-Lalani of the distant Sea multimodal Text is categorized as middle grade fiction.

2. What is the author’s message?


The author’s message about the story is a strong theme of perseverance in this book
and it has many other messages throughout the book, there are so many lessons and
messages you can learn from the story about self-worth as Lalani struggles to find her
own.

3. Who are they addressing? How can you tell?


- Kids will love this fantastical adventure that emphasizes the power of friendship,
compassion, and self-reliance.
4. What type of text did they create? What genre conventions do you see?
-The genre of Lalani of the distant sea is Fantasy Fiction and Adventure Fiction
5.How was the text distributed? In what ways does it relate to the target
audience?
-I recommend it for ages 9 to adult. The writing is easy enough for a 9-year-old to read
but the plot is also just as engaging for teens and adults. Lalani has some fight scenes
with mythical creatures that describe blood and injuries.
6. What modes of communication are they using? Which are they emphasizing?
Do these decisions support the message and/or appropriately target their
audience?
- Author Erin Entrada Kelly seamlessly weaves life lessons into Lalani of the Distant Sea
and uses vivid details, gorgeous illustrations, and a rich cast of characters to bring
Sanlagita and its mythical creatures to life. There are some frightening moments along
Lalani's epic quest to save her friends and family, but her courage and perseverance
will encourage kids to believe in themselves, fight for their loved ones, and remind them
that good will always conquer evil.
