Ivory Coast, officially known as République du Côte d’Ivoire, is a country located on the coast of western Africa. Its de facto
capital is Abidjan, and the administrative capital designate (since 1983) is Yamoussoukro. It covers an area of 322,463 km²,
slightly smaller than Poland, or slightly larger than the U.S. state of New Mexico. Its citizens are called Ivorian people. Like
many other African countries, Ivory Coast is linguistically rich.
1 All African languages represented in Ivory Coast belong to one of three subgroups of the Niger-Congo family. 2They are

Kwa in the south, Mande in the northwest, and Gur in the northeast. 3A trade language, known as Dyula-Taboussi and akin
to the Mande Bambara, is spoken by many Ivorian Muslim traders. 4Another major language is français de Moussa, a pidgin
French widely spoken in Abidjan. 5The official language is French, spoken throughout the country.
Although Ivory Coast was colonized by France for more than a century, its traditional arts still flourish. The Senufo people
carve masks, decorate doors with esoteric symbols, and dance to the slow, majestic rhythms of drums supported by
xylophones. The mountaineers of the Man forest wear masks showing horrifying faces, and they dance to a pace
governed by the sound of drums and led by stilt-walkers. Versatile Baule artists make fine gold jewelry and wooden
sculptures.

Feijoa, also called pineapple guava or guavasteen, is a small evergreen tree of the myrtle family, related to guavas. It is
native to southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina and is cultivated in mild dry climates for its sweet-
sour fruit. (1) Feijoas were introduced into southern Europe in 1890 and into California in the 1900s. Their fruit can be
eaten fresh, made into jam and jelly, and crystallized. (2) The tree is grown as an ornamental in some places.
The tree is about 5 metres (15 feet) high, a lot like an apple tree in terms of height. …. (3) It has olive-shaped bicolored
leaves, dark green above and silvery beneath. (4) Its large white flowers have purple and red interiors. Feijoas’ oblong
(oval-shaped) fruit is approximately 5 cm (2 inches) long and dull green in colour, marked with crimson. (5) It has a white
round pulp with a sweet-sour taste that is fairly similar to a pineapple’s taste. The fruits fall when mature but must be kept
in a cool place until they are soft enough to eat. Feijoas are propagated by seeds, cuttings, whip grafting, and layering of
low branches.
Feijoa trees are best grown in a subtropical climate with rather low humidity. Their optimum annual rainfall is 30 to 40
inches (762-1,016 mm). The plant thrives where the weather is cool part of the year and it can withstand temperatures as
low as 12° to 15° F (-11.11°-9.44° C). The flavor of the fruit is much better in cool than in warm regions.
