Erno Rubik

Erno Rubik is an inventor and an architect. He is best known for puzzels including the Rubik’s Cube
that was made in 1974, Rubik’s magic, and the Rubik’s snake. Erno Rubik was born in Budapest,
Hungary, on 13 July 1944, during World War II, and has lived all of his life in Hungary. His father, Erno
Rubik, was a flight engineer at the Esztergom aircraft factory, and his mother, Magdolna Szanto, was
a poet. He has stated in almost every interview that he got his inspiration from his father.

Rubik studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and Design in Budapest and architecture at the
Technical University, also in Budapest, he pursued his hobby of building geometric models. One of
these was a prototype of the Rubik’s Cube, made of 27 wooden blocks, but he didn’t know how to
solve his own invention, it took him over 1 month to solve the Rubik’s Cube, and in late 1977 he
started to sell the Rubik’s Cube. By 1980 the Rubik's Cube was sold all over the world, and over 150
million Rubik’s Cube, were sold, mostly during its three years of popularity. Approximately 50 books
were published describing how to solve the puzzle of Rubik's Cube.
