Categories

Category 1 hurricane = sustained winds of 74-95 mph.

Category 2 hurricane = sustained winds of 96-110 mph.

Category 3 hurricane = sustained winds of 111-129 mph. 

Category 4 hurricane = sustained winds of 130-156 mph. 

Category 5 hurricane = sustained winds of 157+ mph.

In general, both typhoons and hurricanes


are tropical cyclones but differ in their
locations. The difference between
hurricanes and typhoon is that tropical
cyclones in the western Pacific are called
Typhoons and those in the Atlantic and
east Pacific oceans are called Hurricanes.

First, it starts as a tropical disturbance. Then,


with cyclonic circulation and faster wind
speeds, it becomes a tropical depression. If
the wind keeps getting faster it becomes a
tropical storm and then a hurricane if winds
are more than 74 miles per hour (119 kph).
