DATA PROCESSING
(ANALYSIS)

• To reveal meaningful statistical information

from the data
• To use the information in geological studies
• Using the geology to explain the statistical
information
STATISTICAL
PARAMETERS

• Basic Statistics
• Spatial Statistics
BASIC STATISTICS

• Histogram, Mean, Coef. of Variation:

to reveal general structure of data
• No spatial consideration
• For geological studies, spatial is needed
SPATIAL STATISTICS

• Variogram: to reveal spatial statistical

structures of data
• Window statistics: to anticipate proportional
effects in the data
• Trend surface: to reveal the trend and
regularity of the surface
VARIOGRAM
n
1
γ ( h) =
2N
∑ (Z
i =1
i − Z(i + h ) ) 2

• Most essential tool in GEOSTATS

• Based on the concept of Regionalised
Variable
• Measure the degree of spatial
interdependency of data either for Omni-
directional and Directional
n

γ ( h) =
2N
∑ (Z
i =1
i − Z( i + h ) ) 2
TREND SURFACE
n n−k
Ztrend = ∑ ∑ A jk X j Y k
k =0 j =0

• Trend/Regional Trend: order 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

• Local Anomaly (Residual)
• Degree of regularity of surface measured by
coefficient of multiple correlation
n n−k
Ztrend = ∑ ∑ A jk X j Y k
k =0 j =0
WINDOWS STATS
• Use as one of smoothing tools in spatial data
distribution
• Local (windows) Means and the spatial
changes
• Local (windows) Coefficient of variations
• Reveal proportional effect: correlation
between LM and LC
FIGURES
Range = 270m
Nugget Effect = 2.9
Sill = 6.5

Thickness, Sangatta Seam

Range = 1008m
Nugget Effect = 1.9
Sill = 5.1

Thickness, A1 Seam Bukit Asam

CONCLUSIONS
• Different Statistical Features of thickness
distribution between Sangatta and A1 Seams
• This difference must have the geological
explanation
• The degree of continuity and regularity of the
coal seams can be measured and compared
• This useful as a guidance in any coal
reserves estimation
