Grade: Third Length of Lesson: 45 minutes/1 day

Big Idea (Essential Question): What is our commonly-held American democratic values,
principles and beliefs about diversity?
Domain: Social Studies
Standard: SS.3.1

principles and beliefs: Diversity
Cluster: civics

*Specific Objective:
Students will demonstrate understanding by creating a story or an art piece with 85% accuracy,
as assessed by individual work.

Introduction:
Teacher will introduce the topic by writing the word lovely up on the whiteboard. Each student
will come to the board and write a word that they think of when they hear the word lovely.
Students will then come up to the board and talk about what they notice about all the words.
Teacher will then write the words Big, Small, curly, straight, loud, quiet, smooth, wrinkly. A
world of differences all add up to the same thing: we are all lovely.

Method(s):

Students will be doing a whole group discussion and watching videos.

Materials:
 Smart board
 Elmo
 Projector
 Vinn diagram
 Book: Lovely

Direct Instruction:
Teacher will introduce the book called “Lovely” to the students. Tell students to think about
what the book suggests being lovely. Teacher will read the story and ask questions throughout
the story.
Guided Practice:
Teacher will ask these questions: What happened in the story? Where did diversity come up in
the plot? When did the book talk about appreciation of differences? Teacher will explain that
recognizing diversity means understanding that each individual is different and unique and
recognizing differences like race, culture, language, and abilities. Teacher will tell students that
they can either create a story or an art piece that appreciates diversity. Teacher will show the
students an art piece.
Independent Practice:
Students will complete the writing a story or art piece. Teacher will pass out art piece puzzle.
Differentiation:
group discussion, paraphrase directions, allow time for response, use pictures to show
knowledge, help students in a small group

Formative Assessments:
Teacher will assess students by observing their answers about the word lovely, diversity
.
Lesson Closure:
Teacher will have students sit in a circle. Each student will lay their art piece on the floor.
Another student will read each others’ stories or art pieces. Then students will say what they
notice about the other student’s story or art piece. Teacher will then ask students How can we
appreciate each others differences in the classroom? How can learning about diversity support
relationships in the community?
Time & Resources:
Students will complete this lesson in 1 day 45 minutes.
