Job Descriptions

JOB TITLE Optometrist DEPARTMENT Ophthalmology


REPORTS TO Head of Department GRADE

Job Purpose
The Optometrist provides general optometry care to all patients who visit
ophthalmology OPD.
Key Responsibilities:
I. Take care of the patient’s immediate optometric needs In Ophthalmology OPD.
II. Undertake medical evaluation, including history and physical examination.
III. Perform Eye Refraction tests necessary for evaluation of the patient‘s visual
acuity.
IV. Obtains topographical measurements of the eye to include corneal diameter and
curvature, assists the physicians to fit patients with contact lenses and evaluating
lens fit with a bio-microscope, instructs patients on the proper techniques used in
caring for, inserting and wearing contact lenses.
V. Perform diagnostic procedures like Biometry, Fundoscopy, Tonometry, and
fundoscopy.
VI. Review the diagnostic reports as OCT performs from outside.
VII. Generally, examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a
slit lamp and note variations from normal.
VIII. Provides educational information about the prevention of eye diseases, injury
prevention and ways to promote eye health.
IX. Calibrates/gets calibrated and maintains all instruments used e.g. bio-
microscopes, lensometer, tangent screen, slit lamp, and tonometer.
X. Participates in the development of patient care plans.
XI. Pre-operative Assessment and preparation of the patients.
XII. Post-Operative Assessment and instructions to each patient.
XIII. Initiate admission and discharge process for daycare ophthalmology procedures.
XIV. Must help patients to feel comfortable before, during, and after eye examinarion
and procedure
XV. Maintains a stock register of equipment, instruments, etc.
XVI. Performs any other professional duty assigned by the in charge.

Working conditions include work in ophthalmology OPD.

Qualification/ Experience:
Basic Qualification: FSC
Professional Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry
Experience: Two years relevant work experience
