Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

A. INTRODUCTION TO CADD

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is simply; a design and drafting with the aid of a computer.
Design is creating a real product from an idea. Drafting is the production of the drawings that are
used to document a design.

AutoCAD is used by every Engineering and Design office in the world. Mechanical and
Electrical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Architect and Aeronautical Engineers plus many other
disciplines.

CAD Software

AutoCAD is a computer aided design software developed by Autodesk Inc. AutoCAD was first
introduced in 1982. By the year 2000, it is estimated that there were over 4 million AutoCAD users
worldwide.

AutoCADD system is a powerful application that can create accurate drawing from 2D (2
Dimensional) to 3D (3 Dimensional) ‘models'; giving the designer absolute control over the design
from start to finish. Object created can be rendered on screen to give an idea of what the finished
“product” looks like.

In order to become effective and efficient in using a CAD system, the students must learn to
create geometric entities quickly and accurately. Lines and circles are the first two, and perhaps the
most important two, geometric entities that one should master the skills of creating and modifying.
Straight lines and circles are used in almost all technical designs. In examining the different types of
planar geometric entities, the importance of lines and circles becomes obvious. Triangles and
polygons are planar figures bounded by straight lines. Ellipses and splines can be constructed by
connecting arcs with different ranges. In this module, the different ways of creating lines and circles
using AutoCAD® 2017 version are examined.

Starting Up AutoCAD 2017:

1. Select the AutoCAD 2017 option on the Program menu or select the AutoCAD 2017 icon on the
Desktop. Click Start Drawing to start a new drawing.

2. Once the program is loaded into memory, the AutoCAD 2017 main drawing screen will appear on
the screen.

Note: AutoCAD automatically assigns generic names, Drawing X, as new drawings are
created. In our example, AutoCAD opened the graphics window using the default system
units and assigned the drawing name Drawing1.dwg (.dwg is the filename extension of
AutoCADD).

By default, AutoCADD has four workspaces configurations:

 2D Drafting & annotation

 3D Modelling
 AutoCADD Classic
 Initial SetUp Workspace

A. Visual Styles – workspace visual styles helps users view the different angle of drawing/model
(in 3D) .
B. Application Menu – use to access the commands such as New, Open, Save, Print and Close
C. Ribbon - The ribbon is a UI tool that contains various commands organized into tabs and
panels.
D. Quick access Toolbar - contains icons for the following commands: Qnew, Open, QSave,
SaveAs, Plot, Undo, and Redo. But like most other UI elements, you can customize this to
meet accessibility of some of the commands frequently access in CADD
E. Menu Bar – contains group of commands according to usage.
F. Title Bar- the default filename assigned by AutoCADD system.
G. Navigation Cube – this indicates the perspective you are viewing your drawing from. The
cube contains “TOP,” “FRONT,” “LEFT,” “RIGHT,” “BACK,” and “BOTTOM.”
H. Cursor/Crosshair – the icon used to point to objects in AutoCADD. Usually navigated using
the mouse.

I. Drawing Area – the black portion area in AutoCADD where the user can create the drawing.
J. UCS Icon – User Coordinate System specifies the 2D XY work plane and 3D X,Y and Z Icon.
The work plane is the plane that all 2D drawings snap to.
K. Command Window - The command window is located at the bottom of the application. All
the commands that the user entered or activated manually are displayed.
L. Status Bar – used to tunt ON and OFF AutoCADD settings/ It contains GRID, OSNAP,ORTHO,
SNAP, POLAR buttons.

THE FUNCTION OF THE MOUSE

The mouse is a very useful and important part of creating a drawing in CADD. As a pointing
device the following are themouse controls for navigating autoCADD Software for your drawing.

C. UNITS AND LIMITS

C.1 UNITS
There are a few steps you should take before you start a drawing with AutoCAD. Firstly, you
should ensure that you’re using the right unit measurements. In the Command window TYPE UNITS
press enter, then setup the Units according to the specification of your drawing:

C.2 SETTING UP THE DRAWING AREA LIMITS :

Setting the Drawing Limits controls the extents of the display of the grid. It also serves as a
visual reference that marks the working area. It can also be used to prevent construction outside
the grid limits and as a plot option that defines an area to be plotted/printed. Note that this
setting does not limit the region for geometry construction.
 In the command prompt area, the message “Reset Model Space Limits: Specify lower left
corner or [On/Off] :” is displayed. Press the ENTER key once to accept the default
coordinates .

 In the command prompt area, the message “Specify upper right corner :” is displayed.
Press the ENTER key again to accept the default coordinates .

 Move the graphics cursor near the upper-right corner inside the drawing area and note
that the drawing area is unchanged. (The Drawing Limits command is used to set the
drawing area, but the display will not be adjusted until a display command is used.)
 Move the graphics cursor near the upper-right corner inside the drawing area and note
that the display area is updated.
