, by proposing the construction of a track with a total length of five kilometers.
 Two hyperloop companies – Hardt from Delft and Hyperloop One from the United States – have indicated that they are looking for a location to field-test the
hyperloop concept and have it certified for passenger and freight transport. Viewing these plans, the Infrastructure and Environment Minister Schultz van
Haegen has commissioned a study to find out whether and why the construction of a test track may be worthwhile for the Netherlands.
• In June 2018, the Canadian and European hyperloop companies formed an international partnership to define, establish, and standardize the methodology and
framework for regulating vacuum-based hyperloop travel systems in Europe.
 As per the announcement, the partnership comprises TransPod from Canada (with offices in Italy and France), Hardt Hyperloop from the Netherlands, Zeleros
Hyperloop from Spain, and Hyper Poland.
 In addition, a European hyperloop program has been initiated by Hardt technology, where the hyperloop companies and co-developing partners collaborate in
a common standardization roadmap, to bring down the costs of hyperloop through R&D, and to test and showcase the developed technologies to allow
commercialization. The program will span several institutes and R&D centers in Europe, and it is supported by a combination of industrial partners, research
institutes, and public bodies.
 In the above program, European countries like the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, and Poland are collectively planning to build new
technologies in the green transport research, development, and innovation sector under a project named Greenfield, which is expected to start by
December 2019, with an estimated project cost of around EUR 150 million, funded and supported by several partners from public and private sectors
across the above-mentioned European countries. The project is estimated to create about 400 jobs in the region.

6.2.3 REST OF EUROPE 50

• After the announcement of Virgin Hyperloop One’s plans to launch a 760mph hyeprloop for cities in Europe, architects and engineers have proposed a hyperloop
route that stretches 280 miles (450km) from Amsterdam to Frankfurt (i.e. from Schiphol Airport to the German city), which will allow passengers to travel between
the two places in just 50 minutes.

 To support and develop the hyperloop proposal, Hardt collaborated with the Royal Schiphol Group and partnered with the architecture firm UNStudio to
reveal images of what the system might look like, in September 2018.

• The above-mentioned on-going and upcoming hyperloop project proposals across the European countries, which are to be realized during the forecasted period,
are likely to result in huge investments and collaborations between hyperloop companies and investors from both public and private sectors in Europe.

6.3.1 CHINA 52

• China is one of the fastest growing country in the world. The vehicle sales in china is increasing due to which the traffic problems are also increasing in the country.
China’s largest cities are choking in traffic. Millions of cars runs on the road the levels of air pollution and astronomical commute times rapidly increases, especially
during rush hours.

• China is expanding its transportation network rapidly and trying to bring down the costs related to freight hauling. Being a developing country, China spends about 15%
of its GDP on logistics, which makes it incompetent compared to the West, where the average stands at around 10%-12% of the GDP. Hyperloop technology can
transport goods at a fraction of the time taken by conventional road or rail transport.

• To address the traffic problems, Chinese state-backed companies are making heavy investments in the US hyperloop startups, like Arrivo and Hyperloop
Transportation Technologies.

 Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) signed a deal with the province of Guizhou to construct the china’s first hyperloop track. The company will be
providing technology, engineering expertise, and essential equipment. Tongren will be responsible for certification, regulatory framework, and construction of the
system. The company is going to build a new 10-kilometre (six-mile) test track for its high speed hyperloop transportation system.

 China has also inked a hyperloop deal with another US startup Arrivo. This startup focuses on pseudo-Hyperloops. These loops use maglev "sleds" to transport
cars from place to place, rather than the vacuum-sealed tubes available in any ordinary Hyperloops. Under this deal China is offering the startup USD 1 billion
in credit for global projects, as a result, Arrivo does not necessarily have to construct anything in the country. However, at present the timeline and location for
project is not fixed.

• The growing initiative of the Chinese government and entrance of foreign player in the market studied are fueling the market for hyperloop in the country. Thus, the
market studied is anticipated to grow over the forecast period.

6.3.2 INDIA 53

• India’s current transportation infrastructure is falling short, due to rapid urbanization. Understandably, India needs something major to fix the gap, and as a solution,
the government is trying to implement the 5th mode of transport, which is Hyperloop technology.

• India is inviting foreign companies to come to India, and make hyperloop technology into realty. For instance;

 Hyperloop Transportation Technology (HTT) signed a deal with the state of Andhra Pradesh, in southeast India. Working with the Andhra Pradesh Economic
Development Board, the company is expected to spend six months studying the possible routes for a hyperloop, connecting the cities of Vijayawada and
Amravati.

 The entire Vijayawada and Amravati hyperloop project is conceived to be implemented in three phases. Where, in phase 1 and phase 2, a commercial
hyperloop system between Amravati and Vijayawada is likely to be built. In the phase 3, the project is also expected to be covering, either the northern or
southern section of the vision corridor, connecting Anantapur-Amravati-Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is expected to be built.

 The Maharashtra government has given green signal to the Pune-Mumbai hyperloop project as a ‘Public Infrastructure Project’. This project is a joint venture
between the state government and Virgin Hyperloop One (Hyperloop One) company, and aims to build a high-tech transport system, which is expected to
connect Pune and Mumbai. The project is also likely to reduce the time taken to travel between the two cities to 25 minutes. At present, it takes around three
hours to travel the approximately 150 km distance.

 Virgin Hyperloop One is expected to make a 100% investment in the project, and the Maharashtra government would be providing the land for the project. It
is estimated that the cost for an effective demonstration of the track would be nearly INR 3,000 crore (approximately USD 425 million). Additionally, the cost of
this project may increase further, however, the cost per kilometer is likely to be about the same as the overhead metro, which is approximately USD 15-25
million per km. The route is expected to be finalized soon after a team from Virgin Hyperloop One visits Pune.

• The government of India is taking significant interest in the hyperloop technology and is allowing foreign companies to enter the Indian market. It is anticipated that
the project would start from the beginning of 2019 and be completed by 2022-2023.

6.3.3 REST OF ASIA-PACIFIC 54

• Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, as the countries, like China, India, and Japan, are growing rapidly. The demand for hyperloop technology
is increasing in the other countries of Asia-Pacific, like Australia and South Korea.

• Australia has the potential to turn hyperloop technology into reality, and hyperloop technology companies are also planning to begin hyperloop transportation projects
in the country. For instance;

 Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) made a submission to a government inquiry, asking it to consider the benefits of the high-speed technology. The
company wants to build the hyperloop track between Sydney and Melbourne. If this mode of transportation turns into reality, then the distance between Sydney
and Melbourne can be covered in 40 minutes.

 The company suggests that the system would use less electricity than a conventional maglev system and renewable energy may also be used to power it,
reducing its costs.

• Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has inked its first commercial deal with South Korea, making it potentially one of the first countries to get the futuristic system.
According to the agreement, South Korea's government team who are responsible of technological innovation and infrastructure, which are Korea Institute of Civil
Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), and Hanyang University has agreed to use HTT's technology in the country. In 2017, the government of South Korea has
entered into a agreement with HTT to build a system between Seoul and the southern city of Busan.

• This agreement includes licensing and research development of the tube infrastructure and safety platform, gives a full-length test track, along with the access to
HTT's levitation, propulsion, and battery technology, and passenger experience designs.

• According to the above facts and statements, it can be anticipated that the demand for hyperloop technology over the forecast period is likely to increase, as the other
countries of the Asia-Pacific region are trying to bring technology to their respective countries.

6.4.1 MEXICO 56

• The demand for hyperloop in Mexico is increasing, as it is trying to develop the hyperloop technology within the country.

• A team led by Fernando Romero's Mexican studio FR-EE won a competition to design a hyperloop high-speed transport line, which is likely to link urban areas from
Mexico City to Guadalajara.

• Mexico is going to name the technology as “Mexloop”. Mexloop is a collaboration between the representatives from Romero’s firm FR-EE and the engineering firms,
Arup and Sener. FR-EE was named the winner of the Hyperloop One Global, and is now work expected to work with Hyperloop One to develop the network in the
country.

• The proposed hyperloop route would connect Mexico City to Guadalajara via Querétaro and León. This route is expected to serve more than 60 million people by
2050. Stations would be strategically located near airports, rail freight hubs, and metro and commuter rail stations, in order to maximize the efficiency of existing
transport infrastructure.

• Hyperloop One Mexico arises as a scheme from the private initiative, different from what the Mexican federal government proposed as the Mexico-Querétaro High-
Speed Train. The latter raised public investment and linked the country's capital with Queretaro. As the investment is increasing, and the government of Mexico is
supporting the hyperloop project, and considering the aforementioned factors, it is anticipated that the demand for hyperloop technology is likely to increase over the
forecast period.

FUTURE OF THE MARKET 59

• Hyperloop is at nascent stage, but investors, technology developing companies, and governments across the world are taking great interest in this
technology.
• From past decades, innovation in the transportation technology has been limited to improving or modifying traditional means, resulting in stagnant
growth in transport technology.
 And hyperloop has the potential to break this slump and provide a very fast and cheap method of transportation.
• The hyperloop technology is in its elementary stage. Even if the technology is successful, it can be worked upon for improvement in the future.
• A detailed design for the stations, including loading-unloading of passengers, improved safety features, and propulsion of the capsule, has a large
scope toward developing hyperloop.
4. MARKET DYNAMICS
• However, the technology faces numerous challenges, such as heavy investment, high electricity consumption, chances of accidents (due to
malfunctioning of the automated system) resulting in high risk to life, and environmental damage.
 Apart from the aforementioned challenges, other factors are limited technical capabilities, land usage rights, high speed of capsule may cause
dizziness to the passengers, and adaptability to topography, such as sharp turns and change in altitudes.
• Hyperloop technology may also give challenge to the airline industry in the future.
 For instance, according to International Airport Review, San Francisco International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport route, caters to
more than 2.2 million annual passengers paying an average base fare of about USD 112 each.
 If a hyperloop transportation is launched between two cities, it would pose a potential yearly loss of nearly USD 250 million to the airline industry
in airfares alone, without taking into account the possibility of substantial losses in ancillary revenue.
 Additionally, if a long distance hyperloop between New York’s John. F. Kennedy Airport to Los Angeles International Airport is launched, then the
annual potential loss to the airline industry is likely to be more than ~USD 1 billion (2.87 million passengers paying an average of ~USD 338 per
person annually).

9.1 HYPERLOOP TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGIES - OVERVIEW 63

• Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), is a US based research company

• The company is formed using a crowd collaboration approach (a mix of team collaboration and crowdsourcing), in order
to develop a transportation system based on the Hyperloop concept.
• HTT's technology breakthrough is a next-generation passive magnetic levitation system, called Inductrack. Magnets
arranged in a Halbach array configuration enable passive levitation over an unpowered but conductive track. HTT
tested its prototype, and improved the technology and optimized it for a low pressure environment.
• HTT has developed a new skin material for capsule safety, called Vibranium, using carbon-fiber and embedded
sensors. The new smart material is eight times stronger than aluminum and ten times stronger than steel alternatives.
Founded in 2013
Vibranium is also much lighter in weight i.e., roughly five times less than steel and 1.5 times less than aluminum,
reducing the energy output to propel the capsule. Culver City, California, United States HQ
• HTT's system was deemed "feasible and insurable" by the world's largest reinsurance company, Munich RE.
