The Prize  is the Curt Bergfors Foundation’s primary tool to encourage agents of change
and promote game-changing initiatives.

They look for brilliant concepts and projects all year round and welcome nominations
from all over the world. Anyone can submit one’s own initiative or someone else’s,
single or multiple nominations.

Funding Information

The Prize awards two initiatives with 2 million USD each to speed up and broaden their
application.

Eligibility Criteria

 Nominees can be individuals, groups, organizations or businesses fully

committed to sustainable food or distinctly identified projects implemented by
existing companies and institutions. They welcome a broad range of initiatives.
They can be science-based or derived from practice, industrial or crafts-based,
entrepreneurial or institutional, behavioral, or high-tech. Still, they must have the
potential for broad scaling and application.
 They are casting our net far and wide. That means anyone can submit a
nomination, one’s own initiative or project, or somebody else’s. They also set
zero limits to the number of submissions per individual. One, two, or more, they

 Innovation – novel thinking and/or practice. How does the initiative differ from the
current methods and why does it matter?
 Time to impact – Significant impact within ten years or faster. What stage is the
initiative in right now, and how long until full-scale application in the best-case
scenario?
 Scalability – Capacity to scale broadly. How broadly can the initiative be applied
nationally, regionally, and globally? The challenge is global, this is why the
solutions must be able to scale broadly.
 Evidence – Proof that the initiative works or may work. What theoretical
underpinning or practical/operational evidence is there?

Ignite announces Call for Proposals in the Area of Agriculture Science
(India)

Deadline Date: 20-Aug-2022

Donor Name: Ignite

Ignite is seeking applications for its Fast Grant Awards in the area of Agriculture
Science.

The Challenges

 Industrial-scale ammonia production and its subsequent conversion to synthetic

N fertilizers is a high energy-consuming process. It also has a very high carbon
footprint – the hydrogen gas used as feedstock is produced from petroleum gas,
coal, or other oils, releasing considerable CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
How can they produce N fertilizers in nature-friendly and sustainable ways to
ensure future crop productivity increases?
 The easy availability of synthetic N fertilizers has often led to their excessive use
at the expense of other organic sources. Organic manure, say farmyard manure,
may not provide as much N per unit volume but adds the much-needed carbon
essential for maintaining microbial activity and sustaining soil health for plant
growth. Can novel biological sources be discovered or formulations be concocted
in resource-efficient ways to address this problem of depletion of organic carbon
and restore soil health? These need not necessarily replace synthetic N fertilizers
but must be compatible with them to be used in judicious combinations to reduce
their overall use without compromising crop productivity.
 Soluble forms of N used by plants are highly mobile in soil. Synthetic fertilizers
applied to the soil tend to leach down beyond the root zones and often reach
water bodies where they cause eutrophication. Furthermore, several species of
microbes in the soil act as de-nitrifying agents that release the fixed N back to its
gaseous form, reducing the availability for plants. Can they develop novel
methods to reduce loss and optimize N fertilizer usage?
 Plants belonging to the Leguminosae species have a symbiotic relationship with
the Nfixing soil microbe, Rhizobium spp., which are harboured in their root
nodules from where they provide fixed N to the plant. Free-living microbes can
also fix N and make it available to the crop plant. Can they develop new microbial
inoculants as naturefriendly supplements to address the soil nutrient depletion
problem? Are there genetic engineering/genome editing methods to enhance
plants to leverage N-fixing microbes?
 Crop plants show significant genetic diversity in their ability to assimilate
available N or Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE). What types of genetic
engineering/genome editing in plants will improve their NUE, and how does one
make it commercially viable?

Call for Proposals to Address Cooperative Business Models among
Primary Producers

Deadline Date: 22-Sep-2022

Donor Name: European Commission (EC)

The European Commission (EC) has announced a call for proposals to address
cooperative business models among primary producers for the efficient conversion of
agricultural residues, by-products, and waste into high-value bio-based materials and
products with improved sustainability characteristics.

The sustainable mobilisation and valorisation of secondary resources can result in the
creation of new economic and social opportunities in rural areas, while also protecting
the environment and climate. Implementing these new opportunities needs the
establishment of new bio-based systems, new business models and interactions
between primary producers and other actors all the way to consumers, as well as
ensuring circularity.

However, individual farmers usually do not have the financial and technical capacity to
invest in the necessary infrastructure or to provide a sufficient quantity and quality of
these biological resources to make innovative valorisations economically viable.

Details

Proposals under this topic should:

 Demonstrate the potential of contractual agreements or fully developed

shareholder/ownership concepts (e.g., cooperatives or producer organisations) to
optimise harvesting, logistics and processing of secondary bio-based feedstock
at relevant scales.
 Co-design and implement business cases for primary producers that build on
existing rural infrastructures, support the economy of scale, and contribute to a
fair distribution of costs, benefits, and risks among the economic operators in the
bio-based system.
 Demonstrate resource-efficient pathways for the valorisation and conversion of
waste, by-products, and residues from agriculture for innovative high-value
materials and products at relevant scales.
 Establish long-term strategies to serve the stakeholder’s interests long-term.
 If applicable, explore cross-sectoral synergies and collaborations (e.g., regional
clusters) to improve the economic viability and commercial operativity and
synergies with the food industry.
 Analyse and minimise the potential negative impacts of alternative uses of
biomass streams on the environment and market/sector (e.g. in terms of

https://www.fundsforngos.org
https://fundsforngospremium.com Page 61
biodiversity, soil fertility, competing sectors, etc.), while taking care of the full
circularity potentials (e.g. soil improver, bio-based fertilisers, organic crop
protection agents, etc.).
 Apply and/or adapt existing/mature or novel digital technologies, provided that
they are instrumental to achieving the project’s outcomes and scope, especially
to ensure high standards of resource efficiency and environmental protection.
Applications of digital technologies that should be considered in the scope
among the following areas:
o chemicals, materials and process design & modelling
o (real-time) process monitoring and optimisation (including environmental
performance)
o predictive maintenance & plant engineering and
o data analytics and data management of the bio-based business models
and solutions in the scope”.
 Disseminate the outputs and learning outcomes from the project in order to
increase the public awareness, and awareness of relevant industry actors, of
potential benefits of bio-based solutions.

Funding Information

The check will normally be done for the coordinator if the requested grant amount is
equal to or greater than EUR 500 000, except for:

 public bodies (entities established as a public body under national law, including
local, regional or national authorities) or international organisations; and
 cases where the individual requested grant amount is not more than EUR 60 000
(lowvalue grant).

Expected Outcomes

Project results should contribute to the following expected outcomes:

 Vertical integration of primary producers in bio-based systems and improved

cooperation between regional stakeholders in rural areas
 Deployment of replicable, regional, circular bio-based business models through
organisational innovation.
 Mobilisation and circular use of secondary biological resources and new
valorisation pathways for high added-value applications in the scope of CBE
through biorefinery processing and technologies.
 Through the development of new jobs and growth, diversification, and
revitalisation of the economy in rural areas, ensure fair benefit distribution among
all actors involved, with a focus on the primary sector.
 Production of added-value bio-based materials and industrial products with
improved sustainability characteristics and identification of factors for success in
respect to robust contracts and agreements, training, and capacity building.

https://www.fundsforngos.org
https://fundsforngospremium.com Page 62
 Support the establishment of cooperatively owned biorefineries, taking
advantage of having full control of the value chain, optimizing value creation and
stability in high quality feedstock supply.
 Preservation/improvement of soil quality and fertility.
 Public awareness and acceptance of bio-based solutions.
 Support market uptake growth and acceptance of scalable bio-based solutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for funding, applicants must be established in one of the eligible countries,
i.e.:

 the Member States of the European Union, including their outermost regions;
 the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) linked to the Member States;
 eligible non-EU countries:
o countries associated to Horizon Europe;
o low- and middle-income countries.
