forever remain a child.”
History shapes the present and future of countries, and the world of architecture is no exception.
In any city, the ancient buildings that have stood the test of time and are still standing strong
despite calamities tell the story of that city's architectural history. These ancient constructions
are generally known as heritage buildings and authorities take special care to preserve these
structures. Typically, a heritage building means a structure that requires preservation because
of its historical, architectural, cultural, aesthetic or ecological value. Archaeological sites, ruins
and remains are also covered under the term heritage sites.

1. Students (INDIVIDUALLY) are required to choose one heritage building in Malaysia

(preferably those that has been gazetted under Act645). Students need to explore the building
and come up with an A4 size booklet describing the building. The booklet may include but not
limited to this followings:-

a) The historical background of the building;

b) Architectural style and characteristics of the building / the building uniqueness;
c) Architectural elements (building fabrics, special materials, building details etc);
d) The building fabrics;
e) The conservation process carried out to the building;

4. All data and information collected should be used for designing and composing a booklet in
only, (Use your creativity to make it an interesting and informative booklet). It is strictly for
academic purposes.

5.Student may obtain and choose a building based on their own search. Students may go to
The National Heritage Department website to look on the information about Heritage
Buildings in Malaysia http://www.heritage.gov.my .

Student need to get an approval from their respective lecturer before proceeding with their
selected building.

When writing an architectural description, it is important to focus on the construction, form,

features, and finishes that exist today. If current elements of the building are modern alterations
to its historic appearance, then this should be noted. You may have your own creativity to
produce a very interesting booklet for this task.
