LESSON

LESSON 2: PREPARE HAND TOOLS

Proper Use of Tools

Proper Use of ESD Tools

When fixing the computer, we must remember the electrical charge that will
build up between you and the equipment, called static electricity. This static
electricity can damage electronic devices. To prevent this, we need to wear an anti-
static wrist strap. This strap serves as a conductor which avoids electrical charge
on the equipment that you are working. It canalizes the electricity through a wire
connecting the strap.
There are two ways of using the wrist strap:
1. You have to turn off your PC first or remove the
power cord from the computer. Wrap the static around
your wrist and make sure the metal bit is touching the
skin. Pull lock buckle, confirm the strap and skin have
good contact.
2. Push the anti-static wrist strap. Put into chassis or
use the alligator clamp on the grounding column of
chassis. Confirm strap good grounding cooperating with
grounding socket very well.

A conductive anti-static mat works by drawing static from component and

equipment away by transferring it safely to a grounding point:
1. The mat must put under the computer case or in the
workplace where repairing takes place.
2. To provide a grounded surface, you must clip the mat
to the case so that you can place the parts as you
remove them from the system.

Anti-static wrist strap and mat can reduce the

potential risk for ESD to damage delicate circuits or
components of a computer or other equipment.

Proper Use of Hand Tools

To have a good output in repair, proper skills must be on the top list. A
technician must know how to manipulate tools in fixing computer. This topic
covers different ways on using hand tools based on function.

Screws
Screwdrivers must be matched with the
appropriate screw. Some have slotted (-), others have
crosshead screw (+) and hex type of screw. Place the tip
of the screwdriver on the screw. Make sure that it
matches the head of screw. Turn the screwdriver
clockwise to tighten the screw and counter clockwise to
loosen the screw. Screws may get stuck in the screw
hole if you over tighten it with screwdriver. There are
some cases that it will not tighten firmly. If this
happened discard stripped screws.

Flat head screwdriver

If you are working with a slotted screw, it is necessary to use a flat head
screwdriver. Phillips head screw is not compatible with a slotted screw. Do not
attempt to use improvised tools like knife or slotted edge devices in removing screw.
If you cannot remove screw, check for faulty side or clip securing the component in
place.

Phillips head screwdriver

Crossheads screws must be loosened or tightened by a Phillips head
screwdriver. Do not use Phillip head screwdriver with a slotted type of screw.
Forcing to puncture or use as cutting device may damage the edge of the
screwdriver. Use this hand tool at your convenience for safety.

Hex driver
A hex driver can be used to loosen or tighten nuts, similarly with bolts that
have a hexagonal (six-sided) head. Hex nuts should not be over-tightened;
otherwise, the bolts’ thread will be stripped or damaged. Do not use a hex driver
that is too large for the bolt you use.

CAUTION: Some tools have magnetized edges to pick screws easily but these can
also affect electronic devices. These tools are not recommended for repairing
electronic devices due to magnetic fields which can harm data stored on magnetic
media. Check your screwdriver by touching the screw. If the tool and screw
attracted, don’t attempt to use the tool with magnet.

Part retriever, Needle-nose pliers, or tweezers

The part retriever, needle-nose pliers, and tweezers are used to retrieve and
place small parts that may be hard to reach with your fingers. Since it has a sharp
edge, this can cause damage or scratch on equipment.

CAUTION: Don’t improvised gadgets just to switch on or pry off jumpers. Avoid
using pencil, or ballpen in placing or retrieving complex material inside the
computer. This may cause a problem or damage to the equipment.

Proper Use of Cleaning Materials

Dirt and other particles can affect the performance of the computer.
Maintaining the cleanliness of these computers inside and out is a vital part to
keep having a longer life span. The build-up of dust can cause problems with the
running condition of the computer, where it acts as an insulator to trap heat and
impair the ability of heat sink and cooling fan to keep components cool, resulting to
overheat and system failure.

CAUTION: Using compressed air to clean a computer must be done with caution.
Required distance is necessary from the equipment to nozzle to avoid inhalation of
chemicals. Also, upon spraying, do not hold the can upside down because the
liquid will spray on the surface that can cause damage to the equipment. The
pattern of spraying is from the top to bottom to clean the unit thoroughly. At the
back of the case, the fan and power supply should be sprayed.
CAUTION: Turn off or remove the plug before cleaning any equipment. Electric
charges may cause static or can trigger electrically related risk upon cleaning
equipment.

Computer Cases
It is essential to clean the external chassis of the
computer. In cleaning the computer chassis/CPU, it
doesn’t need to wash the whole equipment. Wipe the
surface with a damp, lint-free cloth with a mild-cleaning
solution like liquid mixed with a drop of dishwashing
liquid. Wipe in a horizontal direction, from top to
bottom. Wash the fabric after use to remove the dirt.

LCD Screens
LCD Screens have a delicate and sensitive
component that can be easily damaged or scratch.
Solutions with ammoniated materials as well as the
harsh chemicals will damage the coating on the screen.
A lint-free cloth with a solution (for LCD purposes only)
will help to eliminate the dirt. Wipe the screen gently in
a zigzag pattern until all sides are clean. Make sure the
screen is off and unplugged to lessen the buildup of
static energy.

CRT Screens
CRT is different from LCD based on
physical appearance. CRT Monitors has a wide
appearance, so the cleaning is not only focused
on screen but also on the whole monitor. You will
need a brush to clean the top back of the monitor.
Dampen a soft clean cloth (microfiber) with
distilled water and wipe on-screen in gentle
circular motions to remove dirt area.

Dusty computers can be clean with

compressed air. This procedure can avoid the
spreading of dirt into hands and electrostatic
buildup. However, since it made of harsh
chemicals, proper ventilation is needed. Too much
inhale of compress gas may lead to suffocation
and air poisoning.
In using compress air towards the equipment, it needed short bursts so that
liquid will not pass into it. Never use the compress air upside down. Hold moving
parts of the computer like the fan on hold upon using air because it may damage
the motor from spinning.

Component Contacts
Contacts refer to small parts inside computer hardware. In cleaning
contacts, isopropyl alcohol is advisable to use due to easily evaporation of liquid
and doesn’t contain impurities, unlike rubbing alcohol, which may damage
contacts. When using lint from the cloth or cotton swab, avoid leaving any fiber or
cotton on contact. Blow any material left in it using compressed air before
returning.

Keyboard
The keyboard must be switch off or disconnect
from the computer before cleaning. A keyboard
has a special coating that makes the letter retain
and not erased. But this will remove if you apply
harsh chemicals for cleaning or abrasive
materials.

The keyboard can also be cleaned using soft cloth such as microfiber, which
can remove the dirt without harming the coating of it. You can use a handheld
vacuum cleaner to eliminate the dirt and dust inside the keyboard.

Mouse
Like the other computer components, the
mouse can also be cleaned using a glass cleaner.
Do not spray glass cleaner straightaway onto the
mouse. You can also use a soaked lint-free cloth
with soap and warm water to wipe and remove
grease or dirt at the surface of the mouse.
