Introduction

1. Introduction
As with any advanced sonar system being used in harsh offshore environments failures
can sometimes occur. For the GeoSwath Plus system, if any one of the phase signals are
not decoded by the GS4 software it results in data of reduced quality.
To simplify the process of fault finding we have GeoRGE, the GeoSwath Plus Response
Gathering and Evaluation test kit. GeoRGE provides a method for validating that the
phase signals are correctly received and decoded by the GS4 acquisition software.
Using the Phase Check utility provided with GeoRGE you can also verify that the sonar
electronics are correctly tuned.

Q. How does this differ from the test signal in GS4?

The GS4 test signal only verifies the phase path internally through the sonar electronics.
Any other faults with cabling either inside the Deck Unit or externally (e.g. within the
transducer cables) are not detected.
Using GeoRGE the full path of the receive signals is checked, starting from the transducer
cable connector up through the deck unit’s internal wiring and sonar receive circuitry.

Q. What products can it test?

The test kit can be used to test:
 the GeoSwath Plus Deck Unit
 the GeoSwath Compact
 the GeoSwath Plus ROV
 single head and standard transducer cables

Q. Is there anything GeoRGE does not check?

The functionality of the following are not tested:
 the transducers
 the path of the transmit signals
 the MRU/MiniSVS sensor cable
 GeoSwath AUV systems
Note The transmit signals can however be checked by listening to the transducers
and changing the transmit power.

Q. If I leave transmit on whilst testing will anything be damaged?

The transmit lines are not connected through to the hand held generator so there is no
chance of damaging the test equipment.

3. The HPG1 Handheld Pocket Generator

The hand held function generator is used to generate a test signal. The ‘ON/OFF’ switch
is located on top of the unit.

Figure 2: ON/OFF switch location

Controls
The function generator can be configured using the four buttons on the front (see Figure 3).
For further details please refer to the HPG1 user manual.

3.1. Function Generator Configuration

• Connect the 20dB attenuator to the HPG1 hand held function generator.

Figure 4: Attaching the attenuator

• Turn on the function generator and set the outputs as shown in Figure 5. Make sure
the frequency matches that of the GeoSwath acquisition system.

Figure 5: Function generator settings

Note If the function generator does not turn on or if the display flickers the device
needs to be charged using the supplied USB cable.

System Tests

4. System Tests
Only tests ‘A’ and ‘B’ detailed in this document need to be performed to determine if a
fault is present. In each case the function generator is used to inject a test signal through
the GeoSwath system:
- Test ‘A’: Tests the GeoSwath acquisition system (Deck Unit, GeoSwath Compact or
ROV).
- Test ‘B’: Tests the transducer cables.
- Test ‘C’: An optional test to pinpoint which phase pair(s) may be faulty.
If the GeoSwath system passes test ‘A’ this provides a reference against which to check the
transducer cables.

Suggested Actions
Test ‘A’ failure: If no test signal is seen in the Side Scan display then check if the DIO
board number is correct. If you own a GeoSwath Deck Unit and have
a spare sonar interface assembly then you can fit this and repeat ‘Test
A’. Otherwise contact Kongsberg GeoAcoustics.
Test ‘B’ failure: Replace the suspect cable with another if you have one. Alternatively
contact Kongsberg GeoAcoustics and supply us with the cable model
and serial numbers.

System Tests

Additional Checks
For a phase differencing bathymetric sonar it is important the each phase within the sonar
electronics is tuned accurately. Using the provided Phase Check utility this can be
periodically checked to ensure optimum system performance (see 8. Additional Checks:
Phase Tuning).

4.1. Testing Notes

For tests A and B the correct result in the depth display is a single line.

Figure 6: Test signal on port

There are 8 receive signal lines that run through both the transducer cables and GeoSwath
acquisition system. If any one of these signals is faulty the expected test result will differ
from above. Some faults appear more obvious than others (see Table 1).

Recommendations
To make the subtle faults stand out more try increasing the pixel size in the GS4 display
options.

Side Scan Analogue Response

The test signal response in the Side Scan Analogue display may vary depending on the
frequency of the system under test. See examples for each frequency below.

Figure 10: 125 kHz

Figure 11: 250 kHz

Figure 12: 500 kHz

Note If no Side Scan response is seen the DIO board number may be set
incorrectly in Instacal. See the GeoSwath Plus operation manual for details
on how change the board number.

Test ‘A’: Deck Unit, GeoSwath Compact or ROV

Note Set the zoom level within the Depth display so that you can see the entire
test signal. In the Depth display there should be only one green line. If
multiple lines are present or if no Side Scan signal is seen in the Analogue
display then the unit has failed the test. The Waterfall displays only show
data when no errors messages are on display.

Test ‘C’: Which phase pairs are faulty?

7. Test ‘C’: Which phase pairs are faulty?

This optional test uses the Phase Check utility in conjunction with the handheld function
generator to determine which phase pair(s) may be faulty.

Requirements
Software shortcuts to the Phase Check utility are provided on the supplied USB flash
drive.

Note The shortcuts must be copied to the computer on which the sonar
electronics is installed. For GeoSwath Compact and ROV systems please
use an UltraVNC connection when performing these checks.

• For GeoSwath Deck Unit systems:

 copy the ‘GS4 Phase Check’ software shortcut to the desktop. Start ‘GS4 Phase
Check’ by double clicking on the desktop shortcut.
• For GeoSwath Compact and ROV systems:
 copy the ‘GS4Remote Phase Check’ software shortcut to the desktop of the
GeoSwath Compact/ROV bottle. Start ‘GS4Remote Phase Check’ by double
clicking on the desktop shortcut.

7.1. Test Procedure

1. Connect the handheld function generator to the suspected faulty cable (or input
channel on the GeoSwath system) using the appropriate test lead (via the 20db
attenuator).
2. Turn on the handheld function generator and set the outputs as shown in Figure 24.
Make sure the frequency matches that of the GeoSwath system.

3. From the ‘Control’ menu enable only the channel which is suspect e.g. ‘Port’ (see
example in Figure 25). De-select ‘Test Signal’ and ‘Phase Difference’. Start
acquisition and verify that a moving sawtooth signal is present for each phase.

• Each phase originates from a pair of signals (e.g. phase A+, A-, B+, B- etc.). If any
phase signal pair is missing noise will be seen instead of the sawtooth waveform.
Similarly if just one signal from a phase pair is faulty, noise will be evident but to a
lesser degree (see examples in Figure 27).

• Close the Phase Check utility once the checks are complete.
Note The path of the faulty phase signals can be traced by looking at the

manual or by contacting Kongsberg GeoAcoustics support.

Additional Checks: Phase Tuning

8. Additional Checks: Phase Tuning

A software generated test signal can be used to check the tuning of the 4 phases within the
sonar electronics module. The difference between each phase (A, B, C and D) should be 0
for a tuned system.

Requirements
The Phase Check utility is required to perform this test. Ensure the shortcut has been
copied to the desktop on the GeoSwath system (see 7. Test ‘C’: Which phase pairs are faulty?)
Note For this check the HPG1 handheld function generator and test cables are
not required.

8.1. Test Procedure

1. Double click on the ‘Phase Check’ shortcut. From the ‘Control’ menu enable ‘Phase
Difference’. Ensure the Test Signal is enabled, then click ‘Start’.

2. Verify that each phase difference value is 0 as shown in Figure 28.
