COURSE GUIDE

I. Course Title: NUMBER THEORY

II. Course Overview

A. Introduction
Number theory is one of the most important and fundamental
fields in all of mathematics. This is a field that grew out of arithmetic
and its main focus is the study of properties of whole numbers, also
known as integers.
Concepts and results from this field are important enough to
have implications for (and be used in) almost every branch of
mathematics. And not just mathematics, Number theory is also
extremely fundamental to fields like cryptography and computer
science and has applications in many other sciences, like physics and
chemistry.
This course is about the structure of the set of integers. It
covers the discussion about integers, divisibility, primes and
congruence.

B. Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students are expected to:

1. develop an understanding of the different properties of integers;

2. develop better understanding on the different principles that
govern the operations on integers;
3. develop skills in proving statements and theorems concerning
integers, divisibility, primes and congruence;
4. find solutions to an equations, and:
5. apply the concepts, principles and properties about lessons in
Number theory in solving real-life situations.

III. Course Study Guide

This Course Guide for Number Theory is:
 divided into four chapters. Each chapter starts with an
introduction and followed by lesson objectives, content of
the lessons, series of examples and activities. It ends with
activities to ensure that the concepts are learned and
applied.
 Necessary terms are defined for the purpose of
understanding the concepts.
 The students are advised to read and understand
carefully the learning outcomes set in each lesson.
 The students are required to do a reporting, video tutorial
and video presentations.
 For the students’ assessment, there will be quizzes,
assignments, seat works, board work, oral participation,
reporting, video tutorial, video presentations and 3 major
exams.

There are symbols used which the student should be

familiarized with. Many of the proofs and examples are presented
using appropriate symbols.
Some of the symbols used in the course guide are the following:
Symbols Reading
a|b a divides b
a∤b a does not divide b
a≡b a is congruent to b
a≢b a is not congruent to b
(mod m) modulo m
p prime number
