JEEPNEY MODERNIZATION

1. Gather information about the Jeepney Modernization in the Philippines and

answer the following questions:

a. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Jeepney Modernization?

i. Advantages:

1. It reduces pollution. Most individuals travel around using

public transportation. Because of this, the upgrading of
jeepneys contributes to less pollution from dust and smoke.
Government laws are in place to assist people in living more
sustainably and to foster environments with clean air.
2. Improves public safety. CCTV and GPS are installed on new
jeepney models and the drivers are more well-trained and
disciplined. This will ensure the safety of the passengers
since the drivers will be professionals and the vehicles will
be monitored.
3. Improve punctuality. The Philippines is renowned for its
heavy traffic. However, because of this scheme, individuals
will be made aware of the timetable of the routes in advance,
allowing for faster travel and the avoidance of traffic.
4. Enhances comfort. The comfort aspects of the jeepney are
also significantly improved as a result of modernization. For
instance, the jeepneys will have greater storage capacity
and doors that are situated on the sides, making them safer
and easier to park.

ii. Disadvantages:

1. For many jeepney drivers and even operators, purchasing a

jeepney becomes a significant financial strain due to the cost
of the vehicle rising significantly as a result of modernization.
Many operators may have to discontinue operating at this
point, which opens the door to the prospect of private
corporations taking over the jeepney industry. Due to this,
commuters in the Philippines will pay more and endure
worse conditions.

b. Are you in favor of this plan?

Based on the given pros and cons about the said topic, I am in favor of
this plan. Even though many people (especially public transportation
drivers) might lose their jobs because of this plan, there are more benefits
for the community or passengers and I think that we should focus first on
the majority and on how many will benefit from this plan. I know that this
really may affect a lot of drivers and could cost them their jobs, but to look
at the long term effect of this plan, it’ll be successful and beneficial for the
majority. As for those who might lose their jobs, what the authorities could
do is provide seminars and/or training that would encourage them to be a
part of the plan.
