Flash and Fire Points Determination

Objective:
To be able to determine the flash point and fire point of lubricating oil and study their
effects.

Theory:
The flash point of oil is the temperature at which it gives off sufficient vapor to form a
flammable mixture with air. This temperature is relative to existing pressure where the oil is
located. The fire point is the temperature at which it gives off sufficient vapor that burns
continously once it has been ignited.
Since we are located in the torid zone, the standard tester used in determining the flash
and fire point of lubricating oil is the cleveland open cup tester. This tester consists of a metal
cup supported upon by a metal covered by an asbestos boated having a circular hole to fit the
cup.
