General Physics 1
The Lava Lamp Experiment
Objectives:

After this experiment the students are expected to;

 describe the reactions happened to experiment A and B;

 compare and contrast the performed experiments;

Materials:

a bottle of water salt 1 pouch of Vinegar

cooking oil baking soda 2 food coloring

2 glass/transparent containers1 tablespoon 1 teaspoon

Procedures: (experiment A)

1. Prepare the materials.

2. Fill the glass container 2/3rds full of water and fill the remainder with cooking
oil.
3. Add some food coloring. Make sure it won’t mix with water.
4. Slowly pour one teaspoon of salt into the container.
5. Observe how colorful orbs of oil fall to the bottom.

Procedures: (experiment B)

1. Add one tablespoon of baking soda into the glass container.

2. Pour the oil carefully to avoid ruining the layer of baking soda.
3. Together combine the vinegar and food coloring in a separate glass.
4. Pour the vinegar into the container containing oil and baking soda.
5. Observe the reaction.

Guide Questions:

1. What happened when the cooking oil was added to the water?
a. Since the oil is lighter than water, it didn’t mix or dissolve when it was
added. Therefore it got separated and stayed above the water.
2. Describe the reaction occurred after the salt added.
b. After the salt added, the oil started falling down to the bottom of the
container. It binds to the oil, making it heavier than the water.
3. What are the similarities and differences of experiment A and experiment B?
c. Similarities:
-The experiments performed are both entitled The Lava Lamp.
- There are chemical reactions present in each experiment.
Differences:
- There are differences in the materials used. Experiment A used salt,
water, food coloring, and cooking oil. While in the experiment B,
only the saltand water were substituted with baking soda and
vinegar.
- The two experiments showed different reactions.

As the vinegar fall through the oil to the bottom of the bottle, it reacts with the
baking soda to make carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles attach themselves to the
colored vinegar and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the
color sinks back to the bottom of the bottle.
