Teacher Notes
Purpose:
The Gallery Walk strategy is a form of cooperative learning that allows students to leave their chairs and rotate
around the room while participating in a structured discussion.

Strategy Incorporation:
This strategy is useful after reading a text in order to discuss ideas about the text. Several specific times to use
this strategy would be: after reading a story to discuss ideas, themes, and characters, before introducing a new
topic to determine student knowledge, and to generate ideas or pre-writes. The gallery walk promotes thinking
about and reflecting on texts while moving around the room. Through this strategy, students are able to meet
reading expectations, as well as listening and speaking expectations, by refining their understanding of texts and
engaging in group conversations.

Strategy Implementation:
To implement this strategy, the teacher should create or locate various stimuli, such as a quotation or short
passage, picture, or question, for students to review and respond. The chosen stimulus should reflect the ideas or
themes of the text being read and should be posted in different areas of the rooms. Students should be arranged
in groups, and each group should be provided with questions or prompts to respond to as they review the
stimulus. Each group will be assigned a stimulus, and students should be allowed sufficient time to review and
respond to the stimulus on sticky notes, in their journals, notebooks, chart paper, or pre-printed templates. After
the designated time, the teacher should allow students to move to the next stimulus and repeat the process, until
each group has reviewed and responded to all stimuli. The gallery walk can be concluded with a whole-class
discussion of student learning from the task. A specific gallery walk in my science classroom is the lesson I
present on scientists. I like to post pictures and biographical information about various people who made major
contributions to science and medicine for my gallery walk assignment.
