USAID: Modernizing Agriculture Activity in Rwanda
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications to
implement a cooperative agreement with a period of performance of five years from
qualified entities to implement the Modernizing Agriculture Activity (ModAg) Activity.
Objectives
Funding Information
Geographical Focus: The ModAg activity will work with farmers, businesses and
entrepreneurs in rural, urban and peri-urban areas across Rwanda in response to
market supply and demand. The Activity will continue to center its work in the current
Feed the Future (FTF) Zone of Influence (ZOI), but have flexibility for the Activity to also
include areas outside of the ZOI when that will support the development of markets,
technologies and practices within the ZOI as well. The FTF ZOI is currently Bugesera,
Burera, Gakenke, Gatsibo, Karongi, Kayonza, Ngoma, Nyabihu, Nyamagabe,
Nyamasheke, Ngororero, Rubavu, and Rutsiro districts.
Outcomes
The USAID/Rwanda Modernizing Agriculture (ModAg) Activity will seek to address the
following overarching problem: Rwanda's agricultural sector is unable to realize its full
potential to drive inclusive growth, food security and nutrition because it lacks strong
linkages to profitable markets and sufficient financing, and experiences inadequate use

Target Audience
Planning your project for a specific audience will increase your project's chance
of making an impact on the participants.
Projects or events that are aimed at a generic group of people, e.g. ‘residents of
Leeds’ or ‘families’, are unlikely to be successful in their application as this
indicates that the applicant has not considered their audience when planning
their project.
Examples of a good target audience to plan your project around are ‘academics
studying philosophy’, ‘people who follow Hinduism’, ‘parents of vegetarian
children’ or ‘people who are passionate about their companion animals’.
Eligible Projects
Eligibility Criteria
The projects are based across the globe, with a particular emphasis on those
based in economically developing countries.

Call for Proposals to Address Cooperative Business Models among
Primary Producers
The European Commission (EC) has announced a call for proposals to address
cooperative business models among primary producers for the efficient conversion of
agricultural residues, by-products, and waste into high-value bio-based materials and
products with improved sustainability characteristics.
The sustainable mobilisation and valorisation of secondary resources can result in the
creation of new economic and social opportunities in rural areas, while also protecting
the environment and climate. Implementing these new opportunities needs the
establishment of new bio-based systems, new business models and interactions
between primary producers and other actors all the way to consumers, as well as
ensuring circularity.
However, individual farmers usually do not have the financial and technical capacity to
invest in the necessary infrastructure or to provide a sufficient quantity and quality of
these biological resources to make innovative valorisations economically viable.

https://www.fundsforngos.org
https://fundsforngospremium.com Page 61
biodiversity, soil fertility, competing sectors, etc.), while taking care of the full
circularity potentials (e.g. soil improver, bio-based fertilisers, organic crop
protection agents, etc.).
Apply and/or adapt existing/mature or novel digital technologies, provided that
they are instrumental to achieving the project’s outcomes and scope, especially
to ensure high standards of resource efficiency and environmental protection.
Applications of digital technologies that should be considered in the scope
among the following areas:
o chemicals, materials and process design & modelling
o (real-time) process monitoring and optimisation (including environmental
performance)
o predictive maintenance & plant engineering and
o data analytics and data management of the bio-based business models
and solutions in the scope”.
Disseminate the outputs and learning outcomes from the project in order to
increase the public awareness, and awareness of relevant industry actors, of
potential benefits of bio-based solutions.
Funding Information
The check will normally be done for the coordinator if the requested grant amount is
equal to or greater than EUR 500 000, except for:
public bodies (entities established as a public body under national law, including
local, regional or national authorities) or international organisations; and
cases where the individual requested grant amount is not more than EUR 60 000
(lowvalue grant).
Expected Outcomes
https://www.fundsforngos.org
https://fundsforngospremium.com Page 62
Support the establishment of cooperatively owned biorefineries, taking
advantage of having full control of the value chain, optimizing value creation and
stability in high quality feedstock supply.
Preservation/improvement of soil quality and fertility.
Public awareness and acceptance of bio-based solutions.
Support market uptake growth and acceptance of scalable bio-based solutions.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for funding, applicants must be established in one of the eligible countries,
i.e.:
the Member States of the European Union, including their outermost regions;

Grassland Farmer of the Year Competition in Ireland
Teagasc is currently accepting applications for the Grassland Farmer of the Year
(GFOTY) Competition to promote grassland excellence among all Irish livestock
farmers.
The competition will recognise those farmers who are achieving high levels of grass
utilisation in a sustainable manner. Irish agriculture faces serious challenges in trying to
meet Greenhouse Gas and Ammonia emissions targets. Improved Nutrient
Management and the use of clover are now more important than ever. The sustainability
of our livestock production must improve.
Some farmers have to operate with difficult land and the competition will recognise this
challenge. Pasture performance is critical to the success of organic farming, there is a
category for organic farmers.
Competition Focus: Applicants should have established the level of grass production
on their farm. Applicants will be pre-judged on previous grass production data. A
knowledge of farm soil fertility is essential. The sustainability of the grass-based system
of production will be assessed. The necessary grazing infrastructure on each farm will
also be a focus for this competition.
Categories
Note: The young farmer category can include entrants that are farm managers or
farming in a collaborative arrangement.
