the origin of the coordinate system

3 Rabab Al-Farraj
Position vector in one dimension
X=2.5 m

X= -1 m
• In one dimension, position vector has only
one component , x-component
• It can be positive or negative

4 Rabab Al-Farraj
Position Graph
•Position graph or position-time graph is a graph
between the position of an object on the y-axis,
and time on the x-axis.

• The slope of the position-time graph at any

point gives the velocity of the object at the
corresponding position

Position vector in one dimension
Q1. The position vector of an object is given by:
x(t)=3t2-t+2 m find its position at t=2 s

7 Rabab Al-Farraj
Displacement and Distance
• Displacement is the difference between the
final position vector ,at the end of a motion,
and the initial position vector

• Displacement in one dimension :

• - Displacement can be ( + ve ) or (- ve )
8 Rabab Al-Farraj
Displacement and Distance

9 Rabab Al-Farraj
Q2. The position vector of an object is given by:
x(t)=3t2-t+2 m find its displacement in time
interval from t1=2 s to t2=3 s

10 Rabab Al-Farraj
Displacement and Distance
Distance: the distance I that moving object
travels is the absolute value (the magnitude)
of the displacement vector.

In one dimension l   x if the object does not reverse its(

)direction
Distance ≥ 0
SI unit of distance = m (meter)

Displacement and Distance

12 Rabab Al-Farraj
Displacement and Distance

Remember
• Displacement is vector
• Distance is scalar
• If the initial and find positions are the same .
the total displacement is 0

Δx = 0

2.3 VELOCITY VECTOR , AVERAGE VELOCITY AND
SPEED

14 Rabab Al-Farraj
What is velocity?
Velocity: the change in position in a given
time interval.
• Velocity is vector.

• Velocity can be +ve or –ve

What is the velocity of stationary object?

15 Rabab Al-Farraj
Average and instantaneous velocity

• average velocity

• instantaneous velocity

16 Rabab Al-Farraj
Position-time graph

The slope of position-time graph gives velocity

17 Rabab Al-Farraj
Instantaneous velocity
Q2. A particle moves along the x-axis according
to the equation x(t)= t2+5t+4 m, find the
velocity of the particle at t = 1 s

18 Rabab Al-Farraj
Average velocity
Q3. The position of a particle is given by
x(t)= t2+4t-2 m, what is the average velocity
during time interval from t1= 1 s to t1= 2 s

19 Rabab Al-Farraj
Speed
Speed: is the absolute value (magnitude) of
velocity.

v v

•Speed is scalar.
•Speed is always positive.

Speed can be found by dividing distance by time interval

t

2.4 ACCELERATION VECTOR

21 Rabab Al-Farraj
2.4 Acceleration Vector
Average acceleration : the velocity change per time
interval
• average acceleration
• , instantaneous acceleration
• Acceleration can be +ve or –ve

What is the acceleration of an objects that moves

with constant velocity?
22 Rabab Al-Farraj
Velocity-time graph

The slope of velocity-time graph gives acceleration

23 Rabab Al-Farraj
Acceleration

• If the velocity and acceleration are in the

same direction  the object moves faster

• If the velocity and acceleration are in

opposite direction  the object slows down

24 Rabab Al-Farraj
Exercises:
Q4. The velocity of a particle is given by
v=2t3+4t2-2 m/s find its acceleration at t=3 s

25 Rabab Al-Farraj
Exercises:
Q5. The position of a particle is given by
x=t2+2t-2 m find its acceleration at t=1s

26 Rabab Al-Farraj
Remember
• The velocity of stationary object (object at
rest) is zero
No Change in position

• The acceleration of an object that moves with

constant velocity is zero
No Change in velocity

xo : initial position
v : final velocity
vo : initial velocity

37 Rabab Al-Farraj
Free Fall
• The acceleration due to the y
gravitational force is constant
g = 9.8 m/s2

of a gravitational acceleration a = -g
