EDMA 2207 Teaching Mathematics at the Primary Level

COURSE ASSIGNMENT 2: Exploration of a Topic in Primary Mathematics

Oral Presentation 20% of Course Grade


Written Paper 10% of Course Grade

The content strands commonly taught in primary mathematics are listed below.

Number Sense
Algebraic Thinking
Geometry
Measurement
Data Handling

A. ORAL PRESENTATION (20 % of Course Grade)


For the strand you have selected, prepare a presentation (Max. of 8 minutes) that includes
following:

1. An explanation of the contribution the strand makes to the ECE/primary students'


mathematical knowledge and skills.

2. An indication of aspects of the strand that should be emphasised at the ECE/primary level
and why.

3. For the identified area within the strand,

a. an explanation of how you would introduce it to an ECE/primary grade level of your


choice.

b. An explanation of how technology could be integrated into the teaching and learning of
the selected area.
4. A problem that would allow the students in the grade you selected to draw on mathematical
knowledge of the area (not a routine problem) to find a solution.

B. ASSOCIATED WRITTEN PAPER (10% of Course Grade)


Compile the information that you gathered for your presentation in a paper of no more than
1000 words. The slides for the presentation should also be submitted with the paper. The
sources from which you gathered information for the presentation and the paper must be cited
and compiled in a list of references at the end of the presentation and of the paper (Reference list
should not be included in the word count for the paper).

GUIDELINES

1. Wherever appropriate, cite literature in your assignment. As is the policy in the School of
Education, all in-text citations and reference lists should conform to the APA (7th ed.)
format. Please review the University’s policy on plagiarism
(http://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/mainlibrary/docs/regulations-for-plagarism.aspx).

2. Your presentation should NOT exceed 8 minutes. There will be a penalty for this.

3. You written paper should NOT exceed 1000 words.

4. Your document should be formatted as follows:


- Submitted on 8.5” by 11” paper, with text on ONE side of the sheets.

- A 1-inch margin all around.

- Line spacing - 1½, with a blank line between paragraphs.

- Font – Times New Roman; font size – 12.

5. Your document should have a cover page with information such as course code and name,
students ID numbers in group, and an inside cover page that outlines the nature of the
assignment.

6. Your slides, in handout format with 3 slides per page, should be attached to the paper.
Your assignment should be uploaded to the course site as follows:
