Business Excellence Models

 Were first called Total Quality Management models.

 But today it was the termed as BEM since it emphasizes the importance of “excellence” which is not
only for the product and process quality but in all aspects of a business.
 helps organizations to assess their strengths and areas for improvement and guide them on what to
do next.
 With these, it provides an extensive method to the management as to how they can manage their
business and obtain key decisions that will lead to a sustainable and measurable success.
Aside from that
 serves as the organization’s own internal business consultant
 BEM ensures that decisions made in the organization incorporates to the needs of their stakeholders
but at the same time follows the organization’s objectives, and also consider the business’ best
practices.
 Excellence models are used to audit good management practice in the general core areas of a business
or organization; (we can also say that it can be considered as) self- assessment (in the organization),
and the main reason is to identify and deploy good practice and organization-wide learning.
 Basically, the role of BEM is to develop and strengthen the management systems and processes of an
organization in order to improve its performance and to create value to its stakeholders.

 Organizations make their own frameworks, but most of them are based on the following models:
 the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
 the EFQM Excellence Award
 the Deming Prize
 Although there are many other models that can also be followed, however these three are the most
common.

Let’s take a look at what are these three models all about
The first one is
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
 the award was established in order to raise awareness of quality management and recognize U.S.
companies that have implemented successful quality management systems.
In order to win this award, an organization follows the Baldridge Excellence Framework
 The Baldrige Excellence Framework serves two main purposes:
 To help organizations assess their improvement efforts, diagnose their overall performance
management system, and identify their strengths and opportunities for improvement
 To identify Baldrige Award recipients that will serve as role models for other organizations.
 There are Seven criteria categories or also known as Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence
 these seven criteria represent the various aspects of organizational management and performance

The next one is the

EQFM Excellence Award or the European Foundation for Quality Management
 Its objective is to recognize outstanding organizations worldwide, whether private, public or not-for-
profit.
 These organizations demonstrate an indisputable track record of success in turning strategy into action
and the continuous improvement of their performance.
 EFQM Excellence Award also has its own framework, the EFQM Model
 is a self-assessment framework for measuring the strengths and areas for improvement of an
organisation across all of its activities.
 Just like the Baldrige Excellence Framework, the EFQM also has its own nine “big ideas” that underpins
the premise and attempts to cover all of the organization’s activities.
 The premise provided by the model starts with: Customer Results, People Results and Society
results are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy, People, Partnerships and
Resources leading ultimately to excellence in Key Performance Results.

Next is the Deming Prize

Deming Prize
 an annual award presented to an organization that has implemented TQM suitable for its management
philosophy, scope/type/scale of business, and management environment.
Deming also has its own framework
 Deming’s 14 Points on Quality Management, or the Deming Model of Quality Management - a core
concept on implementing total quality management (TQM), is a set of management practices to help
companies increase their quality and productivity.
 Deming’s lasting influence – High profile companies such as Toyota and Sony applied the 14 points and
helped Japan become a world manufacturing leader.
 If you look at how successful these two companies are, we can say that this framework really is
effective to organiations

Benchmarking
 the process of measuring products, services, and processes against those of organizations known to be
leaders in one or more aspects of their operations.
 Its like comparing products and whichever is the best among them becomes the new standard for that
item or services.
 it provides ideas for improvement and adoption of useful practices
 it can give necessary insights to help you understand how your organization compares with similar
organizations, and how you can make it better
 allows the organization to set goals and measure productivity, on the basis of the best industry
practices.
