 ABSTRACT

Ekiti State Water Corporation came into existence by an edict in the year 1997 in the Ekiti
State Official Gazette No. 4 of 1997, and amended in the year 2012. It is said to be one of the
best water corporations in Nigeria, its major areas of operations are: Treatment and
purification or raw water, Quality control and quality analysis on both raw water and treated
water and Distribution of treated water. In the course of my training, I was educated on the
seven different treatment stages and purification of water which are: Aeration, Coagulation,
Flocculation Sedimentation. Filtration, Disinfection and pH correction. Aeration is the
introduction of oxygen into the raw water and also to remove odour. Coagulation is the
coming together of dirt particles in tiny forms (micro flocs) occurs after the addition of
coagulants e.g. Alum and coagulant aid e.g. Lime. Flocculation is the coming together of the
coagulated particles to form heavier particles known as macro flocs. Sedimentation is the
period of settling of the macro flocs before transferring to the next stage. Filtration is the
removal of escaped dirt that did no settle during sedimentation. Disinfection is the getting rid
of pathogenic organisms and this is done by disinfectants e.g. Chlorine. pH correction is the
adjustment of the pH value to the World Health Organization standard. In conclusion, my
three months training experience has availed me the opportunity of exposure to new
equipment, water treatment stages and most of all, has taught me the potable water
production.
