This often means that you eared ABIT ABOUT ALIGNMENT: Before we get into the technique for blending between sizes, Its important to discuss pattern piece alignment. Not all pattern pieces are aligned the same. | always try to align my pattern pieces in a way that accommodates blending sizes, even though this can often result in a lot of dotted lines really close together. | prefer to think that my customers are using the layer selection option when printing s0 you only see the sizes you need to make it much clearer. ‘Some companies like to priortise the visibilty of the pattern lines, or may align differently for various other reasons and like to get the pattern to fit nicer on the pages Mutu A ALIGNED ARBITRARY ‘VS. ALIGNED In order to properly blend between sizes, the pattern pieces hhave to align with atleast two common points, This could be the top and the centre, the bottom and the side, or the side and the top. In the example above, you can clearly see on the right pphoto, the full points of the bust and how you could blend those into a different size at the waist. Pattern pieces aligned with two common points ensure that you truly are blending from one size to another and you won't get a distorted pattems shape that won't fit with other pieces. While the image on the left shows arbitrarily placed pattern pieces which are spaced out evenly, but the pieces don't share ‘any common points. If you needed to blend between sizes ist, but another in the hips or maybe you are a different size for each! Pee eer intr ate ec eas Pree ene ee eT Cet Peay corn with a pattern that has arbitrary alignment lke this, the best thing to do would be to trace the pieces off onto a new piece of tracing paper so they are aligned property HOW TO PRINT YOUR SIZE OF ALAYERED PDF PATTERN CENTERED VS, SIDE ALIGNMENT: ‘The centre of the pattern piece counts as an alignment point you can blend pattern pieces with either of these styles of ‘alignment. When pieces are aligned in the centre ~ you have to blend on both sides of the pattern piece as shown here. For patterns aligned to one side or the other, you need to blend, from just one side. ‘Te Pater Pages | 13 DO'S AND DON'TS OF PATTERN BLENDING bo + Take accurate measurements Use layered printing to print only the sizes you need when possible. Think about length! My patterns dont vary much in length because they're drafted for petites, but with other patterns, this is ‘something to consider. For instance, ifm grading from a 2in the waist to a 6in the hip on a garment, | will usually keep the lenath of the size 2 even though | am at the width of the size 6. This is because | know | am on the short side. This works the ‘other way around as well + Blend in other places too! If you know you have larger calves, blend out below the knee! Small wrists? Blend down below the elbow on a sleeve, DON'T + Forget about little pieces like pockels, facings, ete + Blend too quickly as your blend lines should be fluid, not angular. When blending from the bust to the waist consider doing 2 full bust adjustment instead if the size difference is more than one or two sizes + Blend unaligned pattem pieces (see photo) HOW DOIGO ABOUT IT? This is the easy part! Simply use a ruler and a pencil to connect the lines from point 1 (.e. bust/waist/hip) to point 2. Your blend line might be short or tong, curved or straight depending on the garment you are working with. In some cases, you may need to lay two pattern pieces on top of one another and blend as one like with patterns with colour blocking seams or slash packets.
