Job Shadowing – Activity for students

A job shadow is a learning experience that takes place at a business or organization in your
community.

Job shadows give you a chance to:

Ø Begin to identify career interests by observing the daily routine of workers.


Ø Learn about the academic, technical, and personal skills required by particular jobs.
Ø Understand the connection between university, work, and your goals for the future.
Ø Develop the skills required to secure future employment.

Requirements:

1. Your experience must consist of a minimum of four hours.


2. You are required to submit evidence of seeking permission to visit the organization
(email), during visit (pictures), and visiting card of contact person.
3. You will make a list of questions to be asked at time of site visit. Attach a copy.
4. Write a thank you letter and hand it over on the day of visit in the end. Please get it
signed by the instructor. Attach a copy.
5. Please submit host feedback form filled by the contact person at the site. Attach a copy.
6. You will submit the reflection sheet after your visit. The submission date is November
14, 2022.

Proper behavior at the workplace:


 Be reliable and prompt
 Be honest.
 Have a positive attitude – be friendly, courteous, polite, and cooperative with workers
and clients
 Notify the appropriate supervisor (your job shadow host) if you are going to be late or
absent.
 If you do not understand something, ask questions or ask for help.
 This activity may help you in your career so take it seriously.

Format of Student Reflection Sheet

Reflect on your Job Shadow experience. Use this reflection sheet to share your experience and
learning.
1. What type of work did you observe during your job shadow?
2. Describe your Job Shadow site?
3. What kinds of skills did you see being employed? Think in terms of knowledge/technical
skills (e.g., computers, tools, machinery) and personal/transferable skills (e.g., leadership,
communication, critical thinking).
4. After observing the skills needed for this career, what courses / workshops/ guest speaker
sessions or community service opportunities would support learning these skills?
5. What did you like BEST about your Job Shadow experience?
6. What did you like LEAST about your Job Shadow experience?
7. What surprised you the most about your Job Shadow experience?
8. What did you learn about the company and its employees? Please explain.
9. Describe ways that technology is used at the workplace you visited
10. How the activities/jobs/work was vertically fit with the organizational strategies?
11. Write a brief summary about what your Job Shadow meant to you.
12. As a result of your Job Shadow experience, are you still planning to pursue the same career
or has the experience led you in a new direction?
