Assignment 1: for discussion in Week

2 tutorials
Assignment numbers are the ones as provided in the lecture notes.
Exercise 2.1.20: Sketch the curves defined by the following paths:
(1) r : R → R3 , r(t) = (2t − 1, t, t + 3).
(2) r : [0, 1] → R2 , r(t) = (t, et ). What is the relation between this
path and the path c : [0, 1] → R2 , c(s) = (1 − s, e1−s )?
(3) r : R → R2 , r(t) = (sinh t, cosh t).
(4) r : R → R3 , r(t) = (sin t, cos t, cos t).

Exercise 2.2.6: For each of the follow vector valued functions r(t)
please (a) sketch the curve, (b) calculate r0 (t) and (c) indicate r0 (1) on
your graph.
(1) r(t) = cosh ti + sinh tj;
(2) r(t) = 3i + 5tj − tk;
(3) r(t) = cos 2πti + sin 2πtj + tk.

Exercise 2.3.3: Sketch the curves defined by the following paths.

(1) r(t) : [−π/4, π/4] → R2 , r(t) = (t, tan t). How does this path
compare to the path c : [0, π/2] → R2 , c(s) = (π/4−s, tan(π/4−
s))?
(2) r(t) : R → R3 , r(t) = (sin t, 5 cos t, cos 2t).

Exercise 2.3.4: Compute r0 (0) for each of the paths in exercise

2.3.3. Write down a parametrization of the tangent line fo the curve
at r(0).
Important! Appendix A: Revise some of the linear algebra in
appendix A of the lecture notes/workbook. Also, please do exercises
A.3.1 and A.3.2.
