EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This assignment focusses on the organization chosen Vodafone Fiji which has come across some
changes over the past few years. This this research will discuss on the change process, phases of
change, outcomes of the changes that took place, the leadership role used in the change process
as well as the critique analysis of the overall change occurrence. Vodafone Fiji is the recognized
organization that operates with many outlets which sells the advance technologies and provide
many services as well such as m-paisa and e-ticketing. There are both internal and external
change took place, internal change will look on the changes that happened within the
management whereas external change will focus on to the technologies such as devices growth
of the new services. There were other changes as well which were focused such as upgrading of
the networks, (CSR) corporate social responsibility and involvement with other companies as
well. Planned change and action research model were being used in the change process. The
company wants to come with an outcome which will help the people of Fiji and the public
should benefit the upgraded networks. The company wants to come up with a great usage of
technology which will mostly looked into the people of rural areas so that they can have a proper
usage of networks. There have been changes seen in the services compared to the past years such
as m-paisa system where bills can be made from this system and e-ticketing system. CSR system
has been used where people of Fiji can benefit and have a good health condition. Vodafone Fiji
has changed their applications where people can be monitored through websites such as face
book in their hard times. The partnership with the other organizations has taken place some
changes in the management where more ideas will be carried out which will benefit Vodafone
Fiji. The information gathered doing this research project was done through the questionnaires
and online articles, thus this assignment will conclude with the overall change process of
Vodafone Fiji.

INTRODUCTION
Vodafone Fiji was established in year 1993 locally owned organization by hundred percent.
Amalgamated telecommunications Holdings owned Vodafone Fiji by the fifty-one percent and
National Provident fund by forty-nine percent. From year 1993 till now Vodafone Fiji is growing
day by day and taking advancement of technology to a greater level for people of Fiji. The
company is making ideas and improvements on products to provide a best class product for the
public. Back before there was not many outlets as it is now, the outlets Vodafone Fiji has opened
in Fiji are in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, Labasa, Nausori, Sigatoka and Tavua. There is a total of
760,000 subscribers in country of Fiji [ CITATION Vod19 \l 3081 ].

Moving on, Vodafone Fiji has its network towers which are located at Vunivere, Bauxite, Ono
and Beqa which gives a high speed of network which will benefit the people of those location. In
year 2018 Vodafone started with the new task and in 2019 the people of Dawasamu, Lomivuna,
Visama, Vina, Balevuto, Varara, Vesisary, Nausori highlands, Nawai, and islands like Moturiki,
Batiki and Gau also benefited from the Vodafone’s network and it was one of the major asset for
the Vodafone Fiji.

Furthermore, Vodafone Fiji has its latest network which is 4G+ with 1800 MHz frequency which
will download the links at a quicker speed which is used by the 96% of people in Fiji. The
responsibility of Vodafone Fiji is to arrange its customers a greater network where people will be
connected through the technologies of Vodafone which will become easy for the people to live.
There are disadvantage side as well which is finance to cater which is required for the online
shopping with quality product. Vodafone Fiji has already lodge their upgrade network to 5G+
which will be worked on the specific phones such as which are S20 ultra and Note 20 ultra,
almost 50% of the people of Fiji will benefit best speed mobile data and connection.

Moreover, this research project is based on the change process that has carried out from past
years in the organization Vodafone Fiji. Changes such as m-paisa, new upgraded devices, e-
ticketing, applications, websites and purchasing through online services.

METHODLOGY

The following primary and secondary methods were being used to collect the information for this
research project:
Primary Research
Mr. Vinod Kumar were being interviewed who is the chief executive officer of Vodafone Fiji,
and some information was being gathered from manager of Vodafone Fiji Mr. Avichal Prasad.
The reason for interviewing these people because they knew the changes taken place in the
organization over past years. Questionnaires were being prepared and were given as well which
were easy to access in the write up. The interview helped in collecting the information and the
reasons for the change process.

Secondary Research

The information was gathered through internet which were used to compile the information
about the Vodafone Fiji and there change process. Information on Vodafone Fiji and their change
process was also found on the website of Vodafone Fiji which helped in compiling the
assignment.

FINDINGS
Change Processes in Vodafone Fiji Limited
The new technologies in the society are bringing a lot of changes where organizations are unable
to control the changes. Changes takes place in all the businesses and the business needs to adapt
the change happening for the growth of the business and more ways of making the profit. In year
1993 the company started under the name of Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited which
was later recognized as Vodafone Fiji Limited. It’s almost over 25years giving the service to the
people of Fiji through mobile services where communication can take place anywhere around the
world through mobile. The aim of the company is still look into the best service for its people for
better network service and better data service. The company is still improving its network on its
internet service where people can use anytime and at any place.

Moving on, since Vodafone Fiji started its business they are growing its business day by day into
more innovative ways. The company has taken into another level of prosperity which are m-paisa
service where people to make payments with one click on their mobile phones and e-ticketing
service also took place where people can travel in the bus just through tapping the card. M-paisa
system started on 16th of June, 2010 where Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama of Fiji island
introduced its service. It helps people in easier ways where money can be received and
transferred at any time just certain conditions is required [ CITATION Set10 \l 1033 ].

In year 2019 Vodafone Fiji launched its 5G network across the world in the month of July, so
people can benefit with the greater network service. Together with 4G and 5G service both is
covering both Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Before the 5G network, 4G network was also
providing the greater mobile internet service with selected mobile phones. The best part about
Vodafone is the best internet provider where if people are not connected with 4G network it
automatically changes to 3G network [ CITATION Ran13 \l 1033 ]. In year 2016 the new
Vodafone app was launched on the Play Store by the name of “My Vodafone App” which include
some features such as data balance, recharge, data plans and many more. This service was
provided so people can benefit growth of smartphones and easy for them to access. There are no
charges made if people has to download the app from the Play Store.

Connection of New Technologies

Vodafone Fiji is a worldwide company and has been seen a fast change in the technologies such
as mobile phones which are needed by the clients and has shown what the future products and
brand the company will bring. The people are trying to clarify the difference between the 5G and
4G network and trying to understand the difference and getting attracted to the 5G network
service. Every year Vodafone is bringing the new S series and other more mobile series where
70% is computerized with NFC innovation where people are getting attracted day by day
towards the company.

Implementing of New Services (m-paisa)

M-paisa service has taken place where people can receive and send cash within seconds form the
mobile number. The m-paisa service is totally free where the cash can be secured and just takes a
moment anywhere in Fiji and anyone can be enrolled in the service just with the mobile number
on Prepay or Post-pay or Inkk. Enrolment. This is the easier for the customers of Vodafone Fiji to
do the payments, recharge top ups and many more service.

Implementing of New Services (e-ticketing)

The e-ticketing is also one of the easier way and people can benefit as well. After the e-ticketing
was been launched people don’t have to carry cash for the bus fare due to the theft happening
around us, or if people are being robbed at least they will have the e-ticketing card to enter in the
bus. The made the peoples life easier.

Changes in Devices (Automatically or manually connecting to a network)

There is 5G network for the selected device but the 4G network are being used mostly to all the
devices. 4G network should get connected where its reachable. If the mobile is not able to get
connected to 4G network the device will automatically get connected to 3G network. Both the
4G and 3G network are accessible to the customers, where customers can choose the network
which is much more convenient to specific locations. If there is being issues and the phones are

not able to make calls, the customers can change the network straight away instead of making a
way to Vodafone outlet.

Internal change

Change in Management Process

There are changes in the process of the management procedure, the adaption of the change is
required to have a better business result. The change in the administrator’s outlet will affect the
public which may result some losses as well. Changes in the frameworks, methods, structure will
have to listen to the public side as well.

Outcomes
Product awareness

The aim Vodafone Fiji would like to rich is to provide best communication power to its
customers. This means to make peoples life stress-free through the advanced technologies and
mobile phones. The result Vodafone wants for its people is to making calls and answering
instantly without any network issues. The mobile phones can be used anywhere around the world
and people can also get connected to each other through internet by using of viber and Facebook.
There was articles in the television and newspaper where people can get the information about
the Vodafone Fiji’s procedures.

Network upgrades

There was a network upgraded in all the areas around Fiji and towers was upgraded which has
now come up to 5G network. The result was to guarantee the public in rural areas can get data
connection and take note that public takes the advantage of Vodafone Fiji’s network upgrades
with high speed data connectivity. Vodafone has come up too many data bundles where
customers has many choices to choose from and promotions are also provided by the company.

Changes in services

In year 2010 the m-paisa system was being launched where people can send money, withdraw
cash, make payments, buy recharge and also top up e-ticketing. M-paisa service was so profitable
that help the people of cyclone Winston with the amount of $130million [ CITATION ATH17 \l
3081 ]. Energy Fiji Limited is also partnership with Vodafone Fiji where public can make bill
payments, housing authority, and other bills through m-paisa. Vodafone came up with this
innovative way that makes life of the public easier where they can just sit home and make
payments. The e-ticketing has also made life easier where people don’t have to carry much cash
while travelling in the bus.

Partnership with various organizations

Vodafone partnered with other companies where public can benefit. Spinal Injury Association
and Fiji National Council of People partnered with Vodafone Fiji where Physio Net of UK

carried $2.7miilion worth of mobile devices for Vodafone Fiji [ CITATION ATH15 \l 3081 ].
Vodafone contributed towards funding in children’s heart surgeries, spinal injury cases and many
more connectivity with children’s treatment at Shriners hospital in Hawaii and India. Energy Fiji
Limited, Sky Pacific and Water authority partnered with Vodafone Fiji in connection of payments
through m-paisa. This will help Vodafone to maintain a good relationship for future benefits.

Device upgrades: new generations or series of phones/brands

Vodafone introduce new series of phones every year. Back in years’ people were using the button
phones that has now changed into touch screen phones. There is been upgrade to the wireless
internet as well, while before we had the wired internet. The outcome is to make the public and
get enough educated with the advanced technologies. Before people used to buy cameras for any
events comparing now people can capture photos in their mobile phones. Every year Vodafone
comes with different series and with different features where people will get attracted towards
the phones.

Leadership used in the change Process

Leadership plays a vital in the organization. A leader need to adapt and deal with the changes
happening in the organization. A good leader adapts and implement new strategies in more
innovative ways to work with the changes. Leaders are the role model in the organization.

Leader of Vodafone Fiji is a role model in the organization and has set up examples for the
employees for them to follow.
The leader in the Vodafone Fiji is communicating with its staffs at all the levels. Communication
is the important part in Vodafone Fiji where employees communicate with its leader if there
any issue arise, if there are not proper communication stuffs will get more problematic.
Vodafone allows its employees to communicate with the senior leaders regarding work issue
which will bring a better understanding in the work environment.
Emails are being used by the leader of Vodafone Fiji to update anything regarding work which is
much easier way to let the employees know regarding any plans, targets or goals.
Regular meetings in the organization keep leader connection with its employees. It is a good
opportunity for employee to share any issue regarding work and give ideas regarding work.
There is being eight meetings held in Vodafone Fiji on a yearly basis which includes all the
staffs of the organization. Goal setting are being managed by the leaders in planning of new
innovative ideas and goals are to be reached as planned. This will help the employees to follow
the footsteps and manage in achieving their goals.
Vodafone Fiji giving their employees the opportunities to study at the University of the South
Pacific during working hours and help them assisting in their fees payments.

CONCLUSION

Vodafone Fiji are innovating their products in a way that they manage to grow their products
each and every year. This company comes up with more series of mobile phones with more
unique features that enhance customers to buy. The finding is being collected from Vodafone Fiji
has made many changes that has been discussed above with both externally and internally which
has benefited the public and the organization as well. The company has both the advantages and
disadvantages where changes plays important role in the business. Till now Vodafone is still
working on to fulfill the customers’ needs and trying to meet their satisfaction. Vodafone wants
to keep its customers with the latest technologies and provide quality products and services.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Vodafone Fiji has come up with many changes in the past years and trying to keep their
customers happy in many ways such as latest technology of smart phones, data connectivity and
proper networks. The other recommendations Vodafone should look after are:

 There is always network issue during natural disasters therefore Vodafone Fiji should look after
that important time because those are the important time people check-up in their families.

 Instead of having 8 meeting in a year the company should have more meetings arranged so that
employees can give feedbacks and companies can work on the issues on a monthly basis.

 Sometimes there are bad data connection during windy weather therefore, company should take
into consideration because public are paying for those data.

 Having a proper customer services where employees should build a good relationship with its
customers.
