AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD (1910-1945) - English was introduced to

mainstream schools throughout the country. This meant some American literary
influences had an impact on Philippine literature, including the introduction of free verse
poetry. Short storytelling also became popular, and as romantic movie traditions
intersected with Philippine culture, so did romantic novels. Filipino writers imitated
English and American models of literature

• The Period of Re-Orientation (1889-1910)

- English as a literary vehicle came with the American occupation on August


13, 1898, and as they say, a choice bestowed on us by history. By 1900,
English came to be used as a medium of instruction in public schools.

• The Period of Imitation (1910-1925)

- 1919: the UP College Folio published the literary compositions of the first
Filipino writers in English. They were the pioneers in short story writing.

- 1920: the Philippine Herald the first Filipino daily in English was founded

- 1924: the Philippine Review, the Independent Rising Philippines, and the
Philippine Education Magazine.

• The Period of Self-Discovery (1925-1941)

- 1927: the Bureau of Education published Philippine Prose and Poetry which
was adopted as a textbook

The Press published the first anthology of Philippine short stories written in
English
