“We Ought to Obey God Rather than Men”

Christ declared of the Jews, “In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the
commandments of men.” This is being done today. The commandments of men are
exalted, and men are trying to force their fellow-men to render obedience to them. But in
no case are we to take the word of men before the Word of God. “We ought to obey God
rather than men,” declared Peter. And Christ in his Sermon on the Mount spoke clearly
and distinctly regarding the importance of God's commandments. “Think not,” he said,
“that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in nowise
pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of
heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.” ST May 13, 1897, par. 1
But God never compels men to obey him. Together truth and error take the field. The
light shines forth amid moral darkness, and men are left to choose their own leader. ST

After the king of Babylon had witnessed the wonderful deliverance wrought by God for
his faithful servants, and had seen the men walk unhurt from the fire, he published a
decree that any one speaking a word against the God of heaven, who had so wonderfully
saved his servants, should be cut in pieces, “because,” he declared, “there is no other
god that can deliver after this sort.” Thus, through the deceiving power of the enemy,
God's truth is misinterpreted and misapplied, and his way confused by human

The king had a right to worship the God of heaven, and to do all in his power to exalt
him above other gods; but he had no right to use his authority in compelling his subjects
to change from the worship of idols to the worship of the true God. He had no more right
to threaten men with death for not worshiping the true God than he had to make the
decree consigning to the flames all who refused to worship the golden image. ST May

Today, as in the days of Babylon, the accuser of the brethren is working through
human agencies to hurt and destroy those who are dear to the Lord. Men in power do
not realize that they can not in justice control the minds of their fellow-men, and Satan
works through them to corrupt right dealing. Those who try to keep the commandments
of God, will meet with much opposition. Satanic attributes will take possession of the
hearts of men, making them as hard as steel; and all who depart from evil will make
themselves a prey to the hatred of those that refuse to obey the law of God. ST May 13,

But when the State forms laws directly opposed to the laws of Jehovah, and thus
strives to compel men to obey them, it is following the example set by the king of
Babylon. When it takes the guardianship of the religious interests of the nation, a spirit of
intolerance is manifested if men seek to practise the truth, which, by earnest study, they
have found in God's Word. Those who are actuated by such a spirit of oppression can
not understand what religious liberty means. ST May 13, 1897, par. 6
Every man has a right to worship God according to his own convictions; no
one is called upon to obey laws that are opposed to the laws of God; and the only
position the State can take, and have the approval of God, is to guard the rights of every
individual, permitting no oppression to come upon any one because of religious

As Nebuchadnezzar tried to force his subjects to obey his mandates, so men will try to
force us to disregard the Word of God. They will endeavor to compel us to render
homage to man-made statutes; but in God's strength we are to refuse to dishonor him.
The laws of earthly kingdoms are to be obeyed only when they do not conflict with the
laws of God. When governments are tyrannical and overbearing, when they trample on
God's law, their laws are contemptible in his sight. And when they try to control the minds
and consciences of those whom Christ died to make free, God's children are to show
their loyalty to him by refusing to disobey his commandments. ST May 13, 1897, par. 8
When the judgment shall sit, and the books of heaven shall be opened, all will be
judged, not by the laws that human minds have enacted, but by the law of God, which
existed before the foundations of the world were laid. And the men who have been co-
workers with the first great rebel, and who have not, as guardians of the State, searched
the Word of God, that as rulers they might deal righteously and mercifully, will be judged
by the law they have disregarded and dishonored. ST May 13, 1897, par. 9
In that day when every work shall be brought into judgment, when the Lord Jesus,
with the marks of the crucifixion on his body, shall come in the clouds of heaven with
power and great glory, those who, while holding positions of trust, have caused God's
people to suffer, will cast their idols of silver and gold to the moles and to the bats; “to go
into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the Lord, and
for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.” “For, behold, the
Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the
earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” ST May 13, 1897,

They have shown no respect for God, no fear to transgress his commandments; but
have refused to give their fellow-men rights equal to their own, and have tried to make
them disobey God. They have stubbornly adhered to man-made commandments, and
they will be judged accordingly. Those who persist in enacting laws which men can not
obey without dishonoring God, and those that obey these laws, and trample on the law of
the eternal God, must prepare for the result; for God will not change, nor alter the thing
which has gone out of his mouth. ST May 13, 1897, par. 11
“As the Father hath loved me,” said Christ, “so have I loved you; continue ye in my
love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my
Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you,
that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” “He that saith, I know
him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him, But whoso
keepeth his Word, in him verily is the love of God perfected; hereby know we that we are
in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”

God honors those who honor him by obedience to his precepts. John, the beloved
disciple, was banished to the isle of Patmos for his faithfulness. “I John,” he writes, “who
also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of
Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the Word of God, and for the
testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day.” Did John here mean
Sunday?—There is but one day called the Lord's day, and that is the seventh day of the
week, the Sabbath instituted at creation. God created the world in six days, and on the
seventh he rested and was refreshed. He blessed and sanctified this day, and set it apart
to be observed as a memorial of creation. And on the seventh day John heard behind
him “a great voice, as of a trumpet saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last;
and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches.” “And I
turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden
candlesticks; and in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man.”
Thus Christ honored John for his steadfast obedience to him. ST May 13, 1897, par. 13
 Adam and Eve lost all access to Eden and to the tree of life because they took the
word of another before the Word of God. By this act of disobedience they opened the
flood-gates of woe upon our world. But those who steadfastly adhere to God's Word, will
hear the benediction, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have
right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” No flaming sword
guards that tree from those who, after the light has been given them, in the face of all
opposition turn from the commandments of men to obey the commandments of God. ST

„Trebuie să ascultăm mai mult de Dumnezeu decât de oameni.”

Hristos a declarat despre evrei: „Degeaba Mi se închină ei învăţând ca învăţături

niște porunci omenești.” Aceasta se întâmplă astăzi. Poruncile oamenilor sunt înălțate,
iar oamenii încearcă să-i forțeze pe semenii lor să le asculte. Dar în niciun caz nu trebuie
să luăm cuvântul oamenilor înaintea Cuvântului lui Dumnezeu. „Trebuie să ascultăm mai
mult de Dumnezeu decât de oameni”, a declarat Petru. Iar Hristos în Predica sa de pe
Muntele a vorbit clar și distinct despre importanța poruncilor lui Dumnezeu. „Să nu
credeţi” a spus El, „că am venit să stric Legea sau Prorocii; am venit nu să stric,
ci să împlinesc. Căci adevărat vă spun, câtă vreme nu vor trece cerul și pământul, nu va
trece o iotă sau o frântură de slovă din Lege înainte ca să se fi întâmplat toate
lucrurile. Așa că oricine va strica una din cele mai mici din aceste porunci și va învăţa pe
oameni așa va fi chemat cel mai mic în Împărăţia cerurilor; dar oricine le va păzi și va
învăţa pe alţii să le păzească va fi chemat mare în Împărăţia cerurilor. Căci vă spun că,
dacă neprihănirea voastră nu va întrece neprihănirea cărturarilor și a fariseilor, cu niciun
chip nu veţi intra în Împărăţia cerurilor.” ST 13 mai 1897

Dar Dumnezeu nu îi obligă niciodată pe oameni să asculte de El. Împreună adevărul și

eroarea încep lupta. Lumina strălucește în mijlocul întunericului moral, iar oamenii sunt
lăsați să-și aleagă propriul lider. ST 13 mai 1897

După ce împăratul Babilonului a asistat la minunata izbăvire făcută de Dumnezeu pentru

slujitorii săi credincioși și i-a văzut pe oameni ieșind nevătămați din foc, a dat un decret
potrivit căruia cine va rosti un cuvânt împotriva Dumnezeului cerului, care a salvat atât
de minunat slujitorii săi ar trebui să fie tăiați în bucăți, „pentru că”, a declarat el, „nu
există niciun alt Dumnezeu care să poată elibera în acest fel. Astfel, prin puterea
înșelătoare a inamicului, adevărul lui Dumnezeu este interpretat greșit și aplicat greșit,
iar modul Său este confundat de invențiile umane. ST 13 mai 1897

Împăratul avea dreptul să se închine Dumnezeului cerurilor și să facă toate în puterea sa

pentru a-l înălța deasupra altor zei; dar nu avea dreptul să-și folosească autoritatea
pentru a-i obliga pe supușii săi să se schimbe de la închinarea idolilor la închinarea
adevăratului Dumnezeu. El nu avea mai mult dreptul să amenințe oamenii cu moartea
pentru că nu se închină adevăratului Dumnezeu decât trebuia să facă decretul cu privire
la flăcări pe toți cei care refuzau să se închine imaginii de aur. ST 13 mai 1897

Astăzi, ca în zilele din Babilon, acuzatorul fraților lucrează prin agenții umane pentru a
răni și distruge pe cei care sunt dragi Domnului. Oamenii aflați la putere nu își dau
seama că nu pot controla în justiție mintea semenilor lor, iar Satana lucrează prin ei
pentru a strica tratarea corectă. Cei care încearcă să păstreze poruncile lui Dumnezeu,
se vor întâlni cu multă opoziție. Atributele satanice vor pune stăpânire pe inimile
oamenilor, făcându-le la fel de tari ca oțelul; și toți cei care se îndepărtează de rău se vor
face singuri pradă urii celor care refuză să asculte de Legea lui Dumnezeu. ST 13 mai

Dar, atunci când statul formează legi direct opuse Legilor lui Iehova și se străduiește
astfel să-i oblige pe oameni să se supună lor, urmează exemplul stabilit de regele
Babilonului. Când este nevoie de tutela intereselor religioase ale națiunii, un spirit de
intoleranță se manifestă dacă oamenii încearcă să practice adevărul, pe care, prin studiu
serios, l-au găsit în Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu. Cei care sunt acționați de un astfel de spirit
de opresiune nu pot înțelege ce înseamnă libertatea religioasă. ST 13 mai 1897
Fiecare om are dreptul să se închine lui Dumnezeu după propriile convingeri; nimeni nu
este chemat să asculte de legi care se opun legilor lui Dumnezeu; iar singura poziție pe
care o poate lua statul și are aprobarea lui Dumnezeu este să păzească drepturile
fiecărui individ, permițând ca nicio opresiune să nu vină asupra nimănui din cauza
credinței religioase. ST 13 mai 1897

Pe măsură ce Nebucadnețar a încercat să-i forțeze pe supușii săi să se supună

mandatelor sale, tot așa oamenii vor încerca să ne forțeze să ignorăm Cuvântul lui
Dumnezeu. Se vor strădui să ne constrângă să aducem omagiu statutelor create de om;
dar în puterea lui Dumnezeu trebuie să refuzăm să-L necinstim. Legile împărățiilor
pământești trebuie să fie ascultate numai atunci când acestea nu intră în conflict cu
Legile lui Dumnezeu. Când guvernele sunt tiranice și supraviețuitoare, când călcă pe
Legea lui Dumnezeu, legile lor sunt disprețuitoare în fața Lui. Iar când încearcă să
controleze mințile și conștiințele celor pentru care Hristos a murit pentru a-i elibera, copiii
lui Dumnezeu trebuie să-și arate loialitatea față de El refuzând să nu asculte de
poruncile Sale. ST 13 mai 1897

Când se va da judecata și cărțile cerului vor fi deschise, toate vor fi judecate, nu de legile
pe care le-au adoptat mințile umane, ci de Legea lui Dumnezeu, care a existat înainte de
întemeierea lumii. Iar oamenii care au fost colaboratori cu primul mare rebel și care nu
au căutat, ca gardieni ai Statului, Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca să se poarte cu
dreptate și milostivi, ca și conducători, vor fi judecați de Legea pe care o au
desconsiderat-o și necinstit-o. ST 13 mai 1897

În acea zi când fiecare lucrare va fi adusă la judecată, când Domnul Isus, cu semnele
răstignirii în trupul Său, va veni pe norii cerului cu putere și mare slavă, cei care,
deținând poziții de încredere, au făcut ca poporul lui Dumnezeu să sufere, își vor arunca
idolii de argint și aur la șobolani și la lilieci; „și vor intra în găurile stâncilor și în crăpăturile
pietrelor de frica Domnului și de strălucirea măreţiei Lui, când Se va scula să
îngrozească pământul.” „Căci iată, Domnul iese din locuinţa Lui să pedepsească
nelegiuirile locuitorilor pământului, și pământul va da sângele pe faţă și nu va mai
acoperi uciderile.”. ST 13 mai 1897

Ei nu au arătat niciun respect față de Dumnezeu, nicio teamă în a-I călca poruncile; dar
au refuzat să le dea semenilor lor drepturi egale cu ale lor și au încercat să-i facă să nu
asculte de Dumnezeu. Ei s-au încăpățânat să respecte poruncile făcute de om și vor fi
judecați în consecință. Cei care persistă în adoptarea unor legi pe care oamenii nu le pot
asculta fără a-L dezonora pe Dumnezeu și pe cei care se supun acestor legi și călcând
pe Legea Dumnezeului etern, trebuie să se pregătească pentru rezultat; căci Dumnezeu
nu se va schimba și nu va schimba ceea ce a ieșit din gura Lui. ST 13 mai 1897

„Cum M-a iubit pe Mine Tatăl, așa v-am iubit și Eu pe voi. Rămâneţi în dragostea Mea.
Dacă păziţi poruncile Mele, veţi rămâne în dragostea Mea, după cum și Eu am păzit
poruncile Tatălui Meu și rămân în dragostea Lui. V-am spus aceste lucruri pentru ca
bucuria Mea să rămână în voi și bucuria voastră să fie deplină." „Cine zice: „Îl cunosc” și
nu păzește poruncile Lui este un mincinos și adevărul nu este în el. Dar cine păzește
Cuvântul Lui, în el dragostea lui Dumnezeu a ajuns desăvârșită; prin aceasta știm că
suntem în El. Cine zice că rămâne în El trebuie să trăiască și el cum a trăit Isus.”
„Oricine face păcat face și fărădelege; și păcatul este fărădelege.” „Cine păzește

Dumnezeu îi cinstește pe cei care Îl onorează prin ascultare de preceptele sale. Ioan,
iubitul discipol, a fost alungat în insula Patmos pentru credincioșia sa. „Eu Ioan”, scrie el,
„fratele vostru, care sunt părtaș cu voi la necaz, la Împărăție și la răbdarea lui Isus
Hristos, mă aflam în ostrovul care se cheamă Patmos, din pricina Cuvântului lui
Dumnezeu și din pricina mărturiei lui Iisus Hristos. În ziua Domnului eram în Duhul. ” A
însemnat aici duminică? - Există doar o zi numită ziua Domnului și aceasta este a șaptea
zi a săptămânii, Sabatul instituit la creație. Dumnezeu a creat lumea în șase zile, iar în
ziua a șaptea S-a odihnit și a fost înviorat. El a binecuvântat și sfințit această zi și a pus-
o deoparte pentru a fi observată ca un memorial al creației. Și în a șaptea zi, Ioan a auzit
în urma lui „o voce grozavă, ca o trompetă spunând: Eu sunt Alpha și Omega, Cel dintâi
și Cel de pe urmă; Ce vezi, scrie într-o carte și trimite-o celor șapte biserici. ” M-am
întors să văd glasul care-mi vorbea. Și când m-am întors, am văzut șapte sfeșnice de
aur; Și în mijlocul celor șapte sfeșnice pe cineva, care semăna cu Fiului omului. ” Astfel,
Hristos l-a onorat pe Ioan pentru ascultarea lui fermă față de el. ST 13 mai 1897

Adam și Eva au pierdut orice acces în grădina Eden și la pomul vieții, deoarece au
ascultat de cuvântul altuia înaintea Cuvântului lui Dumnezeu. Prin acest act de
neascultare, ei au deschis porțile inundațiilor de vai ale lumii noastre. Dar cei care
respectă cu fermitate Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, vor auzi binecuvântarea: „Ferice de cei
care păzesc poruncile Lui, ca să aibă drept la pomul vieții și să intre pe porți în cetate.”
Nici o sabie în flăcări nu păzește acel copac de cei care, după ce le-a fost dată lumina, în
fața oricărei opoziții se întorc de la poruncile oamenilor pentru a asculta poruncile lui
