SUBJECT: CHEM01L DATE SUBMITTED: 10/1/22

COURSE: BS MxE

EXPERIMENT NO. 1

TITLE: Reaction of metals with water

VIDEO NO. 1

TITLE: Relative Reactivity of Metals

VIDEO NO. 2

I. OBJECTIVE:
VIDEO NO.1: reaction of metals with water activity

VIDEO NO. 2: Relative Reactivity of Metals

II. MATERIALS/CHEMICALS:
VIDEO NO.1: aluminium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, potassium, sodium, beaker

VIDEO NO. 2: iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, copper sulphate,, zinc sulphate, aluminium
sulphate and silver nitrate. Watch glass, beaker

III. PROCEDURE:
VIDEO NO.1:
● put some pieces of the sample separately in beakers half filled with cold water and
determine which metals react with cold water. The result is magnesium reacted with
cold water.
● Did any metal catch fire in water? The result is metals like sodium react vigorously with
water and catch fire.
● Does any metal start floating after some time? Answer calcium starts floating after some
time observation the result is calcium starts floating after some time.
● Observation the result is metals like aluminium iron and zinc do not react either with
cold or hot water but they react with steam.
● metals selected aciem and sodium react vigorously with cold water
● put the metals that did not react with cold water in beakers half filled with hot water
and the result is reactivity decreases in the order magnesium is most reactive it is more
reactive than aluminum which is more reactive than iron which is more reactive than
lead which is more reactive than copper ( Mg > Al > Fe > Pb > Cu )

VIDEO NO. 2:
● copper sulphate, zinc sulphate and aluminium sulphate, take small pieces of iron and put
them into the beakers containing copper sulphate, zinc sulphate and aluminium sulphate
solutions. Leave the beakers undisturbed for one day.
● After a day, the colour of copper sulphate solution turns from blue to light green and red
brown particles of copper settle at the bottom of the beaker. This indicates that iron is
more reactive than copper, as Fe2+ ions displace Cu2+ ions from copper sulphate
solution. In the other two cases.
● silver nitrate, aluminium sulphate and zinc sulphate, add pieces of copper into the silver
nitrate, aluminium sulphate and zinc sulphate solutions and leave it.
● zinc in the solutions of copper sulphate, aluminium sulphate and silver nitrate, take small
pieces of zinc and add them in the beakers containing these salt solutions and leave it.
● magnesium in the solutions of copper sulphate, silver nitrate and zinc sulphate, add
small pieces of magnesium into the beakers containing these solutions and leave them
undisturbed for one day.

IV. OBSERVATIONS & RESULTS:

VIDEO NO.1: Reaction of Iron with water is too slow to come But when steam is passed over
aluminium metal, aluminium oxide and hydrogen gas are produced. And Zinc metal produces
zinc oxide and hydrogen gas when steam is passed over it. Zinc does not react with cold
water.

VIDEO NO. 2:

reactivity of iron is the colour of copper sulphate solution turns from blue to light green and
red brown particles of copper settle at the bottom of the beaker.

reactivity of copper in solutions is the colourless silver nitrate solution changes to blue
coloured copper nitrate solution and silver particles settle down at the bottom of the beaker.

reactivity of zinc is red-brown particles of copper settle down at the bottom of the copper
sulphate solution.

reactivity of magnesium is Zinc and silver particles settle down at the bottom of beaker
containing the respective solutions.
V. CONCLUSION

VIDEO.1: the iron react with cold water is slow and zinc is does not react with cold water

VIDEO NO. 2:
● This indicates that iron is less reactive than the other two metals: aluminium and zinc, so it
cannot displace these metals from their salt solutions.

● since copper is less reactive than aluminium and zinc, there are no changes observed in their salt
solutions.
● This indicates that zinc is more reactive than copper and it displaces copper from copper
sulphate solution to form zinc sulphate.

● This indicates that magnesium is more reactive than copper, zinc and silver
