Standing tall since early decades of 20th century, the institute is steadily sailing through the millennium change and has emerged into one of the most
prominent institution- Indian Institute of Technology IIT (ISM) with full bloom functioning of 18 branches of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Manage-
ment Studies and Humanities. IIT (ISM) has had a centenary long record of outperforming achievements and contributions in academia and the industry.
The institute was formally opened on 9th December 1926 and situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260 km from Kolkata with a
campus spread over an area of 393 acres, the fully residential IIT(ISM) has all the facilities of world class academic institute. What started as an institu-
tion to impart mining education has graduated into a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like
B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc., Integrated M.Tech., and MBA. IIT(ISM) was ranked 11 in Engineering Category by NIRF in 2021.

Department of Civil Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering started its first batch of 4-year B.Tech course in Civil Engineering from July 2013. The Department is currently offering
4-year B.Tech program in Civil Engineering, M.Tech Program in Civil Engineering as well as Ph.D program. The Department consists of a team of tal-
ented faculty members who contribute to the development of the young minds. The Department aims to be one of the pioneering centres of teaching,
training and advanced research in Civil Engineering. The fundamental objective of the Department is to provide state-of-the-art teaching and research
facilities for the students to inculcate innovative and new ideas and contribute significantly in the field of construction and infrastructure development.
Students are provided with in-depth understanding of fundamental principles and trained to efficiently utilize their knowledge and skills to handle the
challenges of Civil Engineering. The principal long-range goal of the Department is to establish itself as a Centre of Excellence in Civil Engineering with
special reference to Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering.

Department of Mining Engineering

The Department of Mining Engineering was established in 1926 with the founding of the School in that year by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin.
Over the past 90 years, it has developed and grown to become the largest Department of its kind in the country with excellent facilities for teaching and
research and widespread activities in both coal, metalliferous mining, and construction sectors. Considering the importance of surveying and Geospatial
Technology, M.Tech. Programme in Geomatics have been introduced in the year 2006. The course content covers all issues related to Engineering Sur-
veying, GIS & Remote Sensing including recent developments in Geospatial Technologies with particular emphasis on latest developments in data acqui-
sition tools such as GPS, Total Station, Gyromat, Digital level, 3D Laser Scanners, Slope Stability Radar etc., data representation tools such as Mine
Planning & Design software SURPAC, Remote Sensing and GIS tools such as ERDAS, ArcGIS, SARSCAPE, surveying software viz. LISCAD, Auto-
CAD, Digital Image Processing software viz. PYTHON, MATLAB, Use of AI/ML Data Analytics etc.

1
The Department has been accorded the status of “Centre of Advanced Studies” in Mining Engineering by the University Grant Commission, in recognition
of its high standards of teaching, research and services to the mining industry. Acknowledging the standards of teaching and research imparted and the
contributions made to the mining industry, the Department has been ranked at 26th position in QS ranking among the global universities offering Mining
and Mineral education.

What is the Summer/Winter Schools (Level 1) Capacity Building Program in Geospatial Science and Technology?
Recently knowledge has been identified as the most important driving factor for India’s sustainable economic growth. India has adopted a new infor-
mation regime for sustainable economic growth through its ‘Digital India’ program to support good governance, sustainable development goals and em-
powerment of its citizens. Over the last three decades, the widespread adoption of geospatial technologies into various sectors have proven to be an effec-
tive enabler to meet these challenges. The capacity building program initiatives of the National Geospatial Program (NGP) erstwhile Natural Resource
Data Management System (NRDMS), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to develop national capacity for geospatial science
and technology development through diverse programs in collaboration with various partner organizations adaptation capacity of geospatial science and
technology at across the country. The objective of the program is to build knowledge and various levels of governance in collaboration with academia and
user agencies. The three week Summer/ Winter School in Geospatial technology is being conducted at two levels– Level 1 and Level 2. The 21-day sum-
mer/winter school in Geospatial Science and Technology (Level 1) supported by the National Geospatial Program of the Department of Science and Tech-
nology, Government of India focuses on developing knowledge and capacity building in geospatial technologies through the use of open source geospatial
software.
