1. HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE (ETHIOPIAN)
2. Dorze village, which is about 35 Kms from Arbaminch, is situated high up in the misty Guge Mountains. Location of Dorze
3. The Dorze people are well known in making use of everything they grew with no waste. The people are farmers and they prevent a soil erosion by ingenious
terracing of the mountainous region. Around their huts the Dorze people have their own little garden with vegetables, spices , but also tobacco and enset
4. The people are famous for their beehive or elephant shaped Huts. The reason that they resemble to design their house with elephant shape is because it once
lived around their habitation.
5. Their House is constructed with vertical hard wood poles and woven. They are using bamboos as a frame structure for the huts and traditionally, they cut the
bamboo at moonlight.
6. For insulation purpose, they cover the roof with Thatch and bamboo stems. They Dorze hut has one front door and three windows up near the roof.
7. The towering structure can go as high as 12 meters and last from 60-80 years. Their hut is subdivided into; Fireplace Cattle Section Bedroom Brewery Section
8. Due to a termite attack of the foundation of the hut… they carefully cut o the rotten part, they li and relocate the hut someplace else. NB. That is why they
build their hut so high. The older the hut the shorter it gets. The older house will be for newly weds or kitchen.
9. Location of Tigray Tigray is located in the Northern part of Ethiopia.
10. The Region is a rocky mountainous land and has a historical background of using their resource to reflect their culture. They also have a rock hewn churches
carved out from a rocky mountain.
11. The Tigray houses are built from amazing stone masonry. It usually have a rectangular shape but sometimes rounded.
12. The roofs are usually flat and wood covered with mortar with an overhanging eaves to protect the wall from rain water. However, sometimes it has a cone
shaped when the building is rounded. On the outside of their houses they build beautifully stone steps leading to the roof where roof is used for many purpose.
Or I some cases the houses could double story and the upper floor would be used as bedroom, living room or guest house.
13. The interior wall is painted with white or o white colour made from crashed local limestone, cow dung and hey. The Ceiling is curved wood arranged in an
artistic geometric patterns usually crosses
14. A rich family could have three free standing building and bound their territory with stone fence. They use Timber as a Lintel at openings. They also insert
woods a structural elements and usually it Jets out from the surface as a decoration. Itʼs called “Monkey Head”
15. Sometimes they also could have an external space used as a verandah covered with wooden pergola. Inside the kitchen, they construct a fire place used for
cooking.
